    Robert MacCulloch: The case against the Reserve Bank and the Finance Minister
    “OPINION

    The Reserve Bank has a formal objective to keep inflation in the range of one to three percentage points, as specified by the Remit for the Monetary Policy Committee, which was signed and “agreed by” the Governor and Finance Minister.

    This range constitutes the official definition of “maintaining stability in the general level of prices” in the RBNZ Act. However, both signatories to the remit have gone and wilfully ripped up their sworn aim.
    Let’s build the prosecution’s case. Exhibit A is that the defendants already admit it. At the last meeting of the Bank’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC), members confessed that “annual consumer price inflation is expected to peak around 7 per cent in the first half of 2022”.

    Are the shocks hitting us short to medium term? No.

    The bank says, “A broad range of indicators are highlighting … ongoing inflation pressures.”

    Has the misconduct of monetary policy, which has been inciting the inflationary breach, ended? No. The bank says that the Official Cash Rate (OCR) “is stimulatory at its current level”.

    Not only has NZ’s inflation target been ignored, but those responsible for achieving it are still pouring gasoline on the fire.

    Exhibit B comes from Professor John Taylor, inventor of the “Taylor Rule”. That rule is a simple formula explaining how a Central Bank can quell an inflationary shock. It has proved a robust guideline when setting Official Cash Rates around the world.

    The rule states that an increase in the OCR of more than one percentage point is required when inflation increases by one percentage point. The reason is to ensure that real interest rates go up to reduce borrowing.

    Without a rise in real rates, debt-financed spending can continue to fuel inflation.

    So what’s been going on in NZ? Annual inflation, measured at March 2021, was 1.5 per cent. Annual inflation at March 2022 was 6.9 per cent. In other words, inflation has risen by more than five percentage points this past year.

    However, the RBNZ has only increased the OCR by a little over one percentage point over the same period, sending short-term real rates deeply negative.

    The Taylor Rule is powerful evidence that there has been no intention, whatsoever, of our authorities to meet their obligation of keeping inflation on target.

    Exhibit C is NZ’s record-low unemployment rate, which stands at 3.2 per cent.

    Unemployment sharply increasing would have been a justification for holding back on steep hikes in the OCR to contain inflation. Yet the MPC says “employment is above its maximum sustainable level”.

    In their defence, the Governor of the RBNZ and Finance Minister have claimed others are doing the same.

    “Global consumer price inflation is high, well above most central banks’ targets”, argues the Monetary Policy Committee.

    Attempts to present the situation abroad as being the same as in NZ are misleading.

    Although the US Federal Reserve also has a mandate of “stable prices”, these words are not defined in terms of an inflation target that has ever been “agreed” by the Fed Chair and US Treasury Secretary.

    For most of its history, the Fed baulked at providing even its own internal definition.

    A target did emerge when Ben Bernanke was chairman but the Fed subsequently changed it into one that was intentionally vague and ambiguous. Targets are not all alike, contrary to the MPCs insinuation.

    In stark contrast, our RBNZ has no discretion to play around with the meaning of price stability. The point of the explicit inflation target signed off between the RBNZ Governor and Finance Minister has been to “provide a clear agreement between policymakers, thereby limiting the scope for discretionary policy actions”, to quote Adrian Orr, writing for OECD Policy Studies in 1994.

    So what has been driving OCR decisions? Populism.

    After keeping the cash rate so low for so long and embarking on a $53 billion Quantitative Easing (QE) programme, the bank is now in panic mode. It is panicking at the prospect of a full-on policy reversal that will highlight past mistakes and provoke widespread debt distress.

    Those having trouble paying back their mortgages in the next few years can blame our RBNZ Governor and Finance Minister. They encouraged a borrowing binge to buy houses at wildly inflated prices, financed by dirt cheap credit, turning a blind eye to the breach of the target to which they mutually agreed and not learning the lessons of the Global Financial Crisis in 2008.

    The RBNZ was once lauded around the world for making NZ exceptional. It pioneered inflation targeting. We became the gold standard of monetary credibility.

    Now our hard-fought success and huge reputation built up over 30 years lie in ruins.

