The Elephant in the room
The Paul Davidson report has just been released on the tragic Mt Maunganui slip.
in June 2023 Tauranga City Council approved the removal of eight large exotic trees from Mt Maunganui, including a Holm Oak, pine, poplar, chestnut, and macrocarpa.
The work involved helicopters and mechanical disturbance on steep terrain. At the time, the council itself acknowledged that such disturbance could trigger slope instability.
The risk was neither unknown nor theoretical. It was recognised and accepted!!!
These trees were not removed because they were unsafe, diseased, or failing. They were removed to comply with the 2018 Mauao Historic Reserve Management Plan, which mandates the progressive removal of exotic species to restore the maunga to a culturally preferred ecological state under the direction of the Tupuna Maunga Authority.
Morning all from Ranfurly Shield country for the first time in 50 odd years.
And a very good win it was. Showed they had the better of the forwards early on, the 42-0 demolition of Taranaki the week before gave a fairly big clue that it was going to be a real challenge. Tasman not the team it has been ….but will be a tough first challenge for you.
Don’t worry Phil, being Northland we’ll fly to pieces in the next few weeks. Being a Northland fan is a challenging thing.
I see you have been busy with your usual smarmy bullshit this morning.

Sorry to see you getting down ticks there V. When you’re the worlds greatest journalist, loved by all you do get the odd detractor. Water off a ducks back to someone as marvelous as myself as I’m sure everyone around here realises. Might go for a walk across Whangarei Harbour after smoko, teach a few cripples of colour to walk again and then sort out Stevie Wonders eye sight. All in a days work for a deity as beloved as me. Thank God I’m not at all pompous.
The road industry rip-off
A few weeks ago, I was invited to go for a lap in an Electric Volvo truck at Mystery Creek with David Fryer at the EROAD Fleet Days. If ya interested check it out… Thanks for your time, David. It’s always good to learn new stuff about trucks
Rock on #electric #VolvoTrucks #trucking #electrictrucks.
https://www.facebook.com/reel/907774098611524
Now you have to watch and listen to the conversation at the end. No road charges on a big electric truck and a 25% discount from the Govt. if you buy one.
Never mind the taxpayer who earns a living out there.
.
‘A few weeks ago, I was invited to go for a lap in an Electric Volvo truck…’
Well, you have a remarkably young voice, who knew you’d say yep quite so often.
😂 the copy paste bandit strikes again.
if EV volvo trucks are anything like their cars then avoid them like the plague unless you like it getting towed back to the dealer alot for repairs.
fwiw in aus my boss has a kia plug in EV, holy farken shit that thing is mental. not too bad of range aswell, gets 450-500km under normal conditions but who knows 5yrs from now i guess.
n 1991 #Ukraine received the richest part of the #USSR with the world’s best black earths, developed industry, army and 52 million inhabitants.
In just one generation, Ukrainians have screwed up absolutely everything.
By the time of the coup d’état in 2014, they had sold, robbed and ruined all their heritage against the wall.
Today, according to their social minister, there are 22 million residents in #Ukraine, of which 11 million are pensioners who will no longer give birth to anyone, and Ukrainian women have a fertility rate of 0.9-1.0, that is, by the end of the century, even without taking into account the war, only three million Ukrainians will remain.
MATH says Ukraine can never repopulate after such losses. Two mass migrations occurred before the SMO. Millions of young people fled once SMO started. 11M left with Donbass & Crimea & sadly 2M breeding age men have been killed.
Whats left are elderly, women & kids. 1/2 of what remains are not of breeding age.
Roughly 9-10 M people.
Zelenskyy sold Ukraine out for a NATO proxy war to provoke Russia into a conflict, beat her “drunk” army & divide Russia into 7 new NATO countries then rob her rich assets especially her $8 Trillion in Arctic oil & gas.
After nearly 2 decades of planning, it was suppose to be easy.
Zelenskyy’s crime has made him fabulously rich but like Putin said in 2022. He’ll never be allowed to spend it.
He knows too much.
#ProjectUkraine started in 2003. Russia knew & was ready
Of the many, many times I went to the Ukraine for business (every 6 weeks for 12 years) the Ukraine during the 1980’s – early 1990’s was singularly the most corrupt, violent shithole. Countries like Nigeria and Mozambique paled into peaceful backrooms compared. Nothing will change with the Ukraine and dumb Politicians in countries like New Zealand want to throw Millions and Billions to “save” this shithole, a place most who do want to “save” it have never been too and seen the corruption, violence and crime that pervade there and who, in the bulk of the country, main language is Russian.
what a fucking piece of bludging shit that commie bomber is…
“I’m as embarrassed about allowing this bloody court case to get into my headspace and lose enough focus to trip as I am in asking the following:

