Until they know and accept the cause, this is not going to change.

I have said before and repeat that the issue for employers and their staff is wage parity. No person in their 30s+ with kids wants to be standing next to a 16-year-old and being paid almost the same wages.

Before the clown from the tractor starts, let’s just make the point that there is a threshold at which point it’s more profitable to go offshore.
That threshold is determined by a number of things, the most important of which is the competition in the marketplace.
If you are making something similar to what can be imported for way less money, then the answer is offshore, you go.
Wages are a major factor in most businesses. So unless they are in line, then we lose.

Regulations and things like cost of capital and depreciation etc, are other factors.

Now you may argue, for example, that in my case we have very little competition, but that’s not true. Imported, ready-made made cheap products are one area where that comes from.

Years ago we made a comparison between breakfast and lunch foods. Bread was a big staple back then. Indeed, it was the largest category in the food chain. The size of that category has shrunk because of the other products in the market, and that despite very real rationalisation of the production (at the cost of innovation, I might add.)

The unions and their socialist, communist mates removed youth rates.
Now, with the best will in the world, no 16-17-18-year-old kid has the nous needed to do most jobs. They need training. (Indeed, some of their parents are in that state as well).

We have listened to several years of whining about not enough people to do trained jobs. Well, that’s never been a surprise to me. No one wanted to train even in good times because it simply cost too much without any recognition of the cost of doing that. They decided to add a training wage, but to be honest, that was unsuccessful for a lot of reasons.
Employers want to know it’s worth the effort to take a child and train them to become a useful adult, something that many of their parents never did. Worse, of course, was that they simply diverted money and attention to failing polytechs and hooked those who went there to train with student loans. (you all know about).

Youth rates do not have to be a penalising issue, but need to be done in such a way that they recognise a trainees worth as they get trained.
The old apprenticeship system is a good guide.

Set out a timetable for training
Set out the training to be undergone and what the milestones for that training are.
Set out a wage reward that recognises the above.
Allow no bad practices, as the trainee must be subject to the normal employment laws, plus protection from those who just want someone cheap for a few months. That, of course, should be written into their employment agreement.

These rules can be mandated in law.

The old youth rates IIRC started at 60% of adult rates. At 16, that would mean you don’t have money to waste on fast cars and mad friends, so the community would be better off, along with the fact that many, after a day’s real work, would be just too tired to play merry hell. Many would remain at home as well.

Depression and suicides would go down as these kids would feel valued. Every kid, both girls and boys, needs a mentor. Going to work often provides that, especially for boys.

If every employer were able to add an extra young person to their staff because they could afford to, we would not have an unemployment problem at all.
It’s really that simple to solve.

I, for one, would take on 2.
What about you?

Invest in your future, or you won’t have one. Staff is part of that investment.

Anyone can jump out of a plane with a parachute, BUT do they know how to do it safely?
If they do, how did they get that knowledge?

From Saggy’s link:

…..”“And to move for seasonal work – there’s not that many jobs, and it’s not permanent. So we’re just meant to spend all that time, energy and money moving to an area, but for what?””…..

In a sane country the answer would be sustaining life with food & shelter.

Young people having trouble finding work is not a new phenomenon. It took me a while to get any kind of job after graduation, and several years to get into my chosen field.

But some of what NN says is just cunty and reinforces why I don’t like him:

‘“Those that can’t find a job where they are living should “go where the jobs are”, the Prime Minister said this week.’

Um. Maybe people have like, friends, family and community where they live?

Then he makes it worse:

“He singled out regions ripe with horticulture – like Hawke’s Bay and Northland – as places to look to.”

Yeah, because it’s totally worth uprooting your life to work in an orchard or vineyard. Does NN not even consider that that’s SEASONAL work? What are they supposed to do for the rest of the time?

And I’m not suggesting that because someone has a degree they’re above certain kinds of work, but does NN not consider that it’s a fucking waste of taxpayer resources to pay 75% of the cost of someone to obtain a BSc, say, then have them picking fruit?

