The trouble with an ethno-language (such as Maori) that is only spoken by a specific ethnicity is the resentment that group will have if the majority of the population ever adopt that language.

My old man hailed from Napier but moved up to the East Coast after he was married in 1947. Although Pakeha he spoke fluent Maori but never advertised the fact.