solo dad ay, jaysus fucking christ that thing managed to breed, that poor fucking child.
anyways, the only thing ill donate is perhaps a ladder to fall off or a new pair of clown shoes. im sure some pathetic commie loving cucks will shell out a few bucks of someone elses money to the fuckwit.

How new fast-track has revived colossal salmon farm once rejected for ecological harmThe same 80 pens, the same 25-year term, the same rare penguin in the way – but a different law means a different answer for Ngāi Tahu’s aquaculture bid

Have read the report and the comments.
“We cannot afford for another breeding pair of HoiHo to be put at risk…critically endangered species only found in small pockets of East Coast South Island from Bank Peninsula to Rakiura.
I’m gobsmacked that Ngai Tahu would even want to do this.” I’m not.
“And let’s close the door on the concept that Ngai Tahu and its other iwi backers have some sort of special position as regards concern for the environment.” Never have.
A majority of New Zealanders say increases in the cost of living over the past 12 months are due to international events or the coalition Government’s handling of the economy, rather than the previous Labour government, according to polling data released exclusively to Newsroom.
The findings of the Horizon Research poll of 1028 adults, which ran from August 5 to 11, undercut the National Party’s argument that Labour is to blame for persistent inflation.
When asked which factor was most responsible for inflation over the past year, 31 percent of respondents selected “International events and economic conditions (including Donald Trump’s tariffs and overseas conflicts)” and 29 percent selected the current coalition Government. Seventeen percent blamed the previous Labour government.

Another nail in the nats coffin then.
i see stuff are having conniptions about record high mince prices today… yup, thank joe biden for that cuz his govts actions forced american farmers to cull their herds incl breeding stock and go all out on corn and soy. now theres a massive shortfall of red meat and will continue to be so for at least another year or 2 until herd numbers rebuild.
stupid boy is stoked, hes got a stonker wagyu steer and couple of heifers going to the works in the next week or so. stock agent rekons the big fulla will fetch me 4.5-5k!!! think the schedule is still high 9bux per kg.
think the schedule is still high 9bux per kg.
Probably at its peakyness, & companies will pull that schedule back when they can.
“Make $hay while the sun shines”, as nobody know’s the future.
Funny thing, one of your South Island companies, this week, have paid $10.00 in the North Island on very heavy steers.
It was a long haul so topping the truck off may have been part of that offer, that turned up as same day pickup, at the very last moment.
I have no idea of local trade, but this time to compete that should be over $10.oo at this time of year.
The only catch with the Wagyu steer, I do not think you have massaged the poor beast enough; & you changed the ratio of beer for it, like reducing from 2 for the steer & then increased it for more than 1 for you; you greedy drunken ‘stupid boy’. 😋
The lower price the South Island probably is because of smaller population, thank your lucky stars.
All the people are concerned about is the “cost of living”.
Just like how in the old times the people of Moscow did not worry about bread on the table & where it came from.
In the very beginning the queues were not too long & the people kept trim, good & healthy while waiting.
Sure they had to queue but the good & “kindly” Soviet Government knew how to suppply so the Comrades (experts) were always “voted” in.
Just ask the people in the Ukraine who “kindly” contributed all they could, for the good of the community in Moscow & cities.
Who knows what the “holodormor” was?
Those people who suffered a bit, had done everything contrary to the spirit of the country by holding some grain back from the people in the cities.
Some in the name of speculating that the price of grain will rise.
Then why should they have grain to bake through the winter.
Just what is “seed-grain” but just an excuse, greed to keep back from the legitimate government.
As reported one hear of & see the wonderful Potemkin village that soon all the soviet citizens could all live in luxury by an award winning journalist of The New York Times Moscow bureau chief Walter Duranty—who won a Pulitzer Prize in 1932 plus a supportive number of other journo’s.
The queues continued on for another 50+ years, though just as difficult when the political turn around started.
The gulag was for you if anything was mentioned contrary of the indomitable ‘soviet’ spirit, that we must be in this altogether.
shows how low iq kiwis are.
just the other day i had a mate have a whinge… “this govt thinks inflation has slowed down but nothing has got any cheaper”
when kiwis dont understand inflation and basic economics then we’re fucked, theres many out there like my dumb fuck mate that dosent realise lower inflation just means prices still rise just slower than before.
wanting prices to drop or crash means massive deflation, so what they really want is the entire economy to collapse and be left jobless… even then it probs wont get any cheaper ffs.
energy (fuel/electricity) and rates were the main factors of the recent inflation data which wasnt actually that bad tbh
Energy because of Government polices and rates because of the acceptance that lets them raise to whatever.

