Wellington CBD earthquake shake risk higher than thought, new research findsThe risk of stronger shaking in parts of Wellington’s CBD after an earthquake may be higher than previously thought, new research suggests.
Research published this month in the New Zealand Journal of Geology and Geophysics indicates the soft sediment basin beneath the city is up to twice as deep and has a steeper edge than thought.
With depths of an estimated 500 metres close to the regional stadium, 200m in much of Thorndon, and 150–200 metres beneath Waitangi Park, next to Te Papa, there’s an increased likelihood earthquake waves will be trapped and amplified – even if the quake is far away, the study found.
Victoria University of Wellington (VUW) researchers worked with colleagues from the United States on the study, which used new gravity and seismic reflection methods to determine the basin’s thickness and geometry.
“It just really highlights the importance of how the Wellington Basin can trap waves, and they can resonate and cause damage,” said lead author Professor Tim Stern from Victoria University.
Researchers discovered the western edge of the basin is defined by a steep, fault-like structure extending from Lambton Quay beneath the railway station, continuing west of the stadium and reaching toward the ferry terminal.
“The surprising thing was that this edge of the basin was in the place that it is,” Stern said.
While many had assumed the edge of the basin fell on the Wellington faultline by Tinakori Hill, it actually fell on the Lambton fault, he said.
The report predicted shaking could be amplified by about three times in a narrow corridor just east of the Lambton fault, rather than uniformly across the CBD.
“Much of the amplification is due to earthquake waves becoming trapped in the basin and resonating, much like waves caught in a swimming pool or bathtub,” said Stern.
Stern said the research had a “historical precedent”, with basin resonance thought to have contributed to sustained shaking in the CBD after the 2016 Kaikōura earthquake, which also caused extensive damage in Wellington city.
“Very distant earthquakes could also produce the same effect of trapping low-frequency waves in the Wellington area and into the Wellington Basin,” Stern told the Herald.
Two earthquakes in 1942 near Masterton also caused severe damage in Wellington, leaving buildings unrepaired and at least 10,000 chimneys damaged.
“What our study highlights is … that distant earthquakes are really important to consider, not just earthquakes on the local faults around Wellington,” Stern said.
The Wellington City Council told the Herald that it, with other organisations, was aware of the sediment basin beneath the central city.
“We will be interested to talk to the VUW team to know more about their findings,” a spokesperson said.

“The emergency stocks will be made available to the market over a timeframe that is appropriate to the national circumstances of each member country and will be supplemented by additional emergency measures by some countries,” the IEA said.
The announcement came as leaders of the Group of Seven advanced economies discussed the widespread economic fallout from the US-Israeli war with Iran, now into its second week, at a video conference meeting chaired by French President Emmanuel Macron.

Labour reshuffle: Willow-Jean Prime loses education portfolio
Willow-Jean Prime has lost the education portfolio, but picked up social development, as Labour reshuffles its decks ahead of the election.
Ginny Andersen will take on the education role, making her the third Labour MP to take on the role in just over a year.
Peeni Henare‘s departure from Parliament, along with Adrian Rurawhe earlier this year, has given Labour leader Chris Hipkins an opportunity to change things up.
“These refreshed portfolios ensure our team will hit the ground running when we win the election in November,” Hipkins said.
Willie Jackson, who had taken on the social development role last year, will instead take on Māori Crown Relations.
Speaking to the changes, Hipkins said Prime’s new social development role required “care, empathy, and a strong focus on improving outcomes for New Zealanders,” while Jackson would focus on running a “winning campaign” in the Māori seats.
Prime came under scrutiny last year after not responding to, and then declining, requests from the education minister for a meeting to discuss education reforms, and then criticising the government for not taking a more bipartisan approach.
But Hipkins said that “ancient history” and not the reason for Prime losing the education portfolio.
Hipkins said he still had confidence in her, and his reshuffle was about putting people in the places where he could make best use of their skills.
“Willow has got outstanding contacts in the social sector, she is going to be fighting hard to win Te Tai Tokerau for Labour as well. In the area around social development and employment, I think that’s an area where the government aren’t delivering what they’ve promised, and I think Willow is the right person to hold them to account for that.”
Among the other changes are Damien O’Connor picking up Henare’s defence spokesperson role, Reuben Davidson taking over economic development, and Tangi Utikere becoming the spokesperson for state-owned enterprises.

The eerie sight was set amongst kauri trees in Mackesy Bush Reserve on Mt Parihaka, a maunga with historical significance.
Many of the dolls have had knives, screws, and other sharp objects stabbed through them. Some have been torn apart and rebuilt into sinister-looking creations.
