Our public servants are also being targeted and are no longer just being asked to implement political agendas. They are now being legally compelled to adopt spiritual and religious beliefs.
And nowhere is this more terrifying than in the New Zealand Army.
Human rights advocate Alex Penk recently uncovered that the Army issued General Orders forcing a specific “cosmological framework” onto our troops. The orders dictate that our soldiers must understand and align themselves with traditional Māori deities like Tūmatauenga (the god of war) and Rongo (the god of peace).
To climb the ranks, operational leaders are expected to recite karakia (prayers) from memory, and strategic leaders must actively “champion” this worldview.
When the advocacy group Ethos Alliance used the Official Information Act to ask the Army what consideration they gave to freedom of conscience, religion, and belief before issuing these orders, the official response was staggering: “The information does not exist.”
They didn’t even think about it. At no point did anyone in the Army hierarchy consider one of our most basic freedoms.
Worse still, these orders aren’t optional. They are backed by Section 39(b) of the Armed Forces Discipline Act 1971. In theory, a soldier who refuses to comply with these ‘spiritual’ orders on the grounds of a conflict with their own personal faith or conscience faces a charge of disobedience—an offence punishable by up to two years’ imprisonment.
Prominent King’s Counsel and friend of Hobson’s Pledge, Gary Judd, has rightfully sounded the alarm on this, pointing out that under the Bill of Rights Act, the crown has a strict negative duty not to interfere with freedom of conscience. It must remain completely neutral.
The state has absolutely no business putting a soldier in a position where they must choose between betraying their own conscience or risking a prison sentence.
Our soldiers swear an oath to serve King and Country. They do not sign up to have a state-mandated religion forced upon them as a condition of their employment or promotion.
This is exactly why our Professionals, not Politicians campaign is so vital.
When a government department or the military stops focusing on its core professional duty and starts acting as an agent of spiritual conversion or cultural compliance, democracy is in danger. If the crown can force religious frameworks onto the Army under threat of discipline, they can do it to our teachers, our nurses, and our police officers. As we know, it is already happening to real estate agents, lawyers, and others.

Two former Race Relations Commissioners are throwing their support behind police Superintendent Rakesh Naidoo, who is at the centre of a political feud after his selection as a Labour Party candidate.
One former commissioner, Joris de Bres, is concerned the police investigation to determine whether Naidoo shared sensitive information while being courted by Labour will damage police’s relationships with ethnic communities. He is also questioning whether the investigation is politically motivated.
Police Commissioner Richard Chambers told the Herald he acknowledged Naidoo’s “tremendous value” but insists a review is necessary.
Chambers revealed the investigation to the Herald on Tuesday and said there was no evidence from which he could confidently state Naidoo had shared information, but nor could he rule it out.
Naidoo, who is on preplanned leave, has not yet spoken publicly and has not responded to the Herald’s requests for comment.

Although it has caught fewer headlines, Gallagher’s eShepherd virtual fencing system has gained similar global traction to Auckland’s Halter.
“We launched in New Zealand around three years ago, and then into Australia, and two years ago into the US, and that market is growing very, very fast, and then also Europe,” says Sarah Adams, global strategy and new ventures manager for Gallagher Animal Management.
“We have a lot of customers in the southern part of Europe and now we’re rolling out into northern Europe and [the] UK,” Adams says.
“Around 3000 farmers in the last financial year started with eShepherd, and we are just growing by hundreds of farmers each month.”
In comparison, rival Halter recently said it had one million collars on cattle on more than 2000 farms.
Not late to the party
Gallagher isn’t a latecomer to the technology – it has just largely flown under the radar.
In 2016 (the same year Halter was founded), Gallagher took a cornerstone investment in Melbourne-based start-up Agersens, which claimed the eShepherd product it was developing was the world’s first virtual fencing technology.
Gallagher increased its stake over subsequent funding rounds before taking full control in 2021, when the product was still in a test phase on three New Zealand farms. No price was disclosed; Australian trade media put it at around A$40 million ($48.3m).
Different commercial approaches
Halter and eShepherd have a lot of crossover in features. Both have solar-powered, GPS-enabled smart collars that use a mix of cues to teach cattle to stay within virtual fences, smartphone apps and tools for tracking fertility and pasture management.

New Zealand’s broadcasting watchdog has upheld a complaint about an exchange between Newstalk ZB broadcasters Heather du Plessis-Allan and Barry Soper, in which Soper stumbled over the pronouns of non-binary former Greens MP Benjamin Doyle and at one stage referred to them as “it”.
In a decision released today, the Broadcasting Standards Authority (BSA) said Soper’s reference to “it” was “insensitive, disrespectful, and dehumanising”. The word classified a human being “as an object, animal or other non-human entity”.
The authority upheld the listener’s complaint on the grounds that the exchange had breached discrimination and denigration standards, despite station owner NZME’s earlier protest that the authority’s decision was “fundamentally flawed” on a legal basis.
NZME, which said Soper’s comments had been accidental and neither nasty nor malicious, has been ordered by the BSA to broadcast a pre-approved statement, outlining the findings.

We will submit a new split-gas emissions target based on science. Long-lived gases like carbon dioxide from coal burners should be treated differently from short-lived gases like methane from cow burps.
We will keep agriculture out of the Emissions Trading Scheme permanently.
And if the Paris Agreement cannot accommodate climate targets that reflect the science and New Zealand’s national interest, then New Zealand should leave it.
Climate policy should be based on facts, not ideology. It should not sacrifice the rural communities that feed the country and earn our way in the world.
ACT has been consistent from the start. We opposed the Zero Carbon Act when every other party backed it, and we’ll keep standing up for farmers now.

It’s been a year since we opened Te Ahu a Turanga: Manawatū Tararua Highway, the new four lane highway between Woodville and Ashhust.
On Wednesday 11 June 2025 we opened the new Manawatū Tararua Highway, seven years after the old route through the Manawatū Gorge was permanently closed.
Since then, there’s been nearly 3 million journeys on the new highway, showcasing how vital of a transport and freight link for the lower North Island, and how much safer, resilient, and efficient the new road is.
People are also taking advantage of the new shared path that runs along the entire length of the highway, and the series of recreational trails at the western end of the road.
Thats 8220 trips a day or around 4100 each way.