So they went back to school. At the end of the the term, the teacher is walking around the class while they are doing their examination papers. The teacher stops, looks at them & says, “Are you two copying? ”
Rangi says, “No, sir!”
The teacher replies, “You tell lies, you are copying! For the first question, he’s written down ‘No’ & you’ve written down ‘No’.
For the second question, he’s written down ‘Yes’ & you’ve written down ‘Yes’.”
Rangi protests, “That doesn’t mean we’re copying, sir!”
The teacher says, “Oh yeah? Well, for the third question, he’s written down ‘I don’t know’ & you’ve written down ‘Neither do I!'”

For those, like me, who are starting to have hearing issues, this is interesting. It is from a FB post and sorry I don’t know how to put it up as a link without exposing the person’s FB page (ie. they are not the author of the post)
” My dad showed me the Bay Audiology invoice last Tuesday. $4,900 for two hearing aids. He’d been saving for eight months. I’m an electrical engineer. I took the device apart that weekend. What I found is why I’m writing this.
My name is Sarah. I’m 41. I design medical devices for a living in Auckland. I have spent fifteen years reverse-engineering circuit boards for a regulatory firm. I know exactly what a digital signal processing chip costs because I source them every week.
My father is 71. Retired. Lost most of his hearing in his right ear three years ago. Stopped going to family dinners because he couldn’t follow the conversation. Stopped calling me on Sundays. Started saying “never mind” instead of asking us to repeat ourselves.
Last spring my mum finally convinced him to go to Bay Audiology.
$4,900.
He didn’t tell me until after he’d paid. He knew I’d ask questions. He was right.
The Tuesday after he got fitted, I went to their house for dinner. He had them in. He was hearing. He was laughing at my son’s jokes for the first time in years. He looked ten years younger.
And I sat there watching him and thinking: there is no way that device cost what they charged him.
So I asked to borrow one for the weekend. Told him I wanted to “see how it worked.” He thought I was being a nerd. He was right about that too.
I took it back to my workshop on Saturday morning.
Opened the casing.
Here is what was inside.
One Knowles digital signal processing chip. Standard 16-channel architecture. I have ordered this exact component for prototyping. Bulk price from the manufacturer: between $32 and $41 USD depending on volume.
One Knowles balanced armature receiver. The speaker. Industry standard. $18 to $24 wholesale.
One MEMS microphone. Same component used in mid-range smartphones. $4 to $7.
A rechargeable lithium-polymer cell, a small antenna for the Bluetooth pairing, a circuit board, the moulded plastic shell, and the silicone ear tips.
Total component cost, sourced at retail-level quantities — not even bulk: approximately $155 to $195 NZD.
My father paid $4,900.
The markup is not 100%. It is not 500%. It is approximately 2,900%.
I want to be precise about what that number means and what it doesn’t mean.
It does not mean Bay Audiology is cheating anyone. The components are legitimately good. The audiologist is legitimately qualified. The fitting service has real value. What that markup represents is the cost of the distribution model — the retail footprint, the commissioned sales structure, the regional management, the head office, the advertising budget. All of that sits between a $155 chip and a $4,900 invoice.
That is not a scandal. That is a business model.
What is a scandal is that nobody told my dad there was another way.
I went home that Saturday and I started searching. Three different search engines. Industry databases I have access to through work. Trade publications. I wanted to find out who was selling hearing aids with the same components without the retail markup.
There are eleven companies doing it. I tested four. Three were rubbish — different chips, smaller batteries, no real channel processing. Marketing claims that didn’t match the hardware.
The fourth was different.
Lunova. Shipped from a warehouse in Ontario. I ordered a pair on Sunday evening. They arrived Wednesday morning. I took them apart Wednesday afternoon.
Same Knowles chip. Same balanced armature receiver. Same MEMS microphone. Same lithium-polymer cell. Different shell, different charging case, no Bluetooth chip — but for a 71-year-old man who wants to hear his grandchildren, the Bluetooth is not what matters. The processing chip is what matters. The receiver quality is what matters.
$330 NZD.
I tested them against my dad’s Bay Audiology pair using a calibrated audio bench I have at work. Speech-in-noise performance. Signal-to-noise ratio across frequency bands. Distortion at peak output. Battery cycle life.
The Bay Audiology pair was marginally better on two metrics. Marginally. The kind of difference you can measure on an oscilloscope but not hear in a restaurant. The Lunova was actually better on battery cycle life — newer cells, manufactured this year.
I drove back to my parents’ house on Sunday.
I gave my dad the Lunova pair and asked him to wear them for a week without telling him which was which. He wore the Lunova Monday through Friday. I asked him on Saturday morning which pair he’d been wearing.
He said: “The new ones. They’re a bit lighter. Otherwise I can’t tell the difference.”
