You know, I was watching that scene in Citizen Vigilante, and something absolutely incredible struck me. I’m not an overly sensitive person, but even I didn’t bat an eye when the hero took them out. Why? Because it was a situation that crossed every boundary. You see Yusuf’s family and friends—this guy committed an atrocious crime, and they shamelessly stand by him like a wall. They hide behind some kind of religious fanaticism, talking about principles, about dress codes, making the victim guilty and the rapist untouchable.
And at that moment, in steps this guy who just shatters their whole sense of self-assurance and ideological facade. You’ll feel pure, deep satisfaction and relief then, because those people thought their culture or religion gave them immunity for doing evil. It wasn’t blind violence—it was the moment when ruthless truth and punishment reached the accomplices, who had shamelessly covered for their kin. In the face of hypocrisy like that, a person completely severs any compassion and feels that the only right thing happened.

We’re all familiar with the adage of the cure being worse than the disease. What about when unnecessary tests cause the disease that requires the the cure? Cabinet Minister Nicole McKee has been chosen by the ACT caucus as the party’s new deputy leader, succeeding Brooke van Velden.
The announcement was made on Sunday at ACT’s annual general meeting and campaign rally at Shed 10 in Auckland.
Van Velden announced in March she would retire from politics at November’s election after serving six years as ACT’s deputy leader. She will remain a minister until the election, with the party confirming McKee as her successor at Sunday’s AGM.
McKee said she was “deeply grateful” for the caucus’s support.
“The ACT Caucus has placed its trust in me, and I am deeply grateful. Together, we are focused on locking Labour out so we can unlock New Zealand’s potential.”
McKee said she never expected to become a politician, let alone a Cabinet minister and deputy leader.
“I never really saw myself becoming a politician… Now I’m a Cabinet Minister and Deputy Leader of the only party that has the courage and the principles to unlock New Zealand’s potential.”
She said she entered politics following the firearms law changes introduced after the March 15, 2019, mosque attacks because she believed licensed firearms owners had been treated unfairly.
McKee said rewriting the Arms Act remained one of her key priorities, saying she wanted firearms laws that improved public safety while treating licensed firearms owners fairly.
She also pointed to work she has led in Government, including reforms to anti-money laundering laws, the courts, alcohol laws, overseas adoption laws and the return of the Three Strikes sentencing regime.
ACT leader David Seymour said McKee had earned the confidence of her colleagues and was the right person to take on the role.
“Nicole has earned the respect and confidence of her colleagues and is the perfect choice for Deputy Leader.”
Seymour said McKee had “proven herself as a Minister who fixes what matters and stands up for the little guy”.
He also thanked Van Velden for her six years as deputy leader, saying he was grateful for her support and looked forward to working alongside McKee in the role.
The leadership announcement came as ACT outlined campaign priorities including reducing the size of government, cutting regulation and what Seymour described as “unlocking New Zealand’s potential”.

ACT campaigning to halve number of Government departments, and limit Jobseekers’ spending
David Seymour returned to well trodden campaign grounds for his ACT Party, focusing on cutting Wellington’s bureaucracy and limiting what beneficiaries can spend money on.
Seymour outlined two campaign pledges at the party’s election-year conference at Shed 10 on Auckland’s waterfront.
ACT plan to merge, or close, more than half of the government departments
Seymour has a long-standing position that there were too many Government departments and ministers, but hasn’t recently said which ones he would get rid off.
n Sunday, he told supporters there should be just 19 departments – down from the current 43. and he said there should only be 18 ministers, down from 28.
And in this coalition, there are 112 ministerial titles. That includes about a dozen titles responsible for the primary industries.
Seymour said the proposal was aimed at simplifying the structure of government and reducing bureaucracy.
“New Zealand needs a smaller, more efficient government if we are going to balance the books, lift wages, restore trust in democracy, and unlock New Zealand’s potential,”
Each department would report to a single minister responsible for its budget and outcomes, replacing the current system where some departments report to multiple ministers.
ACT’s proposal would remove the Public Service Commission and instead allow ministers to appoint departmental chief executives on fixed-term contracts.
Chief executives could be removed for specified reasons, including non-performance or policy misalignment, while retaining public service employment protections and the right to return to a lower-classified role.
The proposal says agencies that require operational independence, including Police, the New Zealand Security Intelligence Service and the New Zealand Defence Force, would continue to have those protections provided by law.
Seymour said New Zealand’s current structure had become overly complex.
“New Zealand has 78 ministerial portfolios, 28 ministers, and 43 departments. Norway has a similar population and runs with 20 ministers across 17 ministries.”
He argued that overlapping ministerial responsibilities and departments made government less accountable and more costly.
ACT wants more limits on what Jobskeers can buy
Seymour also pledged to install more controls on how Jobseekers could spend their money.
He said anyone who stayed on the Jobseker work-ready benefit for more than four months should have their benefit paid onto a Government-run money management card, which would limit how they could spend their income.
If you are on a work-ready benefit for more than four months, you get your rent or mortgage paid and a plastic card that only works on staple items.
Those cards could not be used to withdraw cash or buy alcohol.
He also said that everyone on a health-related benefit should be seen by an MSD-approved doctor for assessment.
Health-related welfare is one of the fastest-growing pressure points in the system. In ten years the number of New Zealanders on a health or disability Jobseeker benefit has nearly doubled, to 96,852. Another 96,000 are on the Supported Living Payment. Most of the growth is from new claims for psychological or psychiatric conditions,” he said.
ACT had campaigned on many of these policies in 2023. Since coming to Government, Seymour said some work had already been doing towards streamlining the public service and changing how benefits were managed – but he said that work was “half done”.

