I’ve got a real feature in one of my cars. It has the gear selector where the indicator is on my Toyota – the righthand stalk. So if I forget which vehicle I’m in and go to indicate left, it puts the car in neutral. Excellent when pulling in from a tight overtaking maneuver. And a bonus is that you get to see how high your engine can actually rev with no load.
And yet you bought the car….or did you win it in a raffle?

That warmth hangs around for a while ( basic physics, the longer it takes to heat, the longer it takes to dissipate the heat) and that moderates the atmoshere’s temperature significantly. The atmosphere has little to no impact on the temperature of the ocean except for the latent heat exchnage during evaporation. ( Cools the surface ever so slightly). 🚩 Datagrid’s proposed datacentre is on track to become one of the largest rent-seeking plays New Zealand has ever seen.
The facility planned near Invercargill will draw a continuous 280 MW initially — about 6% of everything our grid currently produces.
Their own proposal signals they’ll scale that to more than three times the load, meaning this single site could eventually gobble 20% of the country’s total electricity generation.
For context, Tiwai Point aluminium smelter is currently NZ’s biggest power user at roughly 10–12%. This datacentre will blow that out of the water and, within a few years, will need the entire output of the Manapōuri hydro station just to keep the lights on.
The economics are even uglier. Tiwai returns about $105 of GDP per MWh of electricity. Datagrid’s centre will be lucky to manage $24 — and independent assessments put the real figure closer to $12. That’s a problem.
MBIE’s own numbers on industry’s power use to crate $1 of GDP for NZ are stark :
Fishing & forestry: 2 MJ per $1 of GDP
Chemicals & metals: 12 MJ per $1 of GDP
General industry: 11.5 MJ per $1 of GDP
This datacentre??: 147 MJ per $1 of GDP
NZ’s real vulnerability is energy security. The price of power ultimately sets the quality of life. High electricity prices are already crushing industry and driving de-industrialisation here and across other Western economies.
NZ First is pushing (strongly opposed by National and ACT) to break up the gentailer complex — the four big vertically integrated companies that dominate both generation and retail. That structure lets them shift costs internally, favour their own retail arms, and shape wholesale prices in ways that have delivered record profits alongside record power bills. Perverse.
Enter Mercury: they’ve taken a $30 m, 12.7% stake in the foreign-controlled (French/Singaporean) Datagrid venture and have already locked in preferential power rates for the datacentre.
So let’s recap:
i) A power generator
ii) That is also a retailer
iii) That also owns a chunk of what will be NZ’s largest single power consumer — by far the least efficient user of our scarce electricity — and will supply it large volumes at cut-price rates
Is this retarded? Yes
This project wants to hoover up 20% of our generation capacity. They claim they’ll build more generation themselves, but solar panels won’t cut it — do you honestly believe they’re going to construct another Clyde Dam? Basically Kiwis will end up subsiding this foreign owned and low economic output mouse factory, while we watch more and more industry close and our bills climb .
The opportunity cost of diverting that much electricity away from higher-value NZ industry into a low-return datacentre is economic suicide. Power usage on this scale means higher electricity prices – we have limited electrons to spare.
Break up the gentailers and take a very hard look at this proposal.

