Hipkins: tax, borrow and spend.

The fundamental problem is that the population has discovered it can vote itself the treasury.

Once an entitlement has been passed, it is near impossible to reverse. For example, then Opposition Leader John Key stated that “Working for Families” was “Communism by stealth”. Yet, when he was PM, he did nothing to abolish it.

Why? Because it would have been political suicide.

I have written up a thought experiment which I called the Taxpayer Republic. The gist of it is only those who pay net tax get suffrage. If more entitlements are given from the generosity of the taxpayers, the pool of voting taxpayers shrinks in accordance. A hopeful curb to politicians who are overly generous with other people’s money.

The Taxpayer Republic: A Thought Experiment for Post-Democratic Governance – No Minister

Of course, there was some pushback that I suggested laissez-faire capitalism was not possible—IMHO such is possible only under Anarcho-Capitalism.

I followed that criticism (which I think is fair) with:

Ways to Wealth: Profit and Plunder – No Minister

Where I warn what happens when a State does not prioritise military considerations—the plunder motive will come to the fore.

I am in no ways wedded to my thought experiment, so feel free to highlight flaws—preferably with ways to improve the thought experiment.

Labour created massive problems by printing, borrowing and spending dump trucks full of money, with the usual pocket pissing that saw many at the top get filthy rich.

It is always about money. Ask Ardern. She is valued at over $50m

Thanks Colinxy & here in the same vein, you may find interesting.

An interesting article, fable? point of view put to Davy Crockett.

…… the government ought to have in the Treasury no more than enough for its legitimate purposes. …..
……. The power of collecting and disbursing money at pleasure is the most dangerous power that can be entrusted to man, particularly under our system of collecting revenue by a tariff, [tax] which reaches every man in the country, no matter how poor he may be, …….
http://www.ai.mit.edu/projects/im/magnus/misc/nytg.html

As even Davy Crockett had to ponder long & hard about the munifence practiced by government to some others.

It is to find the principles, to really grow & understand, where people so often conveniently forget if they ever figured some of these things out.

This runs deep, as the first true communist I ever met was my mother, who so often would take from one, in the name of sharing, or hold back, to placate another sibling for the so called good & control of the family/community.

So it would seem our so called representatives have started from the cradle & so are able to take to the system like a duckling to water.
Grown-up? Reasoning? Never or long gone, for their avantage.

That was quite fascinating, thanks. Though I think that the population has grown so used to entitlements that not even Davy Crockett, could he even be elected today, could roll them back.

My thought experiment was to try and think of way that could keep the generosity of spending other people’s money in check, and therefore not rely on the characters of people like Horatio Bunce to admonish willing politicians. Most politicians these days would be most unwilling to change their opinions unless the person in the mirror said otherwise.

…..”They will get to him”…..

How? If the weirdo gets a custodial sentence, which I doubt, at his arrival at prison he will be assessed for risks eg suicide, reprisal attacks, gang affiliations.

If there’s a chance that he’ll be targeted because of his past or his convictions he will be segregated from other prisoners. He would then be locked down in an individual cell for 23 hours a day & any contact with others will be supervised & restricted to other “at risk” losers. Contact with the mainstream prison population would be non existent.

Corrections take their duty to keep detainees alive quite seriously.

Anyone interested about conditions & behaviour in NZ prisons may want to beg, borrow, buy or steal a copy of Rhonda Hapi-Smith’s book ‘Inside the Wire’. She was until 2017 a prison officer usually based at Mangaroa.

It’s not a great literary masterpiece but a good factual account of what goes down.

An elderly but hardy cocky from out back of Eketahuna way once told a young female neighbour that if she wanted to live a long life, the secret was to sprinkle a pinch of gunpowder on her oatmeal each morning.

She did this religiously & lived to the age of 103.

She left behind 14 children, 30 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren & a 25 foot hole where the crematorium used to be.

Pauline Hansen calls out the Australian government, in a “Where are we?” speech at a  CPAC Conservative Political Action Conference 2025 at Mar-a-Lago.
The full transcript here:—

…… but the Australian Labor Party will NEVER… MAKE…. AUSTRALIA…. GREAT…. AGAIN, despite a desperate need to turn our country around.

Under Labor’s weak governance, Australia is being flooded with up to 740,000 migrants a year.

That’s despite a housing crisis where we have more than 280,000 Australians being assisted by specialist homeless services. …..

Also touches on a number of other important issues that Albanese is taking Australia down.

Many women are short of two things men do have – work it out and look at what happens when women are in position of power – Arden/Mahuta/Sepulonie/Pelosi/Merkel/La Garde/Harris/Clinton – sma eofr some men as well but the % is weighted to the females.Exceptions to the female rule however were impressive – Thatcher/Golda Meir

The longest lasting & probably most successful democracy was that of Athens from about 580BC to 86BC. It effectively nullified the power of the tribes who had ruled previously & substituted a system where governance was in the hands of citizens.

Direct participation was the key though I concede that it left decision making open to mob influence & undue haste. (Representative democracy such as we endure suffers from lobbying & inertia instead.)

But the influence of the girlchild voter with feelz wasn’t a problem mostly because women, foreigners & slaves were not enfranchised. Voting rights were restricted to freemen who owned property.

History may have provided the answer to the problems!

...History may have provided the answer…

Voting rights were restricted to freemen who owned property.

yes
and how NZ was before 1890
Which is where the maori male got the vote before non land-owning white fullas
The Maori were joint owners of their land
in principle.

look at when women got the vote in US
Straight away went for banning alcohol to create a wealthy violent criminal. class that has never been wiped out
Near 14 years of violence, law breaking and making ordinary citizens criminals when they wanted a cold beer
Led to massive poo lice corruption and bribery that never went away.

Women should Not have the vote .
Too emotional and easily persuaded to run with the pack instead of thinking about the issues .

NZ came very, very close to having prohibition legislation passed just over 100 years ago. Only the return of the WW1 soldiers swung the vote which was held with the 1919 general election the 1917 election being postponed by the war.

…..”On 7 December 1919, prohibition gained 49.7 percent of the vote; of the 543,762 votes originally cast, the prohibition lobby only lost out by 1632 votes and of the 1744 special votes, 278 were for prohibition.”…..

Briscoe Group sales dip as Rebel Sport slump offsets homeware gains.
However, over the third-quarter total group sales fell by 1.76%, driven by a decrease in sporting goods sales of 7.33%. Homeware sales grew by 1.8% in comparison.
Duke said sporting goods sales were impacted by the transformation of its Panmure Rebel Sport into a new flagship “Rebel X” concept, which was on track to open in late November.
“The third quarter presented a mixed trading environment, with continued pressure on consumer sentiment and discretionary spending.
