Even a machine built to upright train cars couldn’t handle a 67-ton excavator lying on its side in a hole without help.
A routine demolition job in Washington, Pennsylvania, turned into an extraordinary rescue operation after a Caterpillar excavator broke through the floor of a parking garage and fell 15 feet into the structure below.
Getting it out required some of the most powerful heavy recovery equipment ever made, including the world’s largest rotator tow truck.
The excavator, weighing 135,000 pounds, ended up on its side at the bottom of a concrete pit. The operator, remarkably, walked away from the incident unassisted and was cleared by a medical team shortly after.
Calling in the giants
Bill’s Towing and Recovery was called in for the job, bringing two machines that aren’t used for everyday recoveries. The first was the Miller Industries Century M100, officially the world’s largest production rotator tow truck. The second was a John Deere 470RR, a specialized machine originally designed to right derailed railroad cars, with a lift capacity over 150,000 pounds.
The 470RR took the lead. But even a machine built to upright train cars couldn’t handle a 67-ton excavator lying on its side in a hole without help.
A recovery that demanded precision
Before lifting could start, the crew had to stabilize the situation. Workers filled in beneath one of the excavator’s tracks to create a solid surface. Without this, any lift could cause the machine to shift unexpectedly. A safety briefing took place before rigging began.
The plan was to use the M100 to steady the excavator while the 470RR rotated it upright. The first try didn’t go as planned because the machine didn’t move the way the crew needed. They held another safety meeting and tried a different approach.
This time, the team started the excavator’s engine, retracted its boom to shift the weight, and tried lifting again. The adjustment worked. The excavator backed up until its tracks reached the outer wall of the pit, giving the crew the footing they needed.
From there, the John Deere pulled it out while the excavator moved partly under its own power — a surprisingly clean exit for a machine that had just broken through reinforced concrete.
Why it matters beyond the spectacle
Heavy recovery operations of this scale rarely get public attention, but they are a highly specialized field where mistakes can have serious consequences.
A 67-ton machine in an unstable position inside a partly damaged structure leaves almost no room for error.
The repeated safety meetings before each lift attempt — a detail that drew some online mockery — reflect standard protocol in heavy recovery, where the sequence of forces applied must be planned meticulously. The fact that no one was injured and the excavator was recovered intact is the real measure of success here.
