My first job was in a small place packing up small items for postage and delivering around town. Looked after stock counting, unpacking goods in etc. Only 4 of us, the Boss, a travelling (South Island) salesman and receptionist/administration (my Sister In Law- how I got the job).
Have no idea what the pay was but I guarantee it was nowhere near todays rate for young people in relation to adult pay rates. Spent 2/3 years perhaps before I moved on and with a succession of jobs went further and further up the pay scale and job quality.
Doubt that job would exist now – stock would be more automated, couriers would do deliveries and a boy around the place would not be paid $24 or so. Actually the Company doesn’t now anyway.
My first proper job, started as a couple of hours a day aftér school then left school to do it full time, around 97/98, $5hr, that was working on diesel fuel pumps and injectors, the tradesman I was working under was on $23hr at the time, hes now on $45hr doing same job
i started part time at 10yrs old for after school job, big morning paper run from 12yrs old then started into dairy farming at 14yrs old weekends, holidays and the many times i was suspended from school. went full time at 15yrs old and started on 19k a year, by time i was 19 i was on 70k and earning more than my parents at the time.
im a bum now tho, just doing my own thing and catching up on jobs ive put off for past few years. do the odd day casual work just driving for a few mates. ill find something more permanent by winter if i cant find something to do and stay fully self employed.

Gisborne and Hawke’s Bay’s combined unemployment rate climbs nearly 70% year on year
A nearly 70% increase in unemployment numbers year on year across Gisborne and Hawke’s Bay are a sign of ‘economic mismanagement’.
East Coast MP Dana Kirkpatrick, from National, says the Government was working “hard to fix the damage done to our economy during a period of reckless government spending” under the previous Government.
The Household Labour Force Survey from Stats NZ showed a 69.8% (rounded to one decimal place) increase in unemployment across Gisborne and Hawke’s Bay year on year, and an increase of just over 78% from 2023 to 2025.

You can bet that unless the windows were open most of the day, that place would get as mouldy as heck. Probably also cold.
The difference I guess between “the old days” when such places were ok, and now, is that then there was usually someone home so the windows could be left open.
Running a dehumidifier would suck out much moisture but many tenants would balk at the cost of running it and emptying it would probably be beyond their capabilities. The landlord would be required to turn up daily to perform that basic job. //
Got to say that fining the guy stupid amounts won’t actually help improve the property, either. If he does try to address issues, he’s (even) more likely to take shortcuts.
But hey, I don’t like slumlords. I attended a talk by a young Dunedin realtor turned property investor, then later went to an open home of one of his rentals. After viewing it I turned to my then wife and said, “I would rather be poor than make money renting out places like that.” Guess my wish came true, lol.