No thanks. Hawkes Bay doesn’t need Christian for orchard work. He looks like he’d need a rest if he passed an apple from his left hand to his right. And we’re well stocked with unemployables.

Took a break from his degree course to look for work – unsuccessfully for 5 years.

I don’t think anyone should have to uproot their life for seasonal work. Not permanently, anyway. That’s my main point. If you disagree, that’s fine. It’s not about having a degree, and you know that.

Isn’t it important not to bludge on society or your parents if at all possible? Working is not supposed to be easy, it also promotes a work ethic, grit, and personal independence. In past times people did whatever job would give them any income until something better came up.

Striving for an improved, independent life from your own hard work seems to have become optional.

Well it’s bigger waste to pay 75% of the cost of someone to obtain a BSc and then have them sitting on the dole. Any work is experience, even if it’s just the discipline of getting out of bed, getting to work, being able to follow instructions, work in a team etc. And I have picked fruit!

I would argue that we make it too hard for employers to hire them.
If you think about it that way the you can see the solutions. After all, who pays the wages and who does the state rob to pay the unemployment benefit? It’s a viscous socialist roundabout.

Some seasonal accommodation can be easier to find than you think. Many orchards have dorms and caravans which are ideal for the harvest season. Live cheap while saving earnings.
Not suitable for families of course, or science graduates that still need mummy’s help to get their undies on the right way round.

By simple logic much of that debt must contra out. Debt is only a problem if it’s borrowed for consumption, then it is eventually the problem of the lender when the borrower defaults. At this point the debt disappears with the lender out of pocket unless they have security over an asset.

If it is sovereign debt then the nation itself would be collateral.

nasska

You’re right. It seems that the collateral is the ability of the nation’s government to tax its citizens. No international court can force a country to pay up & generally action is limited to a borrower’s overseas assets.

i was going to comment on the 337trillion debt the other week.

if the debt can get created from nothing then it should be able to be cancelled with no great deal aswell.

the debt of many countries is now unsustainable, its a giant fucking ponzi and it all shouldve collapsed decades ago.
all the great empires that collapsed throughout the ages was mainly due to devalued currencies and loss of faith in the system. imo thats why theres been a huge surge in precious metals and crypto, people are trading funny money for something else they hope will retain value and be worth something after a reset of some sort.

its not a matter of if but when and due to all the fuckery central banks get up to its impossible to know when until it actually happens.
the fact that comex traditionally only has 1-2% of orders for gold and silver put out for delivery yet the past few months thats surged to 90-100% suggests those in the know are gearing up for something and they dont have faith in the institutions.
central banks are buying up large in precious metals too, so is china. theyre all buying at insane prices and those fuckers dont do it to lose money either.

even look to the US sharemarket, the big boys are quietly exiting or downsizing their positions and the smaller players and average joe citizen are buying up outve fomo, the poor cunts are gunna get left holding the bag and yet another epic wealth transfer is in the making.

how are your cryptos going Ed? i have little interest so dont follow it much. several of my mates are heavily into it with a mixed bag of results but mostly theirs have stagnated, only 1 of my mates is doing well from it but he lives and breathes it 24/7.

“the big boys are quietly exiting or downsizing their positions and the smaller players and average joe citizen are buying up outve fomo”

The big boys as you call them are generally large managed funds, they typically stay invested throughout the cycle. Some of the hedge funds may be reducing their positions or taking short cover but they also generally will still hold most long positions. It is extremely difficult if not impossible to predict the direction of markets. Ultimately there will be another crash at some point it always happens but it is entirely possible that markets could rise another 50% or more before it happens.

The Consumer Right to KnowAt its heart, this isn’t about lawsuits. It’s about something simpler: the right to make an informed choice.

  • Tobacco comes with graphic health warnings.
  • Alcohol has clear pregnancy warnings.
  • Medications are required to provide side effect lists, usage restrictions, and safety handouts.
  • Even energy drinks disclose caffeine content and risk disclaimers.
  • Do they?