He’s wearing the Lunova full-time now. The Bay Audiology pair is in the drawer. He returned them within the 30-day satisfaction window and got every dollar back.
He saved $4,570.
That money is going to my mum’s hip replacement physio that ACC won’t fully cover.
I am writing this because my dad asked me to. He said: “If you’d told me about this six months ago I’d have called you a fool. Now I want every man my age to know.”
So here is what every man your age — or every daughter watching her dad save up for this — needs to know.
The chip inside a $4,900 Bay Audiology hearing aid is approximately $40 USD. The full bill of materials is approximately $155 to $195 NZD. Every dollar above that is retail distribution, not device quality. Lunova sells the same component architecture for $330 NZD because it ships direct without the high street footprint, the commissioned salesforce, or the clinic overhead.
I am not paid by Lunova. I am an engineer who took the device apart, tested it against the premium brand on calibrated equipment, gave it to my dad for a blind trial, and watched him choose it on its own merits.
The audiologist’s full comparative report — five brands tested, every price listed, no brand paid for placement — is here:
https://www.getlunova.com/pages/oreille-nz?_ab=0…
If you want to skip the report and go straight to the product my dad now wears:
https://www.getlunova.com/…/lunova%E2%84%A2-comfort…
$330 NZD. 45-day trial. Send them back if they don’t work for you.
Sarah Chen Electrical Engineer, Medical Device Sector Auckland, New Zealand
P.S. My dad called me on Sunday for the first time in two years. Not because he needed anything. Just to talk. He stayed on the phone for forty-six minutes. That call is what $4,570 was buying — and what $330 finally bought back.
Load of advertising bullshit.
Having had 3 sets of the best over 23 years, I have some idea about this. I have looked at these cheapies and
1st question: do they have Bluetooth?
No, so that means you can’t hook them up to your phone or anything else, including your car, which I can do.
Are they variable between each ear? Often one ear is different from the other. And these usually are standard hear it and shout in your ear, instruments.
Best advice: get a proper hearing test.
I need a new pair now, and I’m checking out Reasonte. Monthly pay and new ones in three years’ time.
All the rest have been from Trident. Bloody expensive.
You may qualify for some govt. subsidy or in my case, ACC.
She was comparing like with like as much as she could. Whether they have bluetooth or not does not come into it. If you want to pay for some higher tech by monthly subscription, that is your choice.
Learn the hard way then.
sounds like an advert to buy a temu dropshippers product.
read it again and youll see the bullshit.
not saying the conclusion/outcome isnt true but the story is a load of fucking shit.
Thanks for the exposé. Audiology is a racket, pure & simple.
My hearing headed south, loosely written off as “industrial deafness” after years of excessive noise driving stock trucks & operating heavy equipment. This was followed by nearly thirty years as a cocky where hearing is an optional & extra sense so I resisted spending on aids for as long as possible. By the time my nearest & dearest was at the point of having me kidnapped & delivered in restraints to an audiologist the cheap options were no longer on the table.
The last supercharged, twin turbo, over-hyped & overpriced wax gatherers set me back a little over $10,000 four years ago. After reading the article referenced I found the same model (it’s probably old tech & superseded by now) on sale at Triton for $6300 with the govt subsidy.
There’s a hell of a multiplier between $330 & $6300. What a fucking rip-off.
My previous two cost 10,000 a pair including bluetooth. A year ago I went to Bloom because Southern Cross gave a discount. The latest pair cost me $5400. A streaming Bluetooth transmitter means Mrs Holy controls her sound output from the TV while my sound volume is controlled by the streaming app on my phone. Best outcome we have had in a long time.
Everyone gets the govt subsidy of 1100 every 5 years. So the life of a hearing aid is 5 years. Every upgrade has be an increase in performance, and reduction in price, despite the hearing deteriorating with age.
…..”Every upgrade has be an increase in performance”….
I hope you’re right. Presently I’m using Phonak Naida aids & when they were fitted the miserable audiologist told me there was nothing offering higher performance available.
Funny how times change. When I started work, using earmuffs while operating a chainsaw was frowned upon as the experts reckoned you wouldn’t be able to hear your workmates if they tried to warn you of something going wrong.
Now you’d be summarily sacked for walking onto a skid site without muffs, safety glasses & chainsaw chaps.
i used to use angle grinder with no earmuffs, plus the 10s of thousands of gunshots havent helped.
im paying for that now tho but the plus side is mrs sb dosent know if i ignored her instructions or genuinely didnt hear her 🙂
That markup does not reflect the layers involved along the way to retail, it’s exploitation pure and simple. And of vulnerable people without the skillset to evaluate alternative options. A fucking disgrace.

