STUFF: Doctor arrested at airport over $180,000 student loan debt
Vic* was at Wellington Airport last month, heading home to Australia – where he has lived and worked as a medical specialist for three decades – when three police officers approached.
He was arrested, spent three nights in custody, and at a court hearing, had his passport confiscated. He’s still here, a month later, unable to work.
Vic hadn’t committed a criminal offence – but he owed, IRD calculated, student loan arrears of almost $180,000. He was just the 13th person arrested at the border in the last decade for student loan debts.
Vic’s brother, Bob*, has an even bigger bill, about $310,000, a debt he says he’ll be paying off until he dies, unless he can negotiate a reduced deal.
The brothers came home to care for an ailing father, and Bob is worried he too will be stopped on departure.
They accept they owe the money and should have responded to IRD’s repeated attempts to contact them – but say it’s only been in recent years they realised how much they owed…
Almost 70% of those OBBs are in arrears – and about 24,000 of them have debts older than 15 years, with no repayment plan….
One reason why OBBs build up such mammoth arrears is because while onshore Kiwis don’t pay interest on their loans, once someone’s been offshore for 182 days, the government charges 5.6% interest.
And for those in arrears, another 9.6% in penalties is added – which means Vic and Bob are paying over 15% on their debts. The brothers say they actually only borrowed about $60,000 between them in the early 1990s. By Vic’s maths, his debt has gone up 800%

Students are not special. Like any debt anyone takes on it is theirs to pay back.
My daughter (working in British Columbia as a registered vet) is paying off her 5-figure, interest-gaining Massey university student loan. It was interest-free when she worked in NZ, but in Canada, she earns significantly more for fewer hours (although they have fewer statutory vacation days in Canada).
Compounding interest on a loan is like the gravity well of a black hole. Once you cross the fiscal event horizon, you are doomed.
I raised her with the expectation that she would earn a useful degree and then go out into the world to seek her fortune. I don’t know if she will return to New Zealand. Maybe after she retires. I will not be around by then.

We all go through situations that we would regret or were not as they would seem to be to others.
There are plenty of regrets in life, and people’s minds have a perhaps regrettable feature that, over time, the truth or your part in it becomes distorted according to what you feed your mind.
That’s why justice in courts should not take forever, as the mind alters its memories of events, so witnesses become unreliable.
How can we be protected from this?
Well, that’s an interesting answer, and one some won’t like much.
The ubiquitous use of cameras in one’s personal life and in public spaces may well be our best protection from false narratives.
Provided, however, that filming is kept safe away from those who would like to control it.
One of my staff had a vehicle accident, and despite the city camera’s recording it all, the police decided he was in the wrong, which he wasn’t, but the police would not release the pics we wanted. We were told a pic taken a second or so after the ones we had were distorted.
That was a lie, of course.
That policewoman protecting another mad woman from the same suburb was wrong, and this is what needs guarding against: Patch protection.
Make it illegal to withhold this information and not at the whim of some police person.
It is inevitable that such things happen here eventually. I don’t know what the rate of Muslim immigration to New Zealand is but we certainly don’t seem to be doing anything to discourage it do we?

Unfortunately, DoC has degenerated into a power-hungry ‘green’-dominated autocracy with absolutely NO tolerance for anyone who dares to oppose it or asks ‘Why’? They have their own (At times very ignorant) ‘Experts’ who parrot and toe the party line and interpret things to the Department’s advantage, a situation which makes any attempt at negotiating with them incredibly frustrating and expensive, with the operating philosophy seeming to be one of ‘Rules for THEE, but NEVER for me’.

the wine industry hardly even pays min wage, lots of shady dark skinned contractors running what is essentially slave gangs. on paper theyre paid min wage but the money gets funneled “home” and into the slave owners account.
my old employee went to marlborough to a vineyard back in 2018, he said the migrant workers paid tens of thousands to get jobs there through the clack bunt contractors they used at harvest time. its all a fucking rort and massive exploitation scheme throughout horticulure/viticulure industry… then the same shit gets used in construction, bottle stores and dodgy indian owned farms etc

#. Coromandel Harbour which is so contaminated with arsenic from previous gold mining that the channels can’t be dredged & kept open in case the toxin gets stirred up.
#. DoC is spending $2 million pa since 1987 to remediate previous gold producing sites & are only scratching the surface of the problem.
