the whole thing needs a good reform, means testing to start with, then raise the age of eligibility, then index it to av life expectancy… then slowly get rid of it. im pretty sure thats why they started kiwisaver so they can fully ditch it by 2040.

Bill English put in place increasing the age of super rising from 65 to 67 in 2040 but Labour cancelled that.

It was put in place a long time ago, and it is now on a pay-as-you-go system
Politicians did that, and it was reinforced by National and Muldoon.
Douglass had earlier created a super scheme, which Muldoon destroyed in favour of the current system. It is the political history of what happened.
Cullen decided to create KiwiSaver. Like most things politicians do it was a good idea, not well done and even worse, the arsewipes called Cindy and Sausageman decided to rob the scheme.
The Kiwisave scheme was set up to create retirement savings for individuals at the time they retired after the age of 65. It is subsidised by employers and is based on the earnings of the person. Peters always argued that the accounts should be individually based, and that’s a debate.
The idea is good, as we can see from Aussie, but there are flaws in the thinking and the system.
The options as managers have sorted themselves out
There is an issue for those who never work or declare an income, but that should be their problem.
The big issue really is that when young and raising a family, the first call on a couple’s funds should be to own a house or similar asset. People with families in fixed homes creat stable families.
Therefore, the first saving scheme for people should be directed to that cause. Funds should then go into a high-earning fund that can be used for their house purchase at a suitable time.
Only when that’s in place should the fund roll into a retirement savings. High growth for a big chunk of it.
All the time, of course, the employer is going to subsidise this. And for those that declare income, they should need to top it up as essentially they are employed by self.
On that, I have just emailed Act to get the GST threshold updated.
Currently 60k, but based on buying power should be upgraded to 100k until 2031.
Last updated in 2010, and is now less than the average income.
Imagine the time and cost savings that will bring to thousands, but more importantly, it would remove a barrier to more commerce and cash dealings.
We all know people who don’t earn more than 60k because of “paperwork”
Kiwisavers can already withdraw their funds towards the purchase of their first home. What are you actually proposing that would be different?
In Australia I believe a saver has a separate fund for house buying.

I never took out Kiwi saver. I figured lowering the mortgage quicker made sense, and further it was a Labour initiative and I did not like the “you can’t touch the money until we says so” approach. So now I am mortgage free, own 2 and a quarter properties and survive off relief teaching… Yup some may say I was stupid not getting the employment contribution, I reckon its balanced by the interest saved by loading the mortgage payments.

In the main I agree with you S.B. I am certainly aware that todays workers are paying for all benefits amongst other things. If I recall correctly I think I saw the other day that 1 in 7 adults are on a benefit or assistance……..but that did not include those on superannuation. kiwisaver has been running since 2007?, so that would be 33yrs of savings and if no nest egg by then well i dont think any amount of time could prep that person for retirement.
imo the knowledge of free weekly handout as a 65th birthday present makes many complacent and lack personal responsibility. it would be an interesting experiment to see the change in attitudes and savings if it were to be announced its getting phased out.

Super as it stands is a social contract. We supported the super payments to our parents and grandparents now it’s the turn of our children and grandchildren to support us. If SB doesn’t drown himself in the meantime some day his children and grandchildren will help support him. Simple but mostly effective. Yes there are problems. Our parents were extra productive following the war years and the younger generations too concerned about wrecking the planet to get on and have enough kids, coupled with longer life expectancy so the numbers are a bit top heavy at present. A bit of tweaking may be in order to help make it through this bubble but the basic concept is sound. Over the last 40 years like many of the other commentators I have fulfilled my part of the contract and probably paid more than most so don’t tell me that I am getting something I am not entitled to receive.

Personally as well as contributing to previous generations I pay most if not all of my super(varies by year) in tax. Yes I know tax covers other things as well but it’s not like it’s all take and no give. I suspect the wealthy like ED, Mikey and Nasska probably pay at least the equivalent in tax as well. You could help by having some more kids or staying in the river longer to increase your income. You are paying tax on your fossicking efforts aren’t you?

StatsNZ is pointing out that updated demographic data shows the proportion of births to mothers aged under 25 years in 2025 reached a record low of 1 in 7 births, half of what it was a generation ago. There were 57,705 live births registered in 2025. In 1995 (around one generation ago), the number of births was similar, with 57,672 live births registered that year. In 1965 (around two generations ago), the number of births was slightly higher, at 60,045. Fourteen percent of births in 2025 were to mothers aged under 25 years (‘younger mothers’). This is down from 28 percent in 1995, and 46 percent in 1965. The median age of mothers who gave birth in 2025 was 31.7 years, up from 28.6 years in 1995 and 25.5 years in 1965.

Infrastructure plan pushes for user‑pays shift and tough calls on roads
ew Zealand’s first national infrastructure plan reveals a widening gap between what the country wants to build, what it’s getting and what it can actually pay for.
With costs escalating, alongside severe risks from natural hazards, the Infrastructure Commission is pushing for an overhaul. Users should largely pay for roading, telecommunication and water infrastructure, more money needs to be pumped into hospitals, and the country needs a complete catch up to lift water asset conditions and meet quality standards.
The plan, released by the Infrastructure Commission on Tuesday, laid out the risk of the way the country invests in infrastructure, saying if it doesn’t change, New Zealanders could miss out on the hospitals, schools, water systems, telecommunications and transport networks “they expect and deserve”.
“If we continue with the status quo, we’ll fall further behind,” the plan states.
The framework outlines guidance of what NZ can afford to spend over the next 30 years. Part of that recommended roads, telecommunications and water infrastructure national networks be funded by users to “free up general taxes to pay for social infrastructure such as hospitals and schools”.

Infrastructure Minister Chris Bishop said many of the Commission’s recommendations reflected work already underway by the Government.
“We will be studying these recommendations carefully and the Government will publish a response to the plan in June 2026,” he said.
“Infrastructure lasts for generations. Where we can build durable consensus, we should.”
Bishop said the country has real challenges ahead.
“We spend a lot on infrastructure – around 5.8% of GDP annually over the last 20 years, one of the highest in the OECD – yet we rank towards the bottom for efficiency, and fourth to last in the OECD for asset management.
“Many central government agencies do not properly understand what they own or have long-term investment plans. The assurance system for new projects and long-term investments is fragmented and inconsistent.”

Changing the NZ Super age won’t fix the country’s retirement system problems on its own, panel says at New Zealand Economics Forum, as Labour leader raises concern about ‘arbitrary raise’ in retirement age
Labour leader Chris Hipkins says there’s big questions for us as a country about how we fund superannuation in the long-term, but raising the age of eligibility isn’t one of those questions.
His comment comes after a panel discussion at the New Zealand Economics Forum in Hamilton last week, where the panel spoke about whether the system could keep up, the age of retirement, life expectancy, and potential tweaks and their impacts on the economy and future generations.
Facilitator and former politician Steven Joyce, ANZ chief economist Sharon Zollner, Milford Asset Management chief executive Blair Turnbull, Barrister and former politician David Parker, and Aged Care Association chief executive and former politician Tracey Martin made up the panel.
Part of the panel’s discussion was about how the retirement age would need to be raised to 72 or 73.
When asked about this on Monday, Hipkins told reporters he was concerned about “an arbitrary raise” in the retirement age.
“It would potentially cause significant hardship for New Zealanders who can’t work beyond 65,” he said.
