Many years back met a gentleman from Vancouver who was an Inuit and lived on Vancouver Island. He had been the conservation minister in the Vancouver govt. Why sacking Nash was not the obvious option for NZ First – Heather du Plessis-Allan
It is weird that NZ First sacked Stuart Nash this week.
Let’s first establish that it was a sacking, not a resignation. Nash is not a happy man. He feels unfairly treated.
He may have a point.
He called his Napier rival Katie Nimmon “lazy”. Hardly the worst thing anyone’s said about a political rival. He suggested she took too much maternity leave away from Parliament. A fair opinion to hold. Jacinda Ardern took six weeks. Julie-Anne Genter took 12 weeks for the birth of her first child. Nimmon took 24-plus.
An electorate MP is not a normal job. There is no replacement advocating for Napier when the MP is absent. For six months her voters did not have her advocacy.
As her employers we are entitled to discuss the length of her, and future MPs’, leave.
Nash’s lingering resentment over his punishment is not the sentiment of a man who willingly resigned. It is the sentiment of a man given the ultimatum of resign or be sacked.
So, let’s call it for what it really is. It’s a sacking.
It’s weird because it was not the most obvious option for NZ First.
This is a party that has built much of its appeal on being a bulwark against what its leader calls the “snivelling wokesters”. It is a party that constantly rails against the mainstream media.
The most obvious option, then, when the snivelling wokesters and mainstream media melted down and came for their man was actually to give them the middle finger and defend Nash’s right to say what he likes.
The most obvious option was not to cave within less than 12 hours.
That Winston Peters chose that option was a surprise. Especially when he has in recent weeks defended Shane Jones referring to Indian migrants as a “butter chicken tsunami”. Especially when he has in recent days defended Jones making an oral sex reference about the Prime Minister’s enthusiasm for the visiting Indian PM.
But the mathematics didn’t stack up for Nash.
There are many times more women voters than Indian voters in NZ. Nash was already on his last chance for his crude description of what a woman is and his aggro texts to the Trade Minister. And NZ First now has two heirs-apparent: Michael Laws and Jones. Nash is at best surplus to requirements and at worst a threat that allowed itself to be eliminated.
And so, he was eliminated. The political risk his comments created was nuked. But that move carries some political risk too. Peters’ near-instant capitulation must shake the faith of those anti-woke voters drawn to him as their defender. Not much of a defender, it turns out, when it doesn’t suit him.
National’s overreaction to the comments also carries some risk. It must be remembered that it is ultimately National that orchestrated Nash’s demise.
It was former National minister Chris Finlayson who revealed Nash’s private text on his personal podcast. It was National which then went ballistic about it, rolling out its big guns to declare what a sexist Nash was.
Each made a point of sounding more outraged than the other. (And they photoshopped all their MPs into a cuddle pic witht her. (my words).)
National also has a problem with women voters. And so, National went extra hard battling on behalf of the sisterhood.
But the risk is that not all National voters necessarily love the idea of a gig worker like an MP spending more than six months of a three-year contract away from the office.
And the greater risk is that not all of their voters love National cosplaying the culture war warrior.
Perhaps it is the nervous energy of a close-run election causing everyone to lose their bearings, but this has been a bizarre performance for everyone involved.

Labour leader Chris Hipkins called Nash’s comments “sexist and wrong”.
“He has once again highlighted why I was right to remove him from Cabinet. He does not have the judgment or temperament to be a Minister. It is an indictment on both Winston Peters and Christopher Luxon that up until yesterday they thought he did.

