Initiated in April 1975 with Prime Minister Gough Whitlam turning the first sod at Tarcoola—accompanied by a dramatic dynamite blast—this project aimed to replace the outdated, flood-ravaged narrow-gauge Central Australia Railway, which had snaked from Port Augusta to Alice Springs since 1929 but was plagued by termites devouring wooden sleepers, relentless derailments in the wet season, and catastrophic washouts that stranded trains in the arid wilderness. The new line, branching off the existing Trans-Australian Railway at Tarcoola and carving northward through the unforgiving outback, promised reliability in an all-weather standard-gauge corridor, free from the vulnerabilities of the old Finke route. Completed in October 1980 after five grueling years and costing millions, it involved colossal earthworks—153 million cubic meters of dirt shifted—along with the laying of 146,000 tonnes of rail and 2 million concrete sleepers, all to anchor human ingenuity against the desert’s ceaseless erosion and shifting sands. I joined the Manguri operation in ’77, landing myself smack in the middle of this historic railway project. Our siding—one of nine fresh names on the map that year—perched 200 kms north of Tarcoola and just 40 from Coober Pedy, that strange underground town where opal miners hid from the sun’s fury. We built the Manguri railway stations in heat that would make the devil sweat; by ten each morning, the thermometer hit 45 degrees and stayed there, punishing every exposed inch of skin. The dust was our constant companion—not ordinary dust, but a fine red powder that invaded everything. It clogged my nose until breathing felt like sucking air through sandpaper, crusted my eyelashes until I blinked red tears, and crunched between my molars with every mouthful of food. By day’s end, our tools, our caravans, even our skin turned the same rust colour, until we all became red ghosts moving through red hills under skies blackened with flies, chasing water mirages that danced forever at the edge of sight.

The morning that changed everything broke with a blood-orange sunrise. I rubbed grit from my eyes and froze mid-stretch. There on the siding lay the future: quarter-mile lengths of continuously welded rail gleaming like wet paint. Ninety sections of unbroken steel caught the dawn light and threw it back in defiance of the ancient desert. No more clickety-clack—these seamless rails would carry trains smooth as silk across country that had swallowed men whole since time began. The metal seemed alive, expanding in the morning heat already building toward another 45-degree scorcher, contracting again when darkness would bring its bitter chill. I stood there sweating, understanding what I was seeing: not just steel, but the spine of a new Australia, reaching its vertebrae north toward Alice Springs and the Territory beyond.

Then came another monster from the red horizon—a freight train materializing like a mirage, bearing civilization’s bones. The concrete sleepers arrived first, each thick as a man’s chest, nestled in wagons that moaned with the burden. Unlike the old timber sleepers that termites had feasted on for decades, these steel-veined blocks promised to hold fast against the desert’s constant shape-shifting. Twenty-eight cars crawled past, each carrying forty tons of these sentinels that would soon anchor the new line to the ancient land. Behind them rumbled sixteen more wagons, heavier still, loaded with fifty-three tons each of bluestone ballast—jagged chunks quarried from distant hills. This broken stone would cradle the rails, drain away rare floodwaters, and resist the earth’s attempts to reclaim what man had built. The sharp-edged ballast would be the final defense against a landscape that buckled steel with its heat by day and snapped it with cold by night.



Back then, they weren’t just laying track—they were writing Australia’s story in steel and concrete across her red belly. Politicians bickered in Canberra while the workers bled under that merciless sun, their supply trucks sometimes weeks late on roads that disappeared in dust storms. Nights brought bone-deep loneliness; the nearest pub was often a hundred kilometers away, and letters from home arrived wrinkled and sun-faded. But when that first locomotive thundered through in 1980, every blister and sunburn felt worth it. Now tourists sip champagne on The Ghan where we once cursed and sweated, their air-conditioned carriages gliding over country that nearly killed us, never knowing each sleeper beneath them was laid by hands cracked like the desert floor.

The 240 ft lengths of track on the wagons, did they chain each end solidly to let the middle bend and move around. I don’t think this would work as there would be to much distance between the inside and outside bend.
I don’t think that they would chain down on each wagon, as it would not allow bending to go around corners.
Or did they chain down solidly the middle to allow the ends to move around and slide back and forward as the train went around corners. I think they would go with this method.
The other question is how did they get the rail off the wagon and on the ground?

Just fifty years ago but already another era. An era when something was needed, something was done. Nowadays, especially in Godzone, five years wouldn’t get a project of this size past the consent stage. We’re looking back on a time when progress was possible.
