Yesterdays contribution to Have Your Say by fairydust, raised an interesting concept. Are golliwogs banned from sale here in New Zealand?
A quick duckduckgo search showed none for sale on trade me. However they do sell a pattern book so you can make your own. Also found a rug/quilt with golliwog toys on it for sale.
Broadening my search, I found this stuff story about the visiting SJW’s complaining about the shop on Waiheke selling golliwogs. Good on the shop owner for refusing to back down and continue to sell them.
An Amazon search found no golliwogs for sale. Ebay had plenty for sale, some just across the ditch.
But the best source was Allibaba. This is what I found.
I can remember having a golliwog as a kid. It wasn’t a favourite, I much preferred my teddy bear.
So no, the sale of golliwogs is not banned here or any other country. Like anything else, if you really want something then it is available somewhere.
That’s the power of the internet, and we must guard it’s freedom to the best of our abilities.