THE GAME HAS CHANGED: Dynacom, War Risk, and the Death of the “Safe Route” Through Hormuz
Two nights ago, two tankers belonging to the Greek company Dynacom — the Kavomaleas and the Acheloos — were struck by Iranian fire as they hugged the Omani coast, trying to slip through the Strait of Hormuz under cover of darkness. They were the only two vessels that attempted the crossing that night. Both were hit. One, carrying over 500,000 barrels of oil, has reportedly been left drifting in Iranian waters with its crew forced to abandon ship. The other was carrying two million barrels.
I know Dynacom well. In 2001, I was lead counsel for the Dynacom shipowners and their P&I club — The North of England P&I club — in a 26-day trial in the Singapore High Court, in a case that is widely known as The “Cherry”, after the lead vessel which was arrested in Singapore. It is the most famous shipping trial in Singapore’s legal history. I remember that trial vividly, not least because 9/11 happened while we were in the middle of it. On the opening day of the trial, Singapore’s Chief Justice, Yong Pung How, came in to watch the proceedings, accompanied by a distinguished English visitor — Lord Bingham, formerly Master of the Rolls, Lord Chief Justice and by then a Law Lord.
I have visited George Procopiou many times at Dynacom’s headquarters in Glyfada, the old shipowning quarter south of Athens where the Niarchos and Onassis families once kept their homes too. When I knew him, his fleet was around 60 vessels. Today it is well over 200. Prokopiou has built that fortune by doing what almost no one else in shipping is willing to do: sail into the fire when everyone else pulls back.
That is exactly what makes this attack so significant.Procopiou is not a nervous operator. He was the shipowner the US establishment quietly leaned on to keep tankers moving through Hormuz when the rest of the market froze. If Iran can hit his ships — twice, on the same night, on the supposedly safer Omani route — no amount of American assurance about “air cover” will get cautious owners back into that strait.
This is the real story behind the story. It is not really about two tankers. It is about the price of risk. War risk premiums were already climbing before this. They are about to become prohibitive — if cover is even offered at all. Brent has already broken $100 a barrel on the back of this. Washington can deploy all the F-16s and F-35s it wants; it cannot underwrite a shipowner’s judgment about whether his crew comes home.
The Legitimacy Principle applies here too, in its own way — Iran does not need to close Hormuz. It only needs to make the insurance market decide the strait is closed for it.

Act is proposing to increase the Government’s medicines budget as a proportion of overall health spending with the hope of eventually achieving parity with Australia’s current spending.
The election policy, announced today in Auckland, proposed to increase the proportion of spending on medicines within the Government’s total health budget by 1 percentage point annually to 2033.
The policy used a 2025 report from the New Zealand Institute of Economic Research, which assessed New Zealand’s total pharmaceutical expenditure at 4.9% of health spending. It was the smallest proportion of the 13 countries included, less than half of Australia’s 12.2% and the 13.3% average among countries surveyed.
Under Act’s plan, medicines spending in Budget 2027 would increase to 6% of an estimated health expenditure between $33.4 billion and $36.6 billion. That would come to between $2b-$2.2b; an increase of $200m-$400m in medicines spending.
The medicines budget would increase by 1 percentage point each year until it reached 12% or $5.4b-$6.1b of an estimated $44.9b-$51b health budget in 2033-34.

The National Party has promised to gradually extend paid parental leave from 26 to 30 weeks by 2029 if re-elected.
The change would begin with an increase to 27 weeks in next year’s Budget and followed by further increases in the next two Budgets.
The party announced the promise on Sunday morning.
Finance spokeswoman Nicola Willis said the policy was “about better supporting working mums and dads as they do the vital work of raising children”.
“National wants strong families, supported to give their kids the best start in life. Our modernisation of paid parental leave will support families by giving them more financial breathing space when they take on caregiving responsibilities.
“The birth of a child is an expensive time, as families juggle the costs that come with a new baby while their household income is less than when both parents are in paid work,” Willis said.
The party also promised it would give parents the option of taking some or all of their paid parental leave at the same time, in any order or combination up to the full entitlement.
The announcement came days after NZ First candidate Stuart Nash resigned his candidacy after calling National MP Katie Nimon lazy for taking leave after having a baby.
MPs do not get paid parental leave and Nimon disputed Nash’s characterisation of the length of time she spent away from Parliament.
Nimon was present at the National Party’s announcement of its policy. She said Nash had called her on Thursday night to apologise for his remarks.
National costed the policy at $327 million over the four-year forecast period. It will pay for the policy by digging into future Budget allowances, the pool of money set aside for funding cost pressures and new policies.
The first increase will cost $27m in next year’s Budget.
Paid parental leave is currently capped at $811 a week. Willis said the Government had increased the cap each year.
Willis said the cost of paid parental leave falls on the Government and not employers.
She described the funding as a “dividend” paid to New Zealanders for the Government’s efforts to restore fiscal sustainability — although Treasury expects budget deficits to persist until the end of the decade by the traditional measurement.
Willis said National had many parents with young children in its caucus and paid parental leave was a priority for them — she said the party would have announced this policy regardless of Nash’s comments about Nimon turning into a controversy.
“We have lots of young parents in our caucus,” Willis said.
“Those values are reflected in the policy priorities of our caucus,” she said.
National leader Christopher Luxon denied the announcement had been brought forward to coincide with the Nash controversy.
“The reality is this was always our plan,” he said.
Willis and women’s spokeswoman Nicola Grigg said the party will “protect changes” in the new Employment Leave Act, so that parents receive full holiday pay when taking annual leave after returning to work.
Annual leave is currently paid based on average weekly earnings over the previous 12 months, meaning a parent who takes a holiday soon after returning to work from paid parental leave can receive reduced holiday pay.
“Extending paid parental leave to 30 weeks will ease that pressure and give more parents the option to stay home with their baby for longer.
“This is part of National’s longer-term vision to eventually extend paid parental leave to 40 weeks, equivalent to around nine months.
“Gradually increasing paid parental leave over three Budgets means this policy can be funded responsibly, consistent with National’s plan to return the books to surplus and reduce government debt,” Willis said.
Grigg said the changes would give “more mums the option to stay home longer, giving them more time to recover and return to work with confidence”.
“Some mums might need extra help from their partner after a difficult birth and allowing parents to take paid parental leave together means their partner can be home while they recover,” Grigg said.
At the last election, National campaigned on a similar policy of making paid parental leave more flexible, but it had not delivered the promise in government.
Willis said the party had been unable to get the policy included in coalition agreements and that ministerial responsibility for paid parental leave sat with the Act Party’s Brooke van Velden.
“She didn’t prioritise that change in her work programme,” Willis said. “I think it is a shame that it wasn’t prioritised in the work programme this term.”
Willis said National would prioritise the change if elected for a second term.

