    This is perhaps an odd question, but as MOST countries in the world (Even some of the poorest in Africa) have at least some Gold Reserves (Invariably held at either the Bank of England or in Fort Knox), does New Zealand (At one time gold producer of considerable size), actually have ANY gold reserves, and, if so, what is the quantity that is held and where?

    • Komata, some years ago, in another life I was the President of a Western BOP Rotary Club and got the Chief Geologist from Oceania Gold, an Australian Company who owns the Martha Mine in Waihi along to speak.

      He advised that the Martha Mine at Waihi was, (if I remember correctly) the 8th largest Gold and Silver producing mine in the world.

      But what got my attention was his comment that New Zealand had far more mineral wealth in the ground per square kilometre than anything comparable in Australia. He also stated that New Zealand would never benefit from it as the Greens here will do anything to prevent it’s extraction. A pity, he said, as the benefit to this country would be immense.

      The Gold & Silver refined from Matha went then to Australia. As to the country’s Gold Reserves, after this Government has finished it will be in the ounces, not Tonnes as it should be.

        I agree completely with the assessment you heard and (Also from another life; the details don’t matter) am very familiar with the industry.

        The comment about the greens is an accurate one, and in that regard it is useful to be aware that the greens attitude could most politely be described as being one of total self-interest, and has absolutely NOTHING to do with what is underground, but everything to do with the very profitable production of Coromandel Gold (No, not the mineral). It has been that way for decades, largely as a result of the arrival (in the mid 1960’s) of various American fugitives / draft dodgers from the Vietnam war with their predeliction for grass, and it is THAT which prompts the ‘anti-mining’ protests, and then only because the mining operations get in the way of the cash crop.

        FWIW: There is definitely more gold and silver underground on the Coromandel than was ever taken out, BUT, the cost of extraction is the key, since (For example), if gold is worth $100 an ounce (It isn’t; it’s far higher) and it’s going to cost $300 to extract and process it, then it simply isn’t worth the effort. The greens only serve to ADD to the cost, as their petty self-serving sabotage of machinery and illegal invasions of legally-granted leases slows things down and also requires the implementation of security in various forms; all requiring expenditure of funds that could be far better used for exploration nd extraction.

        As a result the area stagnates and declines and only the gweens get the profit, while all the while bleatin about how concerned they are about protecting ‘The Environment’ (But only for THEIR economic gain).

        It’s a crazy situation and unless things change and the all the weeds wither and die, it is unlikely that anything will ever change. The ‘Counter culture’ is now too well-ingrained, and those who rail against the ‘filthy capitalist west’ are in fact doing very nicely thank you and have absolutely NO problem with being exactly the self-same ‘filthy capitalists’ they so piously-decry.

        The contradiction and irony of such actions is, of course, not realised.

    • Govt would need to be solvent to purchase gold. With Robbo running up huge debts and wasting our generational capital on virtue signalling projects that have and are failing, no chance. Many private companies are debt laden zombies living on cheap re-financing. That option just ended. Gold reserves are too easily pissed away by panicking politicians, as their currencies run. NZ has one of the worst exposures as we have much foreign debt, but few wealth generating hard assets on the books – coal, oil, minerals, industrial exports. Tourism is fickle. China owns many offshore assets throughout the pacific. What does NZ own? Gold reserves would only come from a position of financial strength. NZ hanging on by it’s fingernails. Delete the choking regulations, and NZ would boom. It has a culture of self sufficiency.
