Interesting day yesterday. Had a sunny 24 morning, then cloud, then hail later and some cloud burst rain, then best of all some yelling we could hear about 3 doors down. Go outside to have a decent look, as you do, and there is two police cars and a youngish guy guy handcuffed and being put in one car.
A tall bird holding a phone camera pointing it out this happening why lots of yelling going on. Then heard another car rushing up the street, I thought you are going to get a surprise but it was a third police car. Not a bad turnout for 7 at night on Christmas Day.
Great excitement, nothing like too much sherry in the Christmas Trifle to wind family gatherings up.

I’m enjoying my 2023 Kawasaki Z900 Z900 | 2024 | Kawasaki (that I bought brand new as a run-out special back in February). It’s slower than my Yamaha R6 600 cc sports bike that I owned from 2001 to 2025 from new (put 178,000 km on it). My sports bike days are over.
The Z900 is so comfortable and user-friendly. It has so much torque and is so relaxing to ride. It’s the perfect motorcycle for my stage of life. I added a small fairing to take the wind blast off my chest and reduce fatigue on longer rides.
I’m looking forward to touring the South Island at some time in the near future.
When I arrived in NZ 33 years ago I bought a Honda VFR 750. I didn’t keep it long, less than a year. What decided me to get rid of it was my growing sense of responsablity for a young son and daughter and a speeding ticket on the Sanson – Fielding straight where the cop told me “I clocked you at 164KPH and I know you were slowing down.”
What is the point of a bike that will do the legal limit in first gear? I have never ridden a motorbike since that time though often I do miss it.

On one of my old utes, could see ahead & had all the water cooling & heater hoses renewed.
Figured that out after the 20 year old ute blew a hose twice & was lucky to figure it before major damage. Another one was to renew the water pump, which proved to be just in time.
It is as it always has been, use the power, & see the gas needle more quickly goes down.
But if you are cruising well, can be surprisingly thrifty.
The only change I would agree with are ABS brakes.
When my 20 year old ute, which did not have ABS brakes, makes wonder one if the car in front severely brakes, for what ever reason, could I stay behind it?
Sure one does allow even more space ahead, but on a busy motorway, not that easy.
And then to close the gap, in preparation to possible pass.
Plus just to have better braking & steerage.
However on metal roads, it can be a draw back, as it will not build up a pile of stones.
I know by the different feelings on grass, but do not clearly know.
At the same time I have the reflex of also taking the braking pressure off too, & also to gain steerage, then the old pump the brakes concept when things feel “washy”.
There is a market demand for reliabiliy, for back to the basics, like in the cell phone world, just text, just be a phone & cut the “smart arse” concepts out..
I run around town in an old Mazda Demio which I originally bought for about $2500 with intention of keeping it for a few months until I found what I wanted. That was 10 years ago and I’ve still got because it just keeps going with very few hassles (250k on the clock) and serves it’s purpose and I’m not a car fanatic.
One thing I do is use a product called Xado –I have put it in the oil a couple of times. It has metaliic “nanoparticles” in it which fills in the pits on the cyclinder improving the compression. I know it sounds a bit far fetched but when I first got told about it I took the car to our mechanic who laughed a bit but he agreed to do a compression check before and after (after 1000km with the Xado in the oil). Before the compression figures varied all over the place. After they were all very even. You can really notice the difference when driving.

Interesting as my automatic slush-box is not as smooth, and a bit more clunky.
And I see Xado Repco also has additives for automatics too.
The auto transmission supposedly have a “forever” oil, so no oil change is to be done, simply No sump oil plug.
However when people are towing or heavy loads, it is known that the transmission does stuff up, proving to be expensive.
There are two after market upgrade kits, for heavier work, to even more heavy duty Aussie standards.
Utube has shown me how it is done, though I would use a knowledgable mechanic, & that confirmed the concept of “forever” oil, (no sump plug), and the tricks how to get around it.
Though at some time, at a certain point of mileage there is an ending, the balance of $ in refurbishment.
As one still needs to get a Wof, or Cof.
Just to bear in mind Registration could get cheaper for the older “classic” cars, that is when it reaches 25 years old. 🙂 & even less when vintage at 40 years, so long as you can get that wof.

I would recommend late March to mid-April (spring time) in Honshu.
The Honshu winters are dry, bright and crisp. Early November is nice. It won’t rain much, and the typhoons are over. It’s also a lot cooler.

Learning a handful of Japanese phrases will really help you. It shows that you have a “good attitude” (very important).

I would avoid food colours like the plague. Couldn’t care less about innovation or heresy food colours are generally not healthy. I like pavlova but very rarely eat it due to the extreme sugar levels.