Under Opp party tax policy NZ dairy farmers could be paying $1,000 a week
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CvApWEzc-j0
This Week in Politics: TOP Tax, National Party Leadership, and More
The election picture is shifting fast, and the policies coming out of minor parties could change everything. We take a close look at TOP’s proposed land tax regime, which could cost the average dairy farmer $1,000 every single week and push thousands of property owners into negative numbers. Is it a radical economic reset, or complete madness? …
“It’s actual communism”.
assuming its a couple owning the farm then theyll get almost 40k ubi? if its syndicate/corporate then a room full of shareholders with ubi to pay for it.
but tbh i rekon we would end up with the land tax and nothing else in return, no ubi, nothing… just frittered away on bullshit and the bros
and as for “actual communism” um, no its fucking not. thats just as retarded as woke cunts screaming racist at everything.
Communism is where the state owns the resources & the means to create wealth. The land tax isn’t that; rather the proposed system reeks of enforced redistribution of wealth.
Socialism on steroids.
You will own your land and property until your death or can no longer pay the exhorbitant land tax. It might take a few years but the Opp party do intend to own all private property.
It is communism by stealth. Don’t scare the horses.
yawn, youve watched to many low iq clickbait clowns.
the ubi covers pretty much most of the landtaxes, the killer in their tax plan is the massive increase in income taxes, thats way more than most residential land taxes.
youre dumb as fuck and getting distracted by the clickbait and ignoring the actual big deal.
exactly.
then we have media clowns and other retards running around the past week and a half screaming “coup” which is just as fucking retarded as calling a tax communist.
is it for clickbait or are kiwis actually that fucking low iq and retarded?
Ending private property is in fact one of the goals of communism.
and show us where top want to do that?
a land tax would be epicly retarded if govt owned it all.
If you can’t pay the land tax, it becomes a debt attached to your property. When you die, the government takes whatever is owing. If you owe the whole amount, they take your property. Get the idea?
they do the same with rates.
once again, theres a ubi to help pay the tax.
its there to encourage old folk to downsize (top even state this), if they want to stay in their large and highly taxed properties they cant afford then theyre stubborn dumbarses.
plus the govt takes the money from the sale, not seize the property. even if they did seize then they would sell to a new victim. its not communism you dumb fuck!
im not supporting tops plan by any means, just pointing out the dumbfuckery in the scaremongering. alot is really misrepresenting it and just proving how fucking thick and low iq dumb cunt kiwis are.
most kiwis are that fucking dumb they deserve this shit
Sadly, yes.