They will need to attack the current ACC system and the way in which the medical system has arranged things to make themselves rich.
There are something like 14 new medical establishments being built or expanded in Auckland alone. All because of the gravy chain that the medical system gets funded by.

I’m not sure I love the idea of essentially treating people like kids because they’re unemployed. Sure, for some it’s a lifestyle, but many are victims of the kinds of policies that ACT supports, e.g. the unbelievably fucked NOT FTA with India.
I know of two women who are both eminently capable and qualified, but have turned 60. Both have now been unemployed for over 1.5 years despite assiduously applying for work.
So fucking Seymour would have them treated like bludgers? Fuck him.

Over the past few years, central banks have been quietly buying up significant quantities of gold.
As the trend has accelerated, official agencies now hold the highest quantity of gold since 1975 – more than 36,000 tonnes of the precious metal.
Central bank buying of gold picked up after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022. The World Gold Council says central banks have bought an average of 1,000 tonnes a year over the past four years – double the average of the previous decade. It’s one factor behind the surge in the gold price last year.
The council also noted a record 45% of central banks surveyed expect to increase their holdings over the next year.
Financial sanctions are punitive measures designed to restrict or limit a country’s access to money, financial services or global markets. Governments use sanctions to put pressure on a country and influence its behaviour.
Research suggests the increasing use of financial sanctions by the United States, the European Union and other governments is behind the accelerated move into gold by emerging market economies.
Following financial sanctions imposed on Russia after it annexed Crimea in 2014, the Russian central bank accelerated gold purchases and, since 2014, has bought more gold than any other nation.
Russia’s exclusion from the international payments system SWIFT in 2022 and the freezing of around US$300 billion of its central bank’s foreign assets led to a further rise in gold purchases by several emerging market and developing economies, especially in China, Turkey and India.
The recent survey of central banks by the World Gold Council also highlighted concerns about sanctions. Around 37% of emerging market and developing economies’ central banks reported “concerns about sanctions” or the “anticipation of changes in the international monetary system” as factors behind their decision to hold gold.
Given Trump’s changes to the Fed and his long-held view that the US dollar should be anchored to gold, will he trash the Fed?

NZ sold most of its gold reserves in the 1960’s supposedly because liquid foreign currency assets served it better. Some of us, less credulous when it comes to government speak, note that the timing coincided with the UK joining the ECC.
Either way we have no gold reserves. The last were sold in 1991.

Investigations have been launched this month over Immigration NZ’s failed Biometric Capability Update (BCU) project. Launched in 2018 without Cabinet approval, it misled ministers and has needed $31 million from this year’s Budget to end it.
Since then, the question of whether officials misled a select committee in March – by failing to disclose the programme had been axed – has been referred to Parliament’s Privileges Committee, RNZ reported. In essence a serious move reflecting the gravity of the situation.
How can you trust your officials? Immigration Minister Erica Stanford was asked.
“It is very difficult to trust officials when they are deliberately withholding information from you and providing misleading information,” she said.
