A ng/mL is a meaningless measure pulled out of a laboratory assistant’s arse which supposedly gains importance when preceded by a figure plucked from the magic tree. In the first three instances it is a test for intoxicating substances which would make a driver more likely to be involved in an accident.
In the case of marijuana residual THC is not necessarily causation as it only indicates prior use; not a time of use & it can stick around in a person’s body fat for weeks, long after the effects have worn off.
So smoke half a joint Friday night. Wake up totally clear headed on Saturday morning & lose your livelihood over a drug test on Monday.

Property developer Matthew Horncastle fires up after complaint over political billboard
Outspoken property developer Matthew Horncastle has taken aim at the advertising industry’s self-regulatory body after a complaint about a political billboard.
The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) received a complaint from a member of the public about a digital message displayed on a billboard owned by the Christchurch-based developer.
It read: “2026 Election. The New Zealand government takes HALF the money you make if you work really hard. Labour, Greens and Te Pati Māori want the other half as well. Approved by Matthew Horncastle”.
An email from the ASA’s complaints and education manager to Horncastle did not include the nature of the complaint or reveal the complainant.
“At this stage, no view has been formed, and the chair has not made any ruling. We are currently gathering further information to assist the chair in determining whether the complaint should proceed,” the ASA said.
By Friday afternoon, after referring the complaint to the Complaints Board chair, the ASA said a no-jurisdiction ruling had been issued.
“No further comment will be made regarding this matter,“ said ASA chief executive Hilary Souter.
The ruling matched Horncastle’s argument in response to the ASA’s original letter.
Horncastle posted the reply on his Facebook page.
“Thank you for your email. I have read it carefully. I want to make sure I have understood it correctly,” he wrote.
“The Advertising Standards Authority is not a government agency. It is a private organisation. It is funded by the advertising industry. It administers a voluntary system that its own members chose to join. I am not a member.”
The ASA describes itself as New Zealand’s advertising industry regulator and says advertising in New Zealand is self-regulated, funded through member subscriptions and advertiser and media levies.
Horncastle said he wanted to be “very clear” that his billboard was “not an advertisement”.
“There is no product. There is no service. There is no client. There is no campaign. Nothing is for sale. Nobody paid for it, and nobody was paid to place it.
“It is a private citizen stating a political opinion on a structure he owns. That is not advertising. That is speech.”
On its own website, the ASA outlines that its definition of advertising means “any message, the content of which is controlled directly or indirectly by the advertiser, expressed in any language and communicated in any medium with the intent to influence the choice, opinion or behaviour of those to whom it is addressed”.
“This is a broad definition, and it covers advertisements placed across a wide range of media platforms,” the ASA website reads.
Horncastle explained that his opinion is “protected by section 14 of the New Zealand Bill of Rights Act” then turned his attention to the authority itself.
“This reached me because someone disliked my opinion and you agreed to carry their complaint. So, I would like to understand the body that is now asking me to explain myself.
“Who funds you? Who sits on your board? And do opinions argued from the left receive the same letter, and the same scrutiny, that mine has just received?”
He went on to question the ASA’s political neutrality before stating that he “will be direct”.
“I do not report to a private organisation. I do not report to another private citizen. I do not answer to a club I never joined.
“I find it offensive that an unsolicited complaint can be turned into a letter asking me to account for my own opinion, on my own property, to people I never invited.
“Sit with that for a moment. A stranger disliked what I think, and here we are.
“If anything in this exchange is offensive, it is that. It is not a billboard about tax.”
Horncastle’s response concluded by declining the ASA’s request to provide a copy of the advertisement along with any relevant details about the placement and timing of the “campaign”.
“I am a free person in a free country. You are free to hold a view about my billboard. Anyone is.
“That is how freedom of expression works. You may write that view down. You may publish it. I will not stand in your way.
“You cannot compel me, and I will not be assisting you to do it.”
In a separate social media post, Horncastle mocked the complaint process by suggesting the formation of a new watchdog – “The Advertising Standards Authority Authority” to “assess the standards of the Advertising Standards Authority”.
He has since launched a parody website for the “ASAA”.
The billboard owned by Horncastle sits near the Moorhouse Ave overbridge (at Colombo St) on property that Williams Corporation developed on Bath St.
The billboard sits on a separate title, and Horncastle says a share of its profit is paid back to the property owners.
The businessman co-owns NZ Billboards with his Williams Corporation partner, Blair Chappell and Digital Simple Director, James Wallace.
