Well, we know that most crime is committed by a few people. Once securely locked up for a long time, the need for all these trials will diminish. Perhaps the 3-strikes law needs to apply much earlier and for longer.

Its so easy for the police or any agency to charge a person or company with no consequences for them, regardless of the outcome.
Start by removing the Prosecution service from Police control. In the Northern Territory, it used to be and may still be, that the police had to prove their case to an independent authority with a reasonable chance of success before they got the cash to go to court.
Had discussions about this with Simon Power years ago. Sensible Sentencing agreed it was what we should do.
Meanwhile, crime has got worse, court failures have increased, innocent people have had their lives destroyed, corruption in the police and in high places, including the law firm,s has not got better, and all the while the taxpayer gets screwed.

I just got to thinking about Christmas presents that were thoughtful but ultimately not necessarily great in every respect.

In NZ open justice is on life support & the undertaker is on standby. In Auckland a 21-year-old man has been charged with murder after a fatal stabbing on Friday.
The police applied for & the coroner issued an “an urgent suppression order, preventing the media from reporting the dead man’s name and other details.” Unnecessary secret squirrel crap is the new norm but this gagging order hits the ball out of the park & down the motorway.
