Happened to be researching that last weekend. Got a few in my family. Had a customer last week wth the bluest of eyes, so looked it up. Just to be different, my Mum had green eyes and red hair, as did her mum.

The Government has conceded that a promise in the coalition agreement between the National Party and Act will not be met this term.
In fact, it seems doubtful the commitment, which is to repeal the Canterbury Regional Council (Ngāi Tahu Representation) Act 2022, can be met at all. The law allows Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu to directly appoint up to two people to ECan, the Canterbury Regional Council.
Instead, members of the Government have told the Herald they will achieve the broader aim of that promise by following through on plans to abolish all regional councillors, including the two provided for by this particular law, by 2028.
In a statement to the Herald, Local Government Minister Simon Watts said “our Government is progressing its Simplifying Local Government programme, which is focused on improving the effectiveness, efficiency and accountability of local government”.
“The Government does not intend for there to be regional council elections in 2028 and will make final decisions on regional level governance in 2027,” he said.
All three coalition parties voted against the law when it was first introduced and have said they wish to repeal it. However, thanks to a parliamentary quirk, they cannot do so.
Labour Party MP Rino Tirikatene introduced the law.
The law is a local act, which is a type of law that is requested by a local authority and, despite being passed by the national-level Parliament, only applies to the area stipulated in the law.
A local act must be “promoted” or requested by the local authority to which it applies, which is ECan in this case. A repeal bill must also be “promoted” by the local authority – the Government, even if it has the numbers in the House, cannot introduce a local bill without it being requested by the local authority.
In this case, ECan does not want the law repealed, meaning the coalition is powerless to repeal it. It has to wait until the broader, sweeping reforms of local government.
Canterbury Regional Council chair Dr Deon Swiggs confirmed to the Herald that the council had not changed its view on the bill and would not be requesting a local bill to repeal it.
“Environment Canterbury has not requested the repeal of the Canterbury Regional Council (Ngāi Tahu Representation) Act 2022, and our position on this remains unchanged,” Swiggs said in a statement.
“It’s worth noting, the Government has signalled its intention to remove appointed iwi representation from regional councils from 2028,” he said.
Watts told the Herald the Government had actually asked ECan to consider promoting a local bill to repeal the act, “however, the council chose not to do so”.
Without this, the Government is stuck.
“The Canterbury Regional Council (Ngāi Tahu Representation) Act 2022 is a local act. Any repeal or amendment of that Act would require another local bill to be introduced and passed by Parliament,” Watts said.
Act leader David Seymour said he remained “committed to removing unelected appointees with voting powers at ECan”.

Gib have been 20 years behind the rest of the world since forever, both with their board and the plastering products, just catching up now.
They insist you use only Gib branded plaster products or you won’t get any help from them if it all turns to shit.
Because they know stuff like Hamiltons and US brands are far superior, cheaper, and available here, lots of tradies use them, got to keep that monopoly don’t they.
A few years ago a new plaster tape arrived here, fibre fuse from the US, shits all over the tape Gib had.
So they said you can’t use it because it’s not tested.
One year later, they come out with their own fibre fuse, identical but dyed yellow, gib rock tape they call it, fine to use that they said.
Heads up for you, their so called guarantee is utterly worthless, if there is a problem of any kind they are out the door faster than a whippet with a bum full of dynamite.
Ready to nail? Nails haven’t been used to fix plasterboard since the 1980s and won’t be making a comeback anytime soon.

Given that the new plant is the best in the Southern Hemisphere and that even after COVID no one could bring in cheaper gib, what you charge your customers must be a premium.
Now, in saying all that, I’m not that fussed on Gib as a product compared to the old Gib, which I started using when there was a Gib plant in the Hutt Valley. I have houses with the old Gib board, and it’s a lot tougher; the natives don’t like punching it nor banging their heads on it.
And then of course there is the issue of customers, and frankly there are a % all the time that businesses don’t want.
Everyone has them. We fire them as they are far too much hard work, and we would rather someone else had them. It’s the best thing you can do some days.
And you would have to say that GIB certainly had their customers sorted; they had all the engineering information and made sure all the architects and councils had all the information.
Who would you go to? Someone with all the right details or an importer that had no backup, and no engineering details. We have seen the results of that bullshit with Hardies and stupid builders who couldn’t read or do as they were supposed to.

