For clarity, we will NOT be doing that, and the survey’s findings are rubbish. Here’s the statement my office provided to the journalist:
“A survey with methodology this poor is not even worth reporting on.
There are only about 220,000 licensed firearms owners in New Zealand, yet this survey purports to represent the views of more than 388,000 firearms owners. There is no credibility to these results and it raises serious questions about the methodology, including how the data was collected, weighted, and extrapolated.
It is also concerning that respondents appear to have been primed with leading statements before being asked for their views. This looks less like an attempt to measure genuine public sentiment and more like an attempt by a lobby group to manufacture a headline.
The Government is strengthening New Zealand’s firearm laws, including by introducing tougher penalties for those who break the law, banning gang members from holding firearm licences, and modernising the law to address emerging risks like 3D-printed weapons.
At the same time, we are making compliance easier for licensed firearm owners through sensible changes that reduce unnecessary regulatory burden without undermining public safety.
Our focus is where it should be – keeping firearms out of criminals’ hands, while respecting licenced owners.”

The house behind me is the house from the movie “Number Two”. I advocated for it to be retained amongst the new development as a reminder of our local history, but like so much else under this government, it’s been left to rot while people are in need of a place to live. A real symbol of their neglect. I will be fighting for Roskill to once again get homes built for local families.
