New Zealand First has today introduced a Member’s Bill that seeks to state in law that “New Zealand” is the official geographic name of our country. Over the past few years, we have had a bunch of unelected bureaucrats, officials, government departments, and politicians trying to change our country’s name by stealth – with no permission or consent from the people. The “New Zealand (Name of State) Bill” confirms that ‘New Zealand’ is our country’s official name, and it is only parliament and the people, not bureaucrats, government departments, or officials, that have the authority to make decisions about the name of the country.

The vast majority of New Zealanders are shocked at this insidious creep of misguided and misinformed cultural history of the name ‘Aotearoa’. Any true historian or cultural expert would know that it was never the original Māori name for New Zealand – and we should not allow it to be misused for cultural virtue signalling. Colonialist William Pember Reeves incorrectly used ‘Aotearoa’ in the late nineteenth century, now the cultural hand-wringers have embraced his mindset. Don’t force the South Island’s iwi Ngāi Tahu to use ‘Aotearoa’. In 2021, Ngāi Tahu said the history of the name ‘Aotearoa’ originally referred solely to the North Island. Putting the name “New Zealand” in law will also provide constitutional clarity and legal certainty.

The name ‘New Zealand’ is recognised around the world as the name of our country, and any uncertainty about that risks our global economic markets and political identity that we have built, and spent billions of dollars promoting, over many decades. Our country’s name is New Zealand and should not change unless the people of our country decide to change it.

Gaza’s media office has accused Israel of violating the ceasefire with Hamas 47 times since the truce came into effect in early October, killing 38 Palestinians and wounding another 143.

“These violations have included crimes of direct gunfire against civilians, deliberate shelling and targeting, and the arrest of a number of civilians, reflecting the occupation’s continued policy of aggression despite the declared end of the war,” reads the statement.

Israel has repeatedly bombed Lebanon despite a November ceasefire that brought to an end more than a year of hostilities with the militant group Hezbollah that culminated in two months of open war.

It may surprise you to know that I am not a Hamas supporter, but the whole world is awake to the Israeli PR machine. Neither are to be trusted an inch, but you are so determined to cheer for the Israeli war criminals.
I’m baffled that often the same people who argue there is no excuse for invading another country (Russia/Ukraine) approve of Israel bombing the BeeJesus out of everyone around them so they can expand their borders at will – but I also wonder why you are determined to take an opposing view so personally.

FJA

Israel has never considered “expanding its borders at will”. They have, however handed back captured areas in the past when under no obligation to do so, which has bitten them in arse on occasion.

If they’re doing it now, perhaps it’s because they are surrounded by violent death-cultists who wish death upon them and, as Curious pointed out, upon dumbarses (and that’s my polite substitution), who apologise for them.

The fact that you even describe the Israelis as war criminals says everything. Do you know what Muslims do to their victims? Historically and currently? Have a read about the Armenian massacre in the 1920s for just a taste.

Fuck me, the Israelis aren’t perfect, but even in relative terms are saints compared to the utter vermin you carry water for. And I’ll repeat again – a consistent minimum of around 48% of Gazans support Hamas or similar groups.

As far as taking things personally goes, the people commenting on this blog are freedom-oriented. Which means you can say and think what you like within reason (Ed. of course is the ultimate arbiter), but don’t expect people to react well when someone supports cunts whose tenets and actions are antithetical to freedom. And don’t be a smart cunt snd suggest that I’m talking about “Zionists”.

Private Godfrey
Reply to  FJA

Is the West Bank within Israeli borders?
people commenting on this blog are freedom-oriented except when they don’t agree with what someone else has to say? That’s an echo-chamber.
Many of the world’s geopolitical experts are railing at Israeli actions in Gaza, but I guess they demonstrate an open minded view of the world.
Keep reading the Jerusalem Times and you’ll be happy you’ve got it right.

I haven’t noted many posters on this site arguing against the Russian position in Ukraine. Nato encouraged Ukraine to attack the Donbass and Russia responded. Similarly Hamas are responsible for what is happening in Gaza and Israel responded. In case you don’t recall Israel completely withdrew from Gaza in 2005 and handed it back to the Palestinians who elected Hamas in 2007.
What have Hamas spent all the subsequent aid on, building tunnels and lobbing missiles into Israel. (Short version)

Private Godfrey
Reply to  Curious

In 2005, Israel unilaterally withdrew its troops and settlers from Gaza, though it retained control of its shared border, airspace and shoreline, giving it effective control of the movement of people and goods.
Is it really so surprising the Palestinians looked to Hamas for assistance?

A reminder for Chippy of what happened last time, from a Good Oil poster

” Last time they promised the earth and delivered nothing, nil, zero, zilch. What sparse activity that did occur was wreathed in incompetence and never completed:
Here’s just one small example: On the 18th of August 2020 the government announced 147 shovel-ready projects with a total funding value of NZ $2.3 billion that will create 20,000 jobs. As at 30 June 2021, the status report by Crown Infrastructure shows that:

– the Govt has only spent $382m.
- Only 2683 jobs (FTE) have been created, with projected number only 4280 (FTE).

The majority aren’t shovel ready, most will unlikely to be started, let alone completed! “

Chippy’s first investment by the Fund will be for money tree orchards. Chippy reports the greater the initial tax investment will increase a much higher productivity from the money trees.

Marvellous!

It’s as Mandame, the communist standing for NYC says about his proposal for free public transport. When asked how he’ll pay for that he promises “to raise the funding that was previously paid by fares”. No details provided, just another promise to give free stuff.

Lawyer and serial director Susan Peterson has been appointed as the new Chair of Kiwibank to presumably guide the state-owned bank to a new ownership model.

After eight years as a Bell Gully lawyer, she joined ANZ as General Counsel in 2000, leaving to be a professional director in 2013. The roster is long and includes ASB

She replaces Labour-appointed Jon Hartley, who has had the role since 2019. Hartey was an ex-Anglican priest and did not seek reappointment.

No-one ever asks why we really need an ever increasing population other than some vague waffle that roughly translate as “big is good” or “just because”.

When I was born I joined a NZ population of 1,892,000. Now as I sit in the departure lounge I am one of 5,330,000. In 76 years we have gone from jobs for everyone to lifetime unemployment. From roomy sections to proposed 15 storey slums. From space to move to queues to enter National parks. From transport to gridlock.

It isn’t progress & if it was the price paid is too high.