PILLAR is strongly opposing renewed calls to introduce hate speech laws in New Zealand, saying the proposals are nothing more than a modern attempt to reintroduce blasphemy laws under a different name.
Federation of Islamic Associations of New Zealand (FIANZ) chair Abdul Razzaq has again called for hate speech legislation, proposing definitions that would prohibit speech deemed to “vilify or promote hostility” towards individuals or communities based on their religion.
PILLAR Executive Director and spokesperson Nathan Seiuli said New Zealanders should recognise exactly what is being proposed.
“Let’s call this what it is. These are blasphemy laws dressed up in modern language.”
“No religion, ideology or belief system should be protected from criticism, ridicule, scrutiny or robust public debate. In a free society, ideas don’t have rights. People do.”
Seiuli said New Zealand has already rejected hate speech laws multiple times, with successive governments backing away from proposals after overwhelming public opposition.
“New Zealanders have consistently made their position clear. We do not want the government deciding which opinions are acceptable and which are criminal.”
“Freedom of expression is not a privilege granted by politicians. It is a fundamental right that underpins every other freedom we enjoy.”
PILLAR warned that hate speech laws inevitably expand beyond their original intent, creating uncertainty about what people can say and encouraging political censorship.
“Around the world we’ve seen these laws weaponised against political opponents, religious minorities, journalists, activists and ordinary citizens. Once government gains the power to police opinions, that power never remains narrowly confined.”
Seiuli said while genuine threats, harassment and incitement to violence are already illegal under New Zealand law, criminalising offensive or controversial opinions crosses a dangerous constitutional line.
“If someone threatens violence, prosecute them. If someone commits harassment, prosecute them. But don’t criminalise peaceful speech simply because somebody finds it offensive.”
“The answer to bad ideas has never been government censorship. The answer is better ideas, open debate and the freedom to challenge one another.”
Seiuli said renewed calls for hate speech laws reinforce why organisations like PILLAR exist.
“If organisations like PILLAR don’t occupy the public square defending liberty, someone else will occupy it arguing for censorship.”
“History is littered with examples of governments restricting speech in the name of safety, harmony or public order. Those restrictions rarely remain limited, and they almost always come at the expense of individual liberty.”
“New Zealand does not need hate speech laws. It does not need blasphemy laws. It needs the courage to defend freedom of speech, especially when that speech is unpopular.”

ACT leader David Seymour has hit back at claims made by Finance Minister Nicola Willis that ACT and NZ First were the reason that National was unable to get flexible paid parental leave across the line this government term.
She added: “I think it is a shame that it wasn’t prioritised … and we are really keen as a National Party to see this done.”
Responding to Willis on Sunday afternoon, Seymour said he was “disappointed” in her comments as he believes people want to see the coalition “pointing to what it has achieved rather than pointing fingers at each other”.
“I am disappointed to see comments that Brooke van Velden has not prioritised flexible parental leave. She has not been asked by the National Party to do that, it is not in their coalition documents, they didn’t try and negotiate it into their agreement.
“They have opposed this policy for a long time, and then the Stuart Nash-Katy Nimon thing comes out a few days later,” he said.
NZ First leader Winston Peters was also critical of the timing, saying on X “It’s good to see the National Party all of a sudden change their mind on extending paid parental leave after vetoing extending it and voting against it in 2016 and 2017.”
Asked about the timing of the policy, Prime Minister Christopher Luxon dismissed any suggestion that it was capitalising on the Nash controversy, saying the party had a series of family policies which it was releasing over time.
