Labour leader Chris Hipkins faces renewed scrutiny after denying ex-wife’s allegations
Chris Hipkins has admitted he thought about quitting as Labour leader over the past 24 hours as he continues to face scrutiny from allegations by his former wife.
After his ex-wife Jade Paul published a since-deleted Facebook post on Sunday containing the allegations, which do not suggest he was engaging in any unlawful activity, Hipkins issued a statement saying he rejected the claims “entirely”.
The Labour Party leader appeared on the Ryan Bridge Today show on Herald NOW at 7.30am this morning.
When asked by Bridge whether he had considered his role as leader might no longer be “right for me”, Hipkins said: “Yes of course, but I am committed to doing my job”.
Hipkins told Bridge he doesn’t know why his ex-wife made the allegations.

Hipkins said if people believed everything they saw on social media, “they’d have no faith in any other human being”.
“There is a lot on social media that is just wrong, that is vile, that is horrible. You know, the virtual vigilantes out there will spread all sorts of horrible things about all sorts of people. It’s not the way we should do things.

#. The minimums are 28 days’ cover of petrol, 21 days’ cover of diesel & 24 days’ cover of jet fuel. Seems as though we’re fairly well covered.
There are additional points to consider before putting the Coalition in front of a firing squad:
1). Refined fuel has a shelf life. Cetane & octane ratings take a hit if it is stored for more than a couple of months which naturally includes time in transit.
2). For this reason the only difference the retention of Marsden Point would have made is if they had six months worth of feedstock in reserve. They didn’t.

A mate has just got a permit for suction dredging on a local river … took 2 years to get a permit for access through DOC land.
Guy I know got 16 oz in 4 days with a 2″ suction dredge in Waimea Creek. Bottom is cracked papa … perfect natural riffle!
Worked on a mine … 20 metres over burden to get to 4 metres of wash for 1.5 grain! Hardly worth the effort!
Another mine with 7 6 foot screens and I fed 1800 buckets a day into two of them in 10 hour days. Mine was using about 20,000 litres of diesel a week. Must have been doing ok because after I left they went up to 9 screens!
Another mine I worked on we dug a hole 30 metres deep and the size of two footie fields. The whole 30 metres down to sand-stone bottom was gold bearing.
I heard about a miner that got onto a beach lead and got 300 oz in one day!

The old Mines Dept has metamorphosed into NZ Petroleum and Minerals, and they are the ones who issue the necessary Permits (Even for random fossicking on supposedly empty and unoccupied land) Their comment about fossicking is: ‘If you want to look for gold in any area outside of the [Designated Public] gold fossicking areas [All in the South Island BTW] you will need a mining permit – this includes on your own land, as gold is owned by the Crown’.

And then there’s DoC, whose staff all seem to believe that ALL gold mining on the Coromandel Peninsula is bad and that to even ask about it makes you an evil and bad person who is automatically against the environment! They have people everywhere, are definitely NOT helpful and because they believe they and ONLY they have the ABSOLUTE authority to ‘protect’ the environment, invariably make the lives of any perceived miscreant very unpleasant, with legal action always being a very distinct possibility.
Early in my involvement with mines on the ‘Peninsula, I was told by older, wiser, mining men’ that I should treat ALL Coromandel Peninsula land as being under Mining Lease, EVEN WHEN IT SEEMED TO BE TOTALLY UNUSED AND JUST GOING TO WASTE, with personal experience subsequently-gained, confirming that they were definitely correct! (Again, no details).
Although that advice was given some 50 years ago, I am advised that nothing has changed (And that indeed the rules and regulations have tightened up) and on the basis of all of the above, I would suggest that what you propose may not be one of the better ways to pass the time…

So much coverage on whether Chris Hipkins can survive this drama. Does his personal matter, does it not. That is the wrong question. It assumes Labour’s electoral fortunes are primarily a function of its leader’s personal credibility, and that framing tells us more about the limits of our political coverage than it does about the state of the left bloc. Whether Hipkins did or did not do something his ex-wife posted about on Facebook is immaterial.
Here is the structural version of Hipkins drama. The Left Bloc is running on fumes. Every public poll since 2023 tells the same story: Labour cannot govern without both the Greens and Te Pāti Māori. A list of policies is not a coalition or good campaign strategy. It leaves zero room for any of those relationships to deteriorate, any of those parties to have a bad campaign, or any of those numbers to move in the wrong direction on election night. Meanwhile, The Opportunity Party sits below the 5% threshold, with no electorate lifeboat. Every one of those votes disappears entirely. That is a structural hole no amount of leader resilience fills.
The question worth asking is why Labour has allowed that hole to persist. Labour has spent 30 years operating on a single strategic principle inherited from the first MMP election: never commit to a coalition partner before the votes are counted. Never signal. Never endorse. Keep every option open and let the numbers decide. That doctrine made some sense in 1996, when Winston Peters held the balance of power and chose National against most predictions. It has calcified into a systematic refusal to build the coalition architecture that MMP requires.
The clearest evidence that this is a chronic failure, not a current-cycle one, is what Peter Dunne published last month.

I’ll be interested in IAASB’s take on this but I reckon the reluctance to buy new machinery will have roots in the John Deere “right to repair” fiasco. In the high handed manner of all corporations who sense a dollar in the air JD made farmers & contractors have authorised servicemen work on their new equipment. They enforced this by denying access to codes & fitting software locks. As in most modern machinery the mechanical interfaces work just fine. It’s misfunctioning sensors & software glitches that destroy reliability.
The farmers in the States have had a gutsful & I’ve since read that John Deere have capitulated.
What the position is here in Godzone I know not but my best guess is that local cockys will be opting to repair their old tractors rather than be hung out to dry when the new tech crap fails mid harvest.

Deere has been forced in many states, especially the ag states, to open the door. There is something going on in Congress about this, as they’re not the only ones. Most of the cars and a lot of other gear is ending up the same. Same for the book you buy.

mate just got email from his bulk fuel supplier and diesel goin up 40c sunday night, was 55c last sunday and 39c the sunday before that, dang!!!. dunno what petrol price doing but farmers and contractors etc will be stocking up over the weekend again so expect pump chaos and empty bowsers esp rural areas.
