Former National minister Alfred Ngaro will stand as a candidate for New Zealand First in this year’s election, an announcement made ahead of Winston Peters’ State of the Nation speech.
However, it didn’t quite go to plan with some in the audience unaware who he was and Ngaro had to introduce himself following his short speech, after someone called out: “Who are you?”
Peters is also expected to announce an energy policy in his address.

IMO an AI ID should never be used to deprive ANYONE of their liberty without strong supporting evidence. It is not foolproof by any means.
Meanwhile, “better ten guilty men go free than an innocent be wrongfully imprisoned” seems apropos.
AI at the most should be seen as a tool, that should be properly harnessed.

We blame the police largely because it is they who act as sandpaper if we run against the law be it as victim or offender. Fifty years ago I thought of the police as overly prescriptive & dogmatic in their approach to prosecutions.
That attitude has been set on its arse & now, rather than evidence collectors, they act as prosecutors, judge & jury. This occurs because gutless politicians will not abolish crimes but rely on “police discretion” & “not in the public interest to prosecute” to water down the effects of outdated & unnecessary laws. It’s simple – either an action is illegal or it’s not illegal & the interpretation should be made in a court of law or parliament. Not on the side of the road by a sergeant who may or may not be in a particular mood.
From what we’ve got now the natural progression is to Mega-City One & the cubicles. NZ Police will morph into Judge Dredd characters empowered to summarily arrest, convict, sentence & execute criminals including those misidentified by AI.

At times it feels as if the system has drifted into a form of procedural overkill “Rolls-Roycing” the proof of relatively minor incidents while thousands of people sit immobilised in traffic.
Rolls-Roycing is something New Zealand does rather well. We see it in many areas of public administration: elaborate systems, complex processes and gold-plated solutions where a simpler approach might do.
And here Parliament cannot escape responsibility.
Other countries have changed their laws to allow quicker road clearance and faster incident management. Yet in New Zealand the legal framework and operational approach have remained largely unchanged for years.

Halter tipped for raise at $3.3 billion valuation, Kiwi fund details huge gains
Peter Thiel’s Founders Fund is investing in Halter at a US$2 billion ($3.3b) valuation, according to a Bloomberg report.
Meanwhile, long-time investor Icehouse Ventures has detailed the huge gains it has made over multiple investments, and put a timeline on Halter passing Fonterra in value.
Neither Founders Fund nor Halter would comment to the news agency or the Herald.
The Herald understands Halter will make an announcement in around two weeks’ time.
The Auckland-based maker of smart collars for cows – designed to support a “virtual fencing” system and monitor the animals – last raised funds in June 2025, when it brought in US$100 million at a US$1b valuation in a Series D round led by San Francisco-based Bond Capital.
His firm today employs around 350 staff and its systems manage more than 700,000 head of cattle.
Halter has recently expanded into the US, where huge Texas cattle ranches are among its targets, and into Australia, where now-updated animal welfare rules in some states have previously inhibited its progress.
(While Halter’s collars use electric pulses as one of their cues, Piggott says they deliver a tiny fraction of the charge of an electric fence. Halter’s product has been approved by the AgResearch Animal Ethics Committee, among other bodies.)

New Zealand First will be campaigning to split the big power gentailer companies up into separate generators and retailers.
NZ First leader Winston Peters made this announcement as part of his State of the Nation speech in Tauranga on Sunday, ahead of November’s election.
“We will be breaking up the power companies so they can no longer control both the power and the price,” Peters said.
“For decades now, New Zealanders and New Zealand businesses have been getting a raw deal when it comes to electricity. You’ve been paying far too much for power.”
The big four power generator-retailers are Meridian Energy, Contact Energy, Genesis Energy, and Mercury Energy.
Currently, the Government owns a 51% stake in Meridian, Genesis and Mercury. Contact is one of the country’s largest share market listed companies.
Peters said the current system was designed to make maximum profits for power companies, and everyday Kiwi families and businesses are the ones paying the price.
“Energy security is national security. It underpins everything – our households, our jobs, our industries, and our resilience as a nation.”
Peters said NZ First would deliver a National Energy Strategy.
“We’ll split the big power companies up into generators and retailers. The big four power companies control almost 90% of the electricity generation and then sell it back to themselves,” he said.
“That makes it very difficult for innovative and low-cost retailers to enter the market – which means prices stay high.
“Under the current system, the most expensive generator sets the price for all electricity – even electricity that costs peanuts to generate. It’s absurd.”
“We will replace the current system so that companies cannot hold back supply just to drive prices higher,” Peters said.
“We will guarantee long-term, fixed-price contracts for new-build generation projects, giving investors certainty. And we’ll guarantee their power will be first to be used.”
Peters said this would mean more power stations, more renewable energy, more competition and more resilience.
“And we’ll put power back into the hands of New Zealanders. If you generate power at home like solar, you should be able to sell it back to the grid at the same price you pay for it,” he said.
“It’s time to secure our electricity system for all New Zealanders.”
During his speech, Peters also talked about the economy, Fonterra, Air New Zealand, the Covid-19 inquiry, other political parties and the Indian Fair Trade Agreement.
At the event, it was also announced that former National minister Alfred Ngaro would be standing as a candidate for NZ First.
This energy policy announcement follows the party’s KiwiSaver proposal which would increase employee and employer contributions to 10% and make KiwiSaver compulsory. KiwiSavers and employers would receive tax cuts to cover the increases.
‘We will turn these current media polls into confetti’
The party has been performing strongly in polls – starting the year at 11.9% in the Taxpayers’ Union-Curia Poll and since then, sitting near 10% to 11%.
The latest March poll from Talbot Mills Research, prepared for corporate clients and obtained by Interest.co.nz, suggests support is sitting at 11% for NZ First.
On his party, Peters said: “Reflecting back, at this time before the last election, no one gave our party any chance of getting back to parliament.”
“Today we are here, and the question for the media is no longer – if we will get back, it’s ‘how many seats will we get?’.
“Well, we’ve got news for everyone, and this time it’s all good. We will turn these current media polls into confetti,” Peters said.