Back in the 90s CSR who make most of the plasterboard in OZ had a plan to take on Gib in NZ, so Fletchers went to them and said, we will buy all the paper for our Gib from CSR if you guys stay out of NZ so we keep our monopoly.
Deal done, all paper used in Gib Manufacturing comes from CSR to this day.
Then the bastards wormed their way into BRANZ and worked with them to develop a new bracing schedule for new homes, with the word Gib inserted at every opportunity.
Bracing elements were named Gib Standard 1, GS 2, GS 3 etc, still in use today
Problem came when thick as pigshit Jacinda and her equally thick mates closed the Auckland Gib factory repeatedly for lockdowns, because it was considered Non Essential.
Then came the Gib crisis, want a single sheet? Order it six months in advance, whole houses sat unfinished for six months or more because they couldn’t get any Gib to finish them.
There were other alternatives, BUT because the word Gib had been written into the building code (GS1, GS 2 etc) you could not use them or you would not get a code of compliance because you didn’t use the specified product.
This is why the new Government changed the law so you can use other products as long as they were properly tested overseas.

Ok they have increased the unit charges but it where the “lines” company part that has added it on.
I have used a private “lines” company, which is made up from older semi retired linesmen, to up grade the final poles on my part, & the difference is striking.
And they know the tricks, how to work around the time consuming expensive ‘ealth & ‘afety’.
Working in with you, like having a tractor just lean its front end loader to brace the pole, while they go up the ladder on the other side. 😁

I saw on some Utube that the Amish had a system going solar, that worked out for a start, matching a solar panel, to the battery, required then to an inverter.
There first point was like running a fridge.
Then just repeat for running a deep freeze.

So it was all individualized for the necessary appliances or systems & did not need an electrician.
A nearby dairyfarm has a back up tractor generator, an essential for power cuts so as to get the cows milked.
Funnily enough, it has been lent out to a number of other dairy farms.
One of the issues is to set up so the solar panel can be gently cleaned now & again.
I have re roofed the century old house, and though it was mentioned about putting on solar panels; but just to clean the gutters, which when younger I used to cruise the roof, but certainly not these days.

I know some states send bills out every quarter so for some their bill might seem high but are probably still lower than your monthly bills.
yup, the workshop, shed, 2x dongas and cooks house is 3.5-4k per quarter. boss house is solar, he rekons all the farms will be solar soon as the lines companies will force it due to high costs and resources doing repairs after fire rips through.

We have underfloor heating ( water pipes heat pump system). Gone up $160.00! Around $500 last year. We’re with Powershop and I buy every discount pack through out the year. I looked at last week’s power. Cost me $167 for 7 days. I did 2 washing loads on off peak rate. Didn’t bake at all. Shower is under 5 minutes. More like 2 minutes for me. Even cooked Sunday roast before 5 pm and left it in oven. We only heat living area and bedroom. ( it is quite a big living area). Just two of us.
last 2 months my power bills have only been a note or 2 off 1k ffs, i looked at our usage and its less then this time last year but the discounts are gone, line charges and kwh price have gone up.
mrs sb uses the drier lots this time of year plus dehumidifier 24/7 etc. our hotwater is a big cost… but a nice new heatpump hotwater cylinder is going in next month aswell. august is gunna hammer stupid boys bank account!

quite a few PE firms are now restricting how much money shareholders can withdraw, their money is essentially locked in for the ride and could potentially lose a fucking shit ton in the process.

National’s Curriculum Backflip: Treaty Removed—Then Quietly Put Back
These documents expose yet another National Government retreat.
Officials prepared a curriculum framework focused on one clear objective: delivering the same high academic standards to every child, regardless of background or location. The Treaty of Waitangi was not included as an overarching principle.
Erica Stanford signed that version on 30 April 2024—but barely a month later, Cabinet restored references to Te Tiriti and New Zealand’s “bicultural foundations.”
The issue isn’t whether children should learn New Zealand history or understand the Treaty. They should. The issue is whether the Treaty should sit above the entire curriculum as a guiding political principle, rather than being taught properly within history and social studies.
National had an opportunity to put literacy, numeracy, knowledge and equal educational expectations firmly at the centre. Instead, it backed away and returned to politically loaded language that risks distracting from the fundamental purpose of schooling.
Once again, voters are left asking: What does this Government genuinely believe—and why does it keep retreating whenever pressure arrives?
After teaching in NZ for 30 years, I have come to the conclusion that our education sytem is fucked. The way they teach maths is an abomination. Kids in yr 9 write as if they have just picked up a pencil at age 5. Its Treaty this, Maori that, and fuck all else until they hit yr 11 and some reasonable challenging material is presented. By that stage most of the pigment enhanced have dropped out except for the Indians. The Chinese kids are doing Yr 13 stuff in Yr 11. But the scholarships are for the special people, White straight males, fuck off to the end of the queue. Quite simply, we are producing ignorant retards. ( except for the Chinese and Indians that are excelling, mostly becuase they work hard despite the best efforts of woke, lefty teachers trying to sabotage education).
