Another Reason For Brics ?

The purpose of this ship is to bypass the Suez Canal and the costs associated with reducing the time to get hydrocarbons to their Asian markets. By going around the Arctic, sailing time and distance are reduced by 2/3.

Icebreakers are a special class of ships that are designed to break even the thickest ice. They allow you to explore the most inhospitable regions of the world – the ice-covered waters of the Arctic. For a ship to be considered an icebreaker, it must have three features that most conventional ships lack: power, a reinforced hull, and a special shape for breaking the ice. This allows such vessels to move through pack ice or frozen waterways.

  1. Yes , well wait until the Environmental Dept decides (rightly), that breaking all the ice for this purpose is actually fucking stupid. and is driven by greed and fear rather than good environmental out comes.

Its just stupid at this point in time and hands power to the Asians.

    For what reason.

They just might find oil on their own continent when it suits them. China does have oil but doesn’t mine it like it doesn’y mine anything much other than coal. Better to use others resources until they run out. 500 year plan.
Given that China and Japan have declining populations even more reason to call it stupid and Russia already has pipelines from its oil fields to China.
Another one won’t make any difference to the ocean and super breaker will.

  2. Won’t someone think of the Polar Bears and them getting run down by a polluting, oil burning, Ice Breaker?

On second thoughts, don’t bother thinking about them, Al Gore told us they would all be dead by 2013, so I guess there are none now left around to worry about.

  3. You could probably break a shitload of ice for the cost of going through a canal. No idea of the charges for the Suez but I recall watching a video where a ticket through the Panama Canal cost upwards of $750,000 for a Panmax box boat & about a million for a passenger liner.

Ancient Hooligan has expertise in this field & may be more up to speed on the costs.
