Why do so many liberal white women react so strongly to anything right of centre?
It is a pattern visible across the United States, Britain, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and parts of Europe. Online and in certain professional circles, a noticeable group of white women with progressive politics treat centre-right or conservative ideas as not merely wrong but morally radioactive. The intensity can look extreme. People naturally ask: what is going on? Is something wrong with them? Is it upbringing, education, or something else? And does it last a lifetime?
The short answer is that nothing is uniquely “wrong” with them as a group. The pattern is real, measurable, and largely explainable by a combination of personality averages, educational sorting, and social incentives. Treating millions of individuals as a defective class is as crude as the reverse stereotype.
What the data actually shows
University-educated white women have moved left faster than most other demographic groups in the English-speaking world since the 1990s. This shows up consistently in Pew Research, the General Social Survey, the British Election Study and similar sources. The strongest versions of the intensity appear among a visible subset: urban, postgraduate, and concentrated in media, academia, education, HR and NGOs. It is not the median woman who votes centre-left and gets on with her life.
Similar leftward skews appear among highly educated women of other backgrounds in the same environments. The focus on “white women” is common mainly because that group is large and culturally central in Western media.
Education is part of the story — but not simple indoctrination
Higher education correlates with more left-liberal views, yet the effect is not uniform. It is strongest in the humanities, social sciences, education, psychology and related fields. It is much weaker, and sometimes reversed, in engineering, physics, computer science, economics and business.
Women are heavily over-represented in the first group of subjects and under-represented in the second. That compositional difference explains a large part of the gender gap. Men who study the same progressive-leaning fields often show similar political shifts. Men who stay in more technical fields do not.
Personality averages also matter. Women, on average, score higher than men on trait Neuroticism and on the moral foundations of Care and Fairness. These traits predict stronger responses when politics is framed as a contest between compassion and harm. Men, on average, score higher on systemizing and show lower average emotional reactivity to the same framings. These are group averages with wide overlap, not destiny.
Social incentives reinforce the pattern. In many female-dominated professional and online environments, progressive signalling carries status rewards while dissent carries social costs. Male-dominated environments more often tolerate contrarian views on economics, crime and speech.
Upbringing plays a role, but adult institutions and peer groups appear to do more of the amplifying work than childhood alone.
Does it last a lifetime?
For some people, yes — especially those whose identity, career and social world are built around progressive politics. For many others it softens. Parenthood, ageing, mortgages and direct experience of policy trade-offs often pull people toward the centre on at least some issues. Longitudinal studies show a general tendency for people to become somewhat more conservative with age on economic and order-related questions, though the broader cultural shift of recent decades has partially offset that trend.
A clearer way to look at it
The intensity is real in certain circles. It is better understood as the product of educational sorting, average personality differences, and status incentives than as a character flaw or lifelong brainwashing. Online environments make the loudest voices look like the whole group. They are not.
Polarisation has increased. Specific high-education environments have developed strong progressive norms. Those are the mechanisms worth examining — not a diagnosis of an entire sex-and-race category.
Like in the waitaki electorate white liberal women are lining up to vote for 1 of the 2 stale old 68 year males who are lining up for a good salary to get them into their 70s .

And that’s the problem. Anything done by the right is portrayed as uncaring of people or harmful to them or the environment. The reality is that what constitutes caring is subjective. For instance, is it caring to allow your country’s manufacturing and services to be offshored, sending some formerly productive workers into depression and drug use? Having them homeless, zombie-like, filthy and shitting themselves? Is it caring to then give them free drugs and places to take them?
Or is it caring to protect your workers, keeping them employed, and provide meaningful support for people who do end up homeless and/or addicted?
I can guarantee that many women on the left support climate change policies that destroy NZ’s often already limited ability to compete economically. To my mind, those women are uncaring and harm NZ society and the future prospects of our youth. But they would never in a million years be able to consider that possibility, as in my opinion, they lack critical thinking skills and the ability to introspect. Which probably also explains why women in technology fields are more “right leaning”, because they can actually apply logic.
As a real life example of the lack of logical reasoning/critical thinking skills, at one point I had a real lefty FWB. When discussing the policy of the Wellington DHB giving extra points to Maori and PI for access to services, she said that wasn’t racist, I asked her to replace Maori and PI with NZ European and tell me if it was racist then. Yes, it would be, according to her. And got really angry when challenged.

Another way of phrasing that would stress that those who create the most noise gravitate to places where noise is rewarded disproportionately to actual accomplishments. Opening your trap & letting the norwester blow your tongue around boosts the ego while avoiding any real work.

Though they may be ignorant, they are very arrogant, and supposedly unwittingly will use thugs to control you too.
But consider how adaptable the New Zealand systemic judiciary, parole board, etc for other ideologies to expand in NZ.
