Rotorua man says spinal surgery in Turkey gave him his life back after 25 years of pain“Good as” was Adrian Crothers’ standard answer if anyone asked if he was okay.
But he wasn’t.
He was battling intense back pain from a 25-year-old rugby injury. He was bent over, felt “crippled”, had lost his quality of life and was hitting the painkillers and relief remedies hard.
He spent about three years going through the various stages of the health system, including battling ACC to pay for his surgery.
His personal health insurance wouldn’t cover a pre-existing condition. Without ACC, he was faced with a long wait in the public system or paying an estimated $175,000 to have surgery in a private hospital.
That was until his wife, Rachael, “did some googling”.
“He was in so much pain that day and was groaning at the end of the couch,” Rachael said.
“So I Googled, ‘Can you have orthopaedic surgery overseas?’”
One of the first options that came up was in Turkey.
Adrian said he could not believe the efficiency in Turkey. Waits between doctors, specialists and MRIs were minutes, not the months he had faced at home.
They said the surgery he had was less invasive than that recommended in New Zealand.
Adrian said he knew his back was healed the next day, even through the pain from surgery.

Their incompetence in communication, despite me ringing back, to some city centre, relaying out the exact circumstances, & what had to be done, well prior before their appointment set up.
They had neither the gear, or the expertise to do what was required when I turned up at their very expensive decked out carvings etc. around their building.
Proving costly to me time wise in waiting.
Fortunately it was resolved on the same day by a proper “medical centre” as I pushed, demanded they ring that medical centre, that fortunately had a gap of time at the end of the day to set things right for me.

A social media podcaster who brought down a Destiny Church member’s candidacy with New Zealand First has defended releasing damaging private messages and says it’s up to police to decide whether he committed blackmail.
George Ngatai QSM resigned as a candidate this week after claiming he has been the victim of extortion threats from Martel Wikeepa – known as Shubz – who has hosted a show on Ngatai’s Radio Aotearoa since April before being stood down this week.
The suspension came after Shubz released messages showing Ngatai had been courting a meeting with Act leader David Seymour and Opportunity leader Qiulae Wong, despite vying to represent Winston Peters’ party in the Papakura seat at November’s general election.
Speaking to the Herald, Shubz said he acted out of frustration after Ngatai failed to honour promises around payment for months of work at the station and potential ownership shares.
He said he felt he’d been taken advantage of and admitted sending a message saying he would take the “nuclear option” and “tank” Ngatai’s candidacy if the businessman refused to honour those commitments.

National’s decision to stick with Christopher Luxon as leader appears at odds with the wider public, with more voters saying the caucus got it wrong than right.
The latest RNZ-Reid Research poll gauged voters’ views on the National Party’s emergency caucus meeting two weeks ago, where a majority of MPs opted to keep Luxon as leader, foiling a bid to replace him.
Asked whether that was the right call, 45.4% of respondents said no, compared with 36.8% who said yes.
Another 17.8% were unsure.

The bad blood in the coalition at present is unlike anything else we’ve seen over the way the Prime Minister handled the proposed ban on social media for under 16-year-olds.
It is not simply a verbal swipe by Winston Peters about Luxon’s inexperience. This involves both Peters and Deputy Prime Minister and Act leader David Seymour, and what amounts to an erosion of trust in Luxon.
Both are white-hot livid about the ban having been introduced to Parliament as a government bill against their wishes, especially when there were alternatives to the action Luxon took.
The bad blood goes to the heart of how a coalition should be run, and that is not on the basis that might is right and that National should get its way simply because it has greater numbers than Act or New Zealand First.
If that were the case, National would determine all policy matters except those mentioned in the coalition agreement.
But there is no doubt that Luxon has breached the unwritten rules of MMP, which are that coalition partners are partners and not rubber stamps. Yes, Act and New Zealand First have invoked the agree-to-disagree clauses of their coalition agreements – but in the past, that has been done by negotiation, and willingly.