FUEL IMPORTS MAKE US -$1.2 BLN WORSE OFF
Our July exports were up almost +14% above year ago levels and up +$881 mln, pushed up by strong rises for meat (+$251 mln), dairy (+117 mln), fruit (+$91 mln) and aluminium (+$59 mln). Plus there was a gratifying rise in many other products as well. But this was all overshadowed by what we had to pay for fuel (+$932 mln). That meant our imports rose +$1.187 bln from a year ago and up by +28%. The net result is a much worse trade balance for the month at -$1.949 bln, the largest in two years and far above the 2025 equivalent of -$762 mln. Trump’s Iran adventure has put us in a net-worse trade position despite the rising export efforts.
you cant blame trump for that here on ysb, ive spent months doing that but Trump Dick Suckers have a big cry and say it isnt so.
reserves are still going down down down, theres still a looming oil crisis and the oil prices being held artificially low are just making it worse.
the usa reserves are now under 300million, theyve known for decades the infrastructure gets put at risk of collapse and becoming unusable if pumped below 300million barrels but trump is desperate as fuck to survive the midterms and cant risk massive fuel inflation if they halt the draining of the reserves.
then theyve gotta refill the reserves at some stage so thatll put pressure on the markets at a later date so likely prolonged higher prices.
this will be one of trumps many failures he leaves as a legacy.
im hoping the epic market crash happens under his watch aswell, it will be named after him and will be immortalized forever as “the biggest crash the world has ever seen”(just imagine that being said in trumps voice).
The plan is taking shape. One step at a time… Trump wasn’t resting while “Auto Pen” was in the presidency. The US controls the Strait of Hormuz.

Have you wished Bomber a speedy recovery from his injuries and donated to his begathon?
im thinking of donating him a toaster that he can use in the bath. im a very thoughtful and generous guy.

That is the same system the turkeys use to bypass the meter in growrooms. All good until something goes wrong & then it isn’t.
who would ever cut the nuetral line on their power meter and hook it up to a light switch in order to turn the meter off and on….. mates cowshed and house was rigged up like that, he shat himself when they came to install smartmeters. he frayed the wires and made it look like a rat had a munch.
smart meter fucks that method now, they can sense load on the incoming line and send a fault detection if its too large and not going through the meter. lots of aus growrooms got busted this way.
large neo magnets worked best on the old meters and alot safer.
get fucked, basic facts shit all over your fake news/propaganda junk posting.
🤣🤣🤣
