Twelve thousand children will be born with severe limb malformations before anyone in an official capacity acknowledges the problem. The families are told the drug was safe. The drug was approved. Both of these things remain true.
The year is 1972. Your doctor prescribes Valium. Britain is in the grip of a benzodiazepine wave that will last two decades. The dependency risk is known internally. It is not shared. Your doctor is not lying to you. He was not told either.
The year is 1999. Your doctor prescribes Vioxx for your arthritis. It is newer than ibuprofen, well-tolerated, and Merck has a study showing it works. Merck also has internal data suggesting it roughly doubles the risk of heart attack. This data will not reach your doctor for four more years. Fifty thousand people are estimated to have died in the interim. Merck eventually settles for 4.85 billion dollars. No criminal charges are brought.
The year is 2002. Your doctor prescribes OxyContin. Purdue Pharma trained its sales representatives to tell doctors the addiction risk was less than one percent. That figure came from a letter, not a study. The letter was about patients with terminal cancer on short-term doses in hospital settings. Your doctor is a GP with a patient who has a bad back. Nobody draws a distinction. Nobody is required to.
The year is 2008. Your doctor checks your cholesterol. Your LDL is elevated. You are prescribed a statin. Nobody mentions that the number needed to treat for primary prevention is approximately 250. Nobody mentions that the muscle deterioration you’ll notice over the next two years is listed as a rare side effect rather than a documented pattern affecting a meaningful percentage of patients. The trial that informed the prescription was funded by the manufacturer.
Now it is today.
Your doctor has new guidelines. New studies. New consensus.
He is confident.
He has always been confident.

Drug-checking services are seeing a “massive” increase in the number of people seeking advice about injecting steroids, peptides and weight-loss drugs as a new “grey market” grows in New Zealand.
New Zealand Drug Foundation principal science adviser Emily Hughes said, over the past 18 months, they had seen a surge in inquiries about these substances, but because people accessed their service anonymously, it was impossible to give exact numbers.
She said some of these new types of performance and image-enhancing drugs (PIEDs) were termed as falling within a “grey market” of drug use because the products are currently not regulated.
A desire for image-enhancing benefits is driving people to order drugs like peptides, human growth hormone and GLP-1 receptor agonist drugs used for weight-loss (such as Ozempic or Wegovy) from online storefronts.
New Zealand sporting body bosses earlier this week warned about the growing rise of young athletes and other Kiwi youth using banned performance-enhancing drugs. They include anabolic steroids, peptides and other stimulants.
Included is this statement.
The lack of regulation surrounding mail-to-order weight-loss drugs or non-anabolic steroids ordered from overseas meant they might not have undergone quality testing, and no doctors would be involved with the care or monitoring of a patient taking these substances.
“They’re being sold by online retailers that say they are lab certified but there’s no actual quality control like with an actual medicine that’s prescribed by your doctor,” she says.
“A big concern is not just that they could be the wrong peptide or the wrong steroid, but also that it could contain moulds or heavy metals or other things that might be dangerous to inject.”
While possibly right and well-intended, regulation and giving the medical clowns possession of the right to prescribe have well-known consequences.
A spokesperson for Customs said consumers were urged to check if a prescription was required before purchasing medicines from overseas.
“At the border, where a prescription medicine arrives without a valid prescription, Customs will refer the product to Medsafe for assessment, along with other medicines and therapeutic products.”
In December 2025, Medsafe reclassified a number of peptides as prescription medicines in New Zealand.

Treaty of Waitangi clause review: Government quietly agrees to amend, repeal provisions in laws
The Government has quietly agreed to repeal a number of references to the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi within laws, while amending others to be more specific.
Cabinet has also decided that, going forward, these provisions in legislation will reference both the Treaty of Waitangi and Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
Despite at least one decision being made at a Cabinet meeting on February 23, no one from within the Government has until now spoken publicly about the move or made any announcement.
Details are also still being withheld, with a statement from Justice Minister Paul Goldsmith to the Herald confirming the decisions but not outlining which legislation will have their Treaty principles’ references repealed.
The Herald learned of Cabinet’s decisions after discovering a memorandum filed by the Crown at the Waitangi Tribunal on March 12.

David Seymour, the Act Party leader and Cabinet minister, told the Herald the review was a “useful exercise” that his party supported, but it “does not remove the idea that there are Treaty principles”.
He said they remained “alive” in many areas of law, including the Treaty of Waitangi Act, which was excluded from this review.
“While we support this initiative, the underlying problem of what does the Treaty really mean in law has not been addressed.
“The ‘Treaty principle’ is still a legal term in New Zealand’s law books and what that means is no clearer than before after this exercise.”
