Was watching a travel program on prime last night. Chris Tarrant train trips. This one was in Argentina. He was interviewing 4 survivous of the sinking of the Argentinian battle ship during the Fauklands war in 1982. 300 sailors lost their lives
One of them said politians and governments start wars and the countries youth fight and die in them. Thatcher needed a distraction in GB, and so did the Argentine dictator.
So they had the fauklands war. That was 43 years ago, and nothing has changed. Politians haven’t learnt anything from history and I doubt they ever will
That war was totally unnecessary as was the sinking of the General Belgrano.

A minor point concerning the Argentine naval vessel ‘ARA Admiral Belgrano; the US-built ‘Light Cruiser’ (Named the USS ‘Phoenix’ in American service) which the Agentinans’ had acquired in 1952.
The Admiral Belgrano was definitely NOT a ‘Battleship’ but was instead a medium-level, gun-equipped naval vessel which wiki defines as being a ‘…Small or medium-sized warship’ rather than the ‘… Large, heavily armored warship with a main battery consisting of large guns, designed to serve as a capital ship’ which is how the same source defines a ‘Battleship’.
As the ‘Battleship’ appellation gives the Argies more military status and capability than they actually had, the difference is small – but important.

I was 20 years in Local Government ending up very well paid and a reasonable amount of stress. Reached 50, had a 58 y.o. brother die, returned from a 4 week overseas holiday and one night wrote out a resignation letter. The next morning looked at the letter and said that still looks good so handed it in.
Best thing I ever did. Had no idea what I was going to do but did it anyway. Ended up starting a business, then travelling overseas for 2/3 years, getting remarried and the last 20 years have been the most enjoyable and happiest of my life.
So S.B. – a big downtick from me towards less money (lots) but so much more happiness.

uptick… guaranteed job/hours with lower but steady income (normal wage earning job)
downtick… uncertain job/income but chance of making very good money… or no money (self employed/ contract/ entreprenuer type work)
To me both questions are too ridgid in what they ask, Ive had jobs I dislike that pay well and stuck with them just coz of the money, had others with lower pay that looked like they lead to better happyness, found out that its not quite right, the high payed ones I disliked id go back to, the low paying ones became an issue and became very unhappy, possibly more unhappy than the original unhappy job. My new rule of thumb is just stick with untill you are going to knock some cunt out then move on
Used to go the contracting route – good money, but never a guarantee there’s another gig in the pipeline. And no holidays. Stressful.
Done the hard yards now, enjoying working as an employee for less $$ and stress. And time off.
You’ve answered your own question when you stated “due to different stages or change in priorities in ones life”. Once you’ve raised your kids & own your home your motivation & goals change. From that point on success leads to a better standard of nursing home & failure to a lack of luxuries.
The stakes have changed. You have less to gain & less to lose than you did twenty years ago.
I’ll not have a nursing home suck the life out of my estate. Once my healthy life years have passed (Ref: Healthy Life Years – Wikipedia) I’ll be looking to check out.
Yup. 100% on the money. I’ve watched too many friends and relos die a slow painful death due to some “sky fairies are watching you!”
I will step out when it suits me. I will call the shots on my end of time here.

Morning all, you will be pleased to know I have survived the latest atmospheric river. It was harsh and scary, but prayer and teddy bears on the window sills got us through. At the height of the storm we even had puddles forming on the road out front and I nearly had to put gumboots on to take the dog for a walk. The horror was real but with the appropriate counseling I hope to recover before Christmas. God bless all those fluoro clad clipboard warriors who were ready to leap out of the woodwork but were fortunately not needed on this occasion.

The current satellite pic is showing a bit more rain for Tarquins lawn today and drop or to for south Wairarapa and welly wood.
The Wairarapa was spared. At one stage yesterday I was tempted to hose down the driveway & invite TV1 to film the result in case they needed footage of the dire effects of the forecasted floods.
Taranaki was spared too. Sun coming out!
Never had atmospheric rivers when I was young must be something new. We only ever had rain, sometimes it was heavy sometimes it wasn’t. Privileged upbringing I guess.

All road users should contribute in proportion to their use of the country’s roads, Transport Minister Chris Bishop says.
This comes as changes have been proposed not only to the country’s Road User Charges system, but also to tolling in New Zealand with Bishop saying the Government is planning to introduce annual CPI adjustments to make tolling “fairer and more predictable” compared to having ad-hoc increases.
(The CPI – consumers price index – is New Zealand’s official measure of inflation for households).
Changes to the Road User Charges (RUC) system were announced by the Government in August. At the time, Bishop said all vehicles – whether they’re petrol, diesel, electric or hybrid – would eventually be paying for roads based on distance and weight through electronic road user charges.
Bishop in August said Cabinet had agreed to a series of legislative changes that would shift how New Zealand drivers pay for the country’s roading network – through electronic road user charges, rather than petrol tax.
This means New Zealand drivers, who currently pay a Fuel Excise Duty (FED, or petrol tax), which is about 70 cents per litre of petrol, would be transitioning to the electronic road user charges system.

People sometimes become offended by the term “Pakeha”. I’m not & they shouldn’t be. The word that should ring alarm bells is “Tauiwi” as it translates to “alien, stranger, foreigner, non-Māori”. It’s made up from tau, a prefix indicating something “strange” & iwi meaning tribe.
Maori were never a nation. They consist of tribes of people with common ancestors linking back to the migration(s) 800 odd years ago. They have zero allegiances to Maori not of their tribe & even within that tribe their extended family comes first.
As such corruption comes naturally. It’s not really theft if you’re ripping off members of another iwi. Ditto with the kaumatua who head up tribal trusts & pretend pan Maori organisations such as Te Pati Tamihere. To the Maori way of thinking putting family first at every level, at any cost is seen as a good thing.

The organisations were expected to continue being “financially prudent in the tough economic and cost-of-living environment Tauranga ratepayers are experiencing”.
