A person was reportedly stabbed at a Kainga Ora housing complex in central Auckland last night.
A police incident log showed emergency services were called to a “grievous assault” on Greys Ave at 10.45pm.
A resident of Kainga Ora’s Te Mātāwai supported living development, Angus Jowitt, said he heard a commotion in the complex about five minutes earlier.
“It’s not uncommon to have a disturbance in Greys Ave at this part of the week, Friday night, however, this one seemed to me to be particularly intense, so I stopped what I was doing and went out and had a look on the balcony. There was a couple of people kind of running around and screaming,” he said.
“You could clearly hear someone yelling ‘I’ve been stabbed, I’ve been stabbed, call the police’.
“It seemed very, very drastic, so I went downstairs.”
Jowitt said the complex was staffed 24-7 and he saw workers running outside with phones in hand.
He said his neighbours reported seeing a man stabbing another person on a balcony in one of the complex’s three buildings.
At least a dozen police officers and about four or five police cars, along with an ambulance, attended the scene, Jowitt said.

New Zealand to buy MH-60R helicopters, MK 54 torpedoes in $2.7b US dealThe United States has approved a US$1.5 billion sale of MH-60R helicopters and related equipment to New Zealand.
“The proposed sale will improve New Zealand’s capability to meet current and future warfare threats by providing greater security for its critical infrastructure,” the US State Department said.
“New Zealand will use the enhanced capability to strengthen its homeland defence,” it added.
The State Department said it had also approved a US$69m ($1.2b) sale of MK 54 torpedoes to New Zealand.
The State Department has notified Congress about the proposed sales, which still need to be approved by lawmakers.
The announcement follows comments from US Secretary of Defence Pete Hegseth that amounted to accusing New Zealand of “freeloading” during a speech at the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore last month.
NZ Ministry of Defence Chris Penk was there in person to hear Hegseth’s public criticism of New Zealand’s military spend – and other nations that spend less than 3.5% of GDP on defence.
“For those who continue to free-ride on the generosity of the American taxpayer, hear us now: those days are over. Allies that refuse to stand up and carry their weight for our collective defence will face a clear shift in how we do business,” Hegseth said.

New Zealand’s primary sector exporters say they are not surprised the United States is trying to increase and maintain import tariffs on foreign goods.
Most New Zealand exports already faced a 10% import tariff to the multibillion-dollar market.
But with that Section 122 tariff set to expire next month, a 12.5% tariff was being proposed to take its place.
American officials said the tariff was targeting countries, including New Zealand, that were not doing enough to prevent forced labour in the supply chain.
Kiwifruit will continue to be exempt from the new tariff, Zespri confirmed on Thursday, as well as beef, timber and offal.
But wine, for which the US is the top export market, is not exempt.
New Zealand Winegrowers chief executive Philip Gregan said changing tariffs made it very difficult for wine exporters to plan their shipments and market investment.
“We’re not entirely surprised that the US is looking to find another way to impose blanket tariffs across products,” he said.
“According to all reports, we’re looking at a 12.5% tariff on New Zealand wine going into the US, but we don’t know the timeframe for implementation, or in fact truly if it’s going to be implemented.
“But we presume it will be.”
Gregan said the US tariffs created a lot of uncertainty for the sector.
“There’s been this review going on. We all knew that in all likelihood it was going to lead to more permanent tariffs.”
Dairy, lamb to face new tariff
A new tariff was not unexpected by the dairy sector, already facing the 10% and likely to be subject to 12.5%.
Kimberly Crewther of the Dairy Companies Association of New Zealand said tariffs were never welcome.
“DCANZ agrees with the New Zealand Trade Minister’s [Todd McClay] assessment that this investigation has been aimed at maintaining tariffs in the US, and there has been no finding that forced labour is a feature of New Zealand dairy supply chains.”
She said it was concerned the new tariff proposal would again disadvantage New Zealand exporters over others sending product to the US.
“In particular, the tariffs will not apply to Canadian dairy products exported to the US under the USMCA agreement, meaning our unsubsidised exports are at a significant tariff disadvantage compared with unfairly priced Canadian dairy exports.”
New Zealand beef exports will continue to dodge the US import tariffs, but not lamb.
Beef and Lamb New Zealand chairwoman Kate Acland said lamb was expected to rise to 12.5% from the current 10%, though it was not likely to be immediate.
“Certainly we don’t think that this tariff is justified,” she said.
“We’re disappointed at the increase to 12.5%, but to be honest we were expecting it could have been worse.”
Acland said many countries were caught up in the situation, but it had nothing to do with New Zealand’s farming practices.
“This is not about New Zealand; this is part of a broader US trade strategy to put tariffs on imports.”
She assured there was no evidence of forced labour in the sector in New Zealand.

This meant they were the first to get dibs on new quota – but things became complicated when quota property rights changed from tonnes to a percentage of total allowable catch.
Taking this case, Te Ohu Kaimoana (the successor to the Waitangi Fisheries Commission) argued the change meant any new quota handed preferentially to Sanford diluted the quota held by other fishers, including iwi, who had received 10 percent of all quota in the 1992 Sealord Settlement.
When the West Coast snapper fishery catch allowance was reduced, Sanford, iwi-owned Moana NZ and local Taranaki company Egmont Seafoods all lost the same proportions of their quota.
But when the SNA8 allowance was increased by 300 tonnes in 2021, Sanford was awarded 271 tonnes of that. And it got about 576 of the 640 tonnes of new SNA8 quota issued by Fisheries Minister Shane Jones in 2024.
Justice Boldt declared that this appropriation without redress was a breach of the settlement – and by extension a breach of the Treaty of Waitangi.
