The Latest Sign That Consumers Just Don’t Want Electric Vehicles

In yet another blow to the Biden administration’s attempts to force a “green” (read: extremely not green) energy “transition” as part of the president’s crusade to “end” fossil fuels, the Hertz rental car company has announced that it’s abandoning its electric vehicles and pivoting back to gasoline-powered cars.

On Thursday, Hertz said it was selling off 20,000 of its electric vehicles —roughly one-third of its EV fleet — and will replace them with gas-powered vehicles in its for-rent fleet. As Axios reported, the company cited the high cost of repairing its EVs as part of its decision to pivot back to good ol’ gasoline vehicles.

As Axios’ report reminded, “[t]he move marks an abrupt reversal by Hertz, which in 2022 announced plans to buy 165,000 EVs from Tesla and Volvo unit Polestar” and said the move means “a $245 million loss” for Hertz.

In 2023, Hertz boasted that it was being recognized by the Biden administration for its “efforts to expand access to electric vehicles across the country,” claiming demand for EV rentals was “growing.”

This morning, @Hertz was recognized by The White House for our efforts to expand access to electric vehicles across the country. Demand for EV rentals is growing and we’re here to help our customers electrify their travels. #HertzLetsGo #HertzEV https://t.co/rLJa0lmHG8

In a report on the decision, Reuters noted that Hertz’s pivot away from plug-ins is “another sign that EV demand has cooled,” undercutting the company’s plan to have a quarter of its fleet made up of electric vehicles.

Hertz, however, is hardly the first major company to end up with buyer’s remorse for launching into EVs. As Townhall reported in December, Ford dealt a blow to Biden’s energy “transition” pipe dream when it announced that it was “cutting planned production of its all-electric F-150 ‘Lightning’ pickup truck ‘roughly in half’ in 2024” amid “billion-dollar losses, inflated costs, high interest rates, and lagging demand” for EVs.

Much like Hertz, the pivot by Ford was “a major reversal after the automaker significantly increased plant capacity for the electric vehicle in 2023,” said CNBC.

  1. Customers don’t want the EV chargers at the shop front door for safety reasons, either!
    How do you exit shop?
Nor do they want Mitre 10 Mega, giving out free charge of EV to customers!
You going to to give a discount to ICE customers?

  2. Did you watch a 3D movie last year, or the year before?
    No ?
They are a fad that pops up every so often. There was a burst in the 1950s, early 1980s and again around 2010.
If goo-mint was subsidising them they would be around…. as costly, loss making ventures.

Same with selectrix cars. Back in early 1900s, in the 1920s, some occasional independent attempts. They work for fork lifts and golf buggys.
Other attempts like compressed air cars, hydrogen cars. Not working. Remember the LPG and CNG cars of the 1980s.

If OIL was so BAD why is the USA continuously fighting wars over it. ?

The rest of it is a deliberate attempt by the globalist scum to take out ICE vehicles and remove peoples movement.
The dumb fucks buy into it. Recent graduates will buy into it because they have just had 16 to 17 years of wall to wall socialism (Age 5 to 21/22; even before, in kindy) from left wing teachers (anyone not left wing is squeezed out, been happening over 40 years now)

The supposed intro of electric vehicles, wind farms, and the killing of farms and food production is all tied in to an evil agenda.
The EU is always the laboratory for these .
    Mainly German driven.

AND many of your politicians have bought into it .

    • Personally it is progress to use electricity, just not in the current form or method.

In the future, if you wanted to pop over to Mars for breakfast and have lunch on Jupiter station, your (space) vehicle is not going to powered by fossil fuels, but by electricity of some form.

It is the way the move to EV is being pushed, and the stonewalling of nuclear generators that would allow electricity generation to be ramped up, and with mini generators ramped up right where the demand is.

  3. Insurance premiums and amount of bus fires in the UK are a clear indicator these vechiles of any size are not for for purpose.

  4. I’m going to stick my neck out, way out!

We love our Nissan LEAF electric car. Enough that we bought a second one.

Obviously EV’s are not for everyone but works well for the wife and I. We are in our mid 70’s, live in Whangarei and don’t have to travel far to do the normal things such as groceries, etc.

But when we want to, we can drive all the way to Auckland without having to stop to charge.

Charging the EV is cheap compared to buying petrol.

    Maintenance costs have been negligible.
