Government getting advice on tolling Auckland Harbour Bridge in order to build new crossing
Infrastructure Minister Chris Bishop warned the Government may need to put a toll on the existing Auckland Harbour Bridge as it looks to find ways to fund the new Waitematā crossing, which could be a new bridge or a tunnel.
The new crossing will be tolled, but the Government is getting advice on whether the existing bridge needs to be tolled as well, to stop people using the old bridge to avoid the toll on the new crossing, resulting in a new crossing that hardly anyone used.
Both National and Labour support building a new crossing over the Waitematā Harbour, but neither has allocated funding for it.
The Infrastructure Commission’s Infrastructure Plan, released on Tuesday, pondered a $9 toll, raising up to $9 billion towards the new crossing. The Auckland Harbour Bridge was itself tolled when it opened, but tolls were removed in 1984. The $9 figure represents the original toll adjusted for inflation.
The commission also said the toll would need to be applied to the existing harbour bridge, too.

Tolls are a pain, but if the alternative is no bridge or no road, then they are the better option. The thing to be wary of when considering tolls is that we already pay huge amounts of taxes for our roads. Both state highway or local roads, and if they bring in tolls, you can bet the family jewels that the government and local councils will not reduce the taxes or drop your rates.
As long as the tolls are directly hypothicated to cost and maintenance Tolls get my vote.

Nine dollars sounds a bit steep when it costs three fifty to get from Orewa to Warkworth on a pretty much brand new road at 110 kmh.
There was a bit somewhere on that. That still owes 180 million, so what that says is the toll is too cheap. Probably should be more.
The trouble is, people don’t value their time.

That varies, of course, but if you are employing someone to drive, it’s got to be in the $100 per hour range. ( bet plenty don’t believe that, but it is, and it’s often more. See what hourly rate other people charge you. Car dealers, accountants, lawyers and so on.)
It doesn’t take saving much time to knock a hole in that.
At $100.00 per hour, that is $1.67 per minute. Save 20 minutes and that $33.40
versus a toll of $3.50
Its an easy sum to work out.
And that doesn’t take into account the easier driving and wear and tear on the vehicle.

The Government has ditched plans for a referendum on a four-year election term.
Legislation was introduced last year to extend the term of Parliament from three years to four, but Justice Minister Paul Goldsmith now says the bill – after progressing to the justice select committee – will not make it to its final reading.
The bill was based off legislation drafted by ACT leader David Seymour in 2021. His party had won support for the policy during coalition negotiations, though the commitment was only to support the bill to a select committee.
On Wednesday, Goldsmith said that commitment, which had been agreed to by all coalition partners, had been fulfilled.

Maudlin, sentimental crap written by a self confessed religious freak. The deceased wasn’t a baby beaten to death by his caregivers or a teenage girl with angst. Rather he was a 26 year old adult who didn’t relish another fifty years of a crap life.
The mother’s attitude is overwrought but understandable:

The system didn’t execute him & “love” falls outside of a doctor’s remit. There;’s no slippery slope……just people making decisions over their own welfare & that doesn’t sit well with religious control freaks.
Going shopping for a doctor to sign off on your death sounds pretty slippery to me.
His mother said her son’s depression was seasonal and he went downhill as soon as the weather did. So his ”crap life” was possibly fixable.

It’s a bloated, tangled mess.
On the left are departments (the agencies that actually spend money and deliver services).
In the middle are portfolios (the things politicians are responsible for).
On the right are ministers (the humans who are meant to be accountable).
The image doesn’t show the countless smaller entities within each department. We have more than 250 regulatory agencies, for example.
The real point here is the coloured spaghetti between each column: one department can answer to multiple ministers, through multiple portfolios, with different levels of seniority. When everyone’s “responsible”, no one is responsible.
It’s a nightmare on paper, but it’s even worse in practice. It’s why Kiwis feel like government is everywhere, costs a fortune, and yet somehow nothing gets fixed. It’s one of the warning lights on the dashboard: a system that’s too big and too tangled to manage or trust.
In my State of the Nation speech I said ACT will campaign for smaller, more accountable government. That starts with some simple rules:
• No more than 20 ministers, all in Cabinet (we currently have 28, plus two under-secretaries)
• No more than 30 departments (we currently have 41)
• No department answering to more than one minister (MBIE answers to 23)
• And no more “vanity portfolios” with fancy titles but no real responsibility (Ministers for Auckland, South Island etc)
If we want better services, less waste, and rules that work for people, we need a government that’s answerable when it fails.
Parliament in Turmoil: Hipkins Labels Peters’ Remark ‘Pure Racism
In a fiery session of Parliament on Wednesday, Labour leader Chris Hipkins accused NZ First leader Winston Peters of indulging in “pure racism” after Peters appeared to single out a Green MP’s Pacific heritage during Question Time. The dispute erupted when Peters challenged a Pacific-heritage MP’s right to ask questions, prompting Hipkins to stand and declare:
“Members in this House are equal. For a member … to question whether someone is entitled to ask a question because of their country of origin is pure racism…” 
Hipkins didn’t stop there. He used the moment to call out what he described as rising “race-baiting” and “direct racism” in New Zealand politics, telling MPs that attacks on migrant and Pasifika communities had crossed a line. He also criticised National ministers for not challenging Peters’ remarks, saying silence was no longer acceptable. 
The confrontation underlines growing tensions in Parliament as election year politics heats up, with Hipkins warning that divisive rhetoric has no place in public life.

But can Winston get it to being a binding referendum ? ?
The catch being to get the numbers to bring in a binding referendum on this issue.
Or is it just a wipe his hands of this issue on the basis that he tried, while hitting a high point, his name in good books with many, before riding the wave in his election campaign.
After that cleanse out & close down the Waitangi Treaty Commission.
Cleanse out all the Treaty clauses in NZ legislation.
