US intervenes in FX market to support Yen
The US Treasury and Japan’s Ministry of Finance conducted a coordinated yen purchase on Friday, the first bilateral action in fifteen years. USD/JPY moved from 163.73 to approximately 155. However, the mechanism behind this move is more informative than the announcement. Tokyo indicated that it intends to draw on the Federal Reserve’s FIMA repo facility in the future, which permits foreign monetary authorities to raise dollars against Treasury collateral rather than through outright sales.
The motivation for US authorities to provide this backstop is to keep Japan, the largest foreign holder of US debt, to liquidate Treasuries into an already fragile market. However, it is unclear whether currency intervention will be a long term solution for structural monetary imbalances. The Bank of Japan’s policy rate stands at 1% against a Fed at 3.50–3.75%. Intervention addresses volatility, not the differential that produced it.
In layman terms Japan wanted some money, selling US bonds would collapse the dollar so instead used those bonds to borrow against.

Funny you should say that, NIWA HQ up here is in the old power station building right on the beach in Ruakaka. This month, Auckland Mayor Wayne Brown kicked off his 100 Days of Startups campaign, pledging to wear the T-shirt of a different company and share their story to social media every day to showcase the world-class ideas coming out of New Zealand, especially Auckland.
In my nearly 15 years of building a startup, this is the first time a local government leader has decided to showcase our tech ecosystem, made up of companies that are making brilliant tools used around the world, while creating high-paying jobs and growing our economy.
Every day, founders and investors are making decisions on where to build startups or invest capital; formal recognition from the Government is a clear signal New Zealand will support building the next “unicorn” billion-dollar idea.
Second, lock in the reversal of the steady “exodus” of people through effective immigration settings to attract world-class tech talent. People want to move here; we have the natural environment and the lifestyle, but we lack the pathways that make it easy for top talent to migrate. This can be solved through a fast and responsible immigration pathway for skilled tech workers which will keep more high-paying roles here in New Zealand as Kiwi companies decide to go global.
This also includes removing barriers like the foreign investment fund (FIF) tax rules on foreign investments, which ministers have acknowledged place major barriers on some people moving here, including Kiwis who have been successful overseas.
Finally, there are necessary steps to ensure everyone can share in the success of locally grown unicorns through changes to the capital pipeline. Right now, many Kiwis – even those with savings – simply miss out. We need a rising tide that will lift all boats.
This means reviewing the NZ Super Fund mandate to encourage the funds’ “guardian body” to maximise returns with a specific focus on domestic assets and enable late-stage investment in local tech. This would make it easier for KiwiSaver funds to gain exposure to these companies.
Currently close to two-thirds of Kiwisaver funds are invested in international equities or fixed interest investments. Meanwhile, just 0.2% of Kiwisaver is invested in local venture capital, compared to 4.4% of Australian superannuation funds in their companies.
Changing the settings which discourage more early-stage local investment can turn a good decade for local technology into a defining one, so we’re not just producing world-class startups, but backing them, too.
Let’s keep throwing on those T-shirts like Mayor Brown and choose pride, ambition and action for Kiwis.

I read that, and I have to say that, despite Bradbury being a lefty and being hoist by his own petard, he is indeed entitled to free speech, and if that offends someone, then they have (ordinarily, but we can’t rely on the court for that, it seems), this is an issue of free speech. The complainant is free to sue Bradbury, of course, but then the court of an honest held opinion comes into play. If defamed, it is on the complainant to establish that he has.

Rescue boat crews showed signs of brain injuries, but the US Coast Guard wasn’t lookingUntreated and undiagnosed, the crews that save lives in the roughest seas face the relentless pounding of waves.
Brett Bonner saved hundreds of lives during 21 years on rescue boats in the Coast Guard. When he died, his teenage daughter Kayleigh wondered why he couldn’t save his own.
He was a big, gregarious man who seemed able to handle anything. But as Kayleigh grew up, she watched him slowly fall apart. First came headaches, and sleeplessness. His memory frayed and his moods turned raw.
When he retired from the Coast Guard at age 40 in 2022, things grew worse. He would rant and scream. One afternoon he dropped her grandfather with one punch. In the months after, he started setting things on fire.
On a winter evening in 2025, with a pile of Coast Guard files burning on the living room floor, he walked out the front door and took his own life.
Kayleigh, her mother, her younger sister and her two little brothers all saw it happen.
He left no note. He offered no explanation. His unravelling left his family so perplexed about how to sum up his life that they buried him without a headstone.
Kayleigh, who is now 18, was devastated. But after the funeral, she started to wonder.
Her father was a surfman – an elite rescuer whose job was to drive lifeboats through crashing waves as high as 8 metres. Maybe all those years crashing into waves had left her father with an unseen brain injury, like a linebacker who had too many tackles. And maybe he wasn’t the only one.
She looked for answers from the Coast Guard but found nothing. The service has never studied the hazard that waves may pose to the brain and knows little about the force of the hits or the consequences of years of exposure.
With no official sources to rely on, Kayleigh turned to the only source that might offer some clues: other surfmen.
She sent questionnaires to scores of them, using a survey of Navy crews as a template, and asked 36 questions about their service and their health. In all, 77 active and retired surfmen responded. Their answers were so stunning that they changed her whole perspective on her father.

Thge Free Speech Union deserves kudos for its response to Martin Bradbury’s District Court interim gagging via the Harmful Digital Communications Act. Despite Bradbury’s antagonism to the FSU he confirmed that he had contacted the Union. If they get in behind Bradbury they’ll lose some backing from present supporters but they may broaden their overall support base.
Bradbury is a loose canon but he’s not always wrong & he possesses a backbone which is a rare quality for a socialist.
I’ll be watching what happens. Very carefully.

“Mr Luxon clearly thinks highly of his own performance in politics and businesses. His rise in the former was meteoric while he progressed more steadily during his 18 years at Unilever and eight at Air New Zealand. Yet his own self-belief may not align exactly with known facts.
In Rotorua, he spoke of being a chief executive in Illinois yet he never rose so high during his five years in the US, becoming a brand development director and regional category vice president.
He spent just two and a half years as Unilever’s chief executive in Canada before becoming group general manager at Air New Zealand. Such lack of precision can become an issue during a tense election campaign.
Also startling was his very suggestion that US businesses, including Unilever, do not focus on government like New Zealand ones.
“I sat in Illinois for six years in Chicago, and the last person I wanted to ever talk to as a CEO (sic) was the government,” he said.
That would be news to the enormous US lobbying industry in Washington DC and every state capital. Unilever has in-house lobbying capability, retains lobbying law firms and is member of a wide range of business and trade groups. Perhaps, as a brand and category manager, Mr Luxon was not privy to that activity.
Yet he most certainly had visibility of Air New Zealand’s government relations activity, not least because the government was, and is, its majority shareholder, and in practice provides an implicit underwrite.
