To be fair Lange spoke for more than a few when he uttered that debate winning line. At the time Kiwis had more than a gutsful of French nuclear testing at Muraroa. On top of that we we weren’t as a country particularly happy about USA bullying over nuke powered/armed vessels on the back of our support in Vietnam.

Why History shows that the first National Minister to publicly break from Luxon will likely be the person to replace him.
If the National caucus wants a blueprint for how a bungled attempt to remove a leader can still ultimately succeed,
Then they need look no further than David Cunliffe in 2012.
Because the parallels between what is happening today with the crisis of leadership within the National caucus and the leadership crisis that engulfed Labour in 2012 are uncanny.
However, there is one big difference: David Cunliffe, the challenger to then-Labour leader David Shearer, actually succeeded.
So how did he do it?
Before we can answer that question, we first need to go back to the beginning.
It starts with Cunliffe refusing to explicitly rule out challenging David Shearer
Sound familiar?
David Shearer got wind of it and called an immediate confidence vote.
Sound familiar?
Shearer won the confidence vote.
Sound familiar?
And then Shearer punished his challenger, Cunliffe, by stripping him of his portfolios and relegating him to the backbench.
Sound familiar?
At this point, the media started reporting that David Shearer had won the confidence vote and the threat of Cunliffe had been vanquished.
Sound familiar?
However, we now in fact, know that David Shearer wasn’t safe at all.
Because David Cunliffe did something that nobody in the National caucus has yet thought to do.
Something that would ultimately secure him the leadership.
He refused to give Shearer the one thing he still desperately needed:
An unequivocal commitment that he would support him going into the 2013 Labour AGM.
Whether David Cunliffe, David Shearer or the rest of the Labour caucus knew it at the time or not, Cunliffe publicly undermined Shearer’s weakened Shearer’s position
Because Shearer understood what Cunliffe’s refusal meant.
Winning the confidence vote hadn’t made his leadership secure.
It had merely bought him time.
Much in the same way that, in my view, the recent confidence vote has merely bought Christopher Luxon time.
And this is the part of this history that the National caucus should be paying very close attention to.
Because at this point, the only difference between these two stories is the ending.
If the National caucus wants to know what David Cunliffe did that ultimately secured him the Labour leadership, they need to pay attention to the fact that he publicly undermined David Shearer.
That is the difference.
Because while Erica Stanford remained silent when asked whether she was challenging Luxon for the leadership, neither she nor anybody else in the National caucus – not even Chris Penk, the eventual fall guy, publicly stated that they do not support Christopher Luxon as their leader.
Which is why I am of the opinion that the first National Cabinet Minister – whether it be Erica Stanford, Chris Bishop or Mark Mitchell – to publicly and unequivocally say that Christopher Luxon no longer has their support,
and that they would support another confidence vote, would put themselves in a very powerful position.
Keep in mind, the only reason Luxon survived that second confidence vote was because the caucus couldn’t agree on who should be the challenger.
And that likely isn’t going to change until a member of the caucus publicly says that they’re gunning for Luxon’s job.
Because the moment one potential successor breaks ranks and says that Luxon no longer has their confidence, that is when the political calculation among the rest of the caucus changes.
Suddenly, the other contenders are no longer contenders.
They’ve missed the opportunity that the first caucus member to break from Luxon seized.
Forcing them to pick a side
Do they back the leader whose authority has been seriously tested and who is now extremely vulnerable?
Or do they back the candidate who, in that moment, has clearly established themselves as the strongest alternative?
What is likely to happen within the National caucus is what happened within the Labour caucus back in 2012.
They will have little choice but to fall in behind the challenger.
And believe it or nkt Luxon is even more vulnerable than Sherer was
Why? Because the Labour caucus actually liked Sherer.
But they were ultimately forced to fall in behind Cunliffe because Shearer was vulnerable and Cunliffe, in that moment, was strong.
And he was strong because of the leverage he had acquired by publicly making his position clear: he would not vote for David Shearer at the 2013 Labour AGM.
And in doing so, Cunliffe rose from the political grave of the backbench to eventually become Labour leader.
Which is why those in the political commentariat are wrong to think that Christopher Luxon is out of the woods.
Because history has shown that surviving a confidence vote doesn’t mean you have survived a leadership crisis.
In fact, if history is anything to go by, it is usually the beginning of the end.
Because check the tape.
Despite all the revisionist history surrounding political coups in New Zealand, there has actually never been a sitting New Zealand Prime Minister removed from office simply because they lost a caucus confidence vote.
David Lange was removed as Labour leader, yes.
But he never lost a confidence vote.
When Roger Douglas challenged him for the Labour leadership in 1988, Lange won 38–15.
Yet winning the vote did not resolve the fundamental problem.
Lange understood that he could not effectively govern without the confidence of his caucus behind him.
As divisions within Labour deepened, he eventually stepped aside and handed the reins to his deputy, Geoffrey Palmer.
Likewise, Jim Bolger offers another version of the same lesson.
When Jenny Shipley mounted her challenge against him in 1997, they didn’t even get to the confidence vote.
Bolger already knew that Shipley had the numbers.
So rather than force his caucus through a public vote that would merely formalise what he already knew, he resigned and allowed Shipley to take the reins.
And likewise, it was exactly the same for David Shearer.
Because once Shearer understood that Cunliffe would not commit to supporting him at the next leadership review, he knew that surviving the confidence vote had not secured his leadership.
Which is why Christopher Luxon should not be celebrating this as though the leadership crisis is over.
Because history suggests that surviving the vote is the easy part.
The difficult part is surviving what comes afterwards.
The one party leader who provides the strongest counterexample is Helen Clark.
She survived a leadership challenge in 1996 and went on to lead Labour to three election victories and nine years in government.
But if anybody has been paying attention to Christopher Luxon over the past three years, they will know one thing:
Christopher Luxon is no Helen Clark.
Until the master manipulator Cunliffe who undermined his leader pre-empted the whole woke “what is a woman” by slitting his own throat “apologising for being a man”. //

3) Presentable leader who hasn’t yet adopted the world weary, bitter cynicism displayed by every other current political leader.
4) No history. No matter how much lipstick you put on the dogs both National & Labour come across as anachronisms especially to under 30s voters.
5) Enthusiastic support from the MSM who are determined to get a far left government installed in November.

I recall many years ago, an old farmer that said it would be good for New Zealand to have vultures on a hill country farm.
It would help if finding a beast or sheep in problems.
The the clean up, would hopefully reduce the flies, the problems of flystrike in particular in sheep.
Possibly reduce rats that may be getting free feeds from carcasses.
Bearing in mind they carry Leptospirosis which is quietly increasing in farming areas.
So would be just a good general clean-up of any dead, but no real problem as they are supposedly not birds of prey.
I do not know how agressive they are on the living, or is it a swifter mercy.