Prominent Northland farmer and anti-Treaty activist Allan Titford has been granted parole on his 10th attempt, after serving almost 13 years behind bars.
Titford was sentenced to a total of 24 years in prison in 2013 after a jury found him guilty of 39 charges related to raping his wife, violence against his children, perjury, obstructing justice, and burning down his own home – an arson attack he blamed on local Māori.
The jury found him not guilty of 14 charges, which included other charges of rape and arson, threatening to kill and assault.
Titford, who is now in his mid-60s, appeared for the last time before the Parole Board yesterday afternoon.
His release date and location were suppressed but he will be living in a rural area in the North Island.
He will be prohibited from travelling north of the Brynderwyn Hills, which form the border between Auckland and Northland, and to Pukekohe in South Auckland.
The four-member panel repeatedly asked Titford if he had committed the offences he was convicted of.
He was also asked if he had “hurt his children pretty badly”, as they claimed in court in 2013.
He did not directly deny the offences, but said he would maintain the position he held during the trial “until hell freezes over”.
He did, however, accept he had been convicted, whether he committed the offences or not.
“You’ve got to accept the situation. I’ve been found guilty of the offending, I’ve got to accept that’s what happened.”
Asked a second time by Parole Board member Susanna Every-Palmer if he had hurt his children, he again avoided a direct answer.
“What do you perceive as hurt? Some of them have withdrawn their statements now they are parents themselves. I could say I was hurt by the Catholic school I went to … You’re asking me to plead guilty, I’m not doing that.”
He claimed difficulties with his children had been caused by “interference” by their grandparents and teachers.
Corrections staff were complimentary of Titford’s conduct.
A prison officer said there had been no misconduct, he “did a really good job” of looking after the prison recycling, got on well with other prisoners and was respectful of staff.
His case manager said she had accompanied him on a guided release to his future home and a first meeting with his brother since he was locked up.
Both had gone well, she said.
Titford himself described prison, in recent years, as “the friendliest environment I’ve ever lived in”.
Part of that was because of his job, which made him well-known to prisoners and staff alike.
Board member Gemma Rogers asked him how, once he was released, he would respond to people whose point of view he did not agree with.
He told her he would now just say, “You’ve got your opinion, I’ve got mine”, and walk away.
The “intermittently strained” relationship with his brother was because of political issues 40 years ago, he said.
Once outside, he would keep himself busy with court cases he was pursuing against the Far North District Council over rates and land access, against a power company, and trying to recover a seized fishing trawler.
During the hearing, Titford often meandered off topic or failed to answer the questions asked.
However, he was clear about what he was looking forward to most after his release: joining language classes and continuing the learning he had started in prison.
“Learning Spanish is my playground, my party time,” he said.
As well as exclusion zones, other parole conditions include a curfew, electronic monitoring, and a ban on firearms.
When sentencing Titford in the Whangārei District Court 13 years ago, Judge Duncan Harvey said the then 53-year-old had subjected his wife and family to a “reign of terror”.
After his Maunganui Bluff farm was bought by the Crown in the 1990s to settle a Treaty claim with local iwi Te Roroa, Judge Harvey said Titford tried to win public sympathy by sabotaging his own bulldozer and burning down his own homestead.
“These incidents received nationwide publicity and, as a result of your actions, the local Māori people earned the anger of many people in New Zealand who sympathised with you because of what they saw as a grave injustice. It is time for the people of New Zealand to learn the truth,” Judge Harvey said.
The compulsory purchase of his farm sparked Titford’s 20-year campaign against the Waitangi Tribunal and the Treaty settlements process.

The fines are on top of the punishment for breaching a move-on order, which is a maximum $2000 fine or three months’ prison.
The Government says the orders are necessary to fill a gap in police powers, so they can clean up city centres and improve public safety.
Police will be able to issue a move-on order to anyone as young as 14 for disorderly or disruptive behaviour in public places, including begging or rough sleeping. It will apply for 24 hours.
Business groups and Auckland Mayor Wayne Brown have welcomed it, though Retail NZ is opposed as it could simply move the issue from one shopfront to another.

Fortunatly I am a citizen, but they questioned me and said I needed to carry my passport with me at all times. Although they were very polite, it was still a worrying experience and my Italian was good enough for them not to be overly suspicious ( evidently they were cracking down on East European illigals according to my uncle who lived there. ). It has benefits, and most Italians are not bothered by it, but since Covid, I have become much more suspicious of any government overreach….

On Friday the Ministry of Finance and State Taxation Administration issued the “Announcement on Matters Concerning Individual Income Tax on Offshore Trusts (MOF and STA Announcement No. 21 of 2026)”, translated here.
If you are a PRC tax resident, Beijing wants to tax the trust as though the assets and income are still yours. Moving property into an offshore trust can itself create a taxable gain. After that, the trust’s income, including income earned through offshore companies it owns or controls, is taxable every year even if nothing is distributed.
The provision that may cause the most anxiety is the one saying foreign citizenship or permanent residence abroad does not necessarily let you avoid the tax. If a person’s “principal economic interests” remain in China, the tax authorities may still treat that person as domiciled there.
There is a 90-day window to clean up certain unpaid taxes going back to January 1, 2023 without late-payment surcharges.
Lots of people have received or will soon receive calls asking them to declare assets in overseas trusts and pay back taxes for the last three years, if not longer if the numbers are really large. On the one hand, the authorities are closing a loophole to enforce existing law, on the other this is another move in the tightening of control over the flow of money offshore, and will probably not help confidence.

I’ve read his autobiography ‘Rescue Pilot’ which traces his career as a chopper pilot & his various battles with officialdom to secure support & funding for search & rescue operations over the plateau area.
He was the pilot when in 1992 a conservation worker who had suffered serious sharkbite wounds was rescued from Campbell Island. More than a few Kiwis owe their lives to his guts & skills.