    Exhibits A, B and C reveal how the RBNZ and Finance Minister have overseen the trashing of their “agreed” inflation target.

    The official defence is that other Central Banks are just as bad. That’s not true. Not one of them operates under the same laws as ours.

    The US Fed Chairman and Treasury Secretary have not broken any agreement. By comparison, our RBNZ Governor and Finance Minister have driven a truck through the single most important agreement underpinning our economic security since 1989.“

  6. I enjoy watching the cycling on Sky of various tour races around Europe. Watching last night the commentators talked about the number of cyclists that have been suffering from repeated viral illnesses among the peloton riders from the various teams – George Bennett N.Z is one, has been getting sick for a few months now, recovers then comes down again with another one.
    AS an armchair “expert” how about all their immune systems are compromised with vaccinations and boosters and with the continual close contact amongst all the varying teams with lots of different contact points there is a continuing petri dish of various combinations waiting to infect.
    As an aside I notice that two professional cyclists have died in their sleep, on March 9th & 14th, while an Italian rider crossed the finish line after riding the first stage of the Volta a Catalunya in Spain on Monday, March 21. He suddenly collapsed. It was reported that he suffered from cardiac arrest. Medical staff got his heart going again with a defibrillator.

      As has been pointed out, buy & sell in the same market then the state of that market is irrelevant. I think it’s also fair to say that those who indebt themselves to buy anything without an adequate failsafe will suffer badly if financial markets turn against them, and it’s inevitable some carnage is coming. What will be interesting to see though, is if the banks and lenders follow the early 90’s rash of mortgagee sales, or find another mechanism to preserve their asset. Perhaps a visit to the WEF website & reviewing property ownership within The Great Reset may be enlightening?

He stated the tax loopholes have been closed by tightening laws over the past 20 years so everyone (including both individual rich and corporates) are paying the required tax on income as required under the law.

          Gst is a value add tax, so sale price minus purchase price and any maintance/improvement costs = taxable portion.

          A cgt dosent take into account the home owner has spent x amount on their property to increase its value so in effect its a double whammy.
          Who the hell would spend 100k+ of already taxxed income to renovate a house to get taxxed on that improvement later on when they sell?

  30. I downloaded the xls spreadsheet from the Ministry of Health and crunched some figures
    Last week they managed to jab 13,911 total in 7 days.
    The life of this experimental drug is 6 months.
    So from 30 January to 17 April they managed to jab 1.583 million
    In their jab purchases over same period they purchased 3,305,290 jabs
    they had at least 1,722,241 jabs surplus as of 17 April. from that period.
    If they continue to jab at same rate, will take 125 weeks to deplete this stock.
    The 3.34% wastage is going to look like a tiny pimple in the scheme of things unless they up the jab rate dramatically.
    You cannot accurately read how many they say they have in stock but it is North of 3.5 Million
    there latest daily jab figures are a miniscule 355.
    Yesterday they announce they are buying more supplies from a Nordic country, what are they going to do with all this unused unwanted shit.
    Number of purchases become virtually irrelevant when you have an expiry date and no uptake, there is going to be a massive bill for much that will be thrown away and depending on the agreement, it will just keep coming regardless.

      1. The exemption will be ‘personalised’ by a QR code which will have to be carried at all times and shown in order to enter shops, malls etc without a mask. The QR code will carry your name and DOB etc.

      2. A law will be brought out which will force all businesses, shops, malls and public facilities to scan anyone not wearing a nappy over their face.

      3. All existing exemption cards will become null and void and non-compliance on the part of businesses which allow unmasked people in without scanning will incur heavy fines.

      This is the next stage towards forcing everybody to carry electronic ID at all times. This is their goal.

      The horsefaced cunt and her minions don’t give a fuck about the actual mask exemptions. That’s not the point. Their aim is to link every single person into a digital ID and this is just another step on the way.

    Last week, on Monday, a mother I have treated for a number of years started telling me about her 9 years old son complaining of chest pains, breathlessness, constant tiredness and his heart feeling funny. He was undergoing multiple tests from the doctor and hospital, including bloods and ECG, and the whole family was feeling worried and traumatised. There was no previous medical history. They only got him jabbed so he could keep doing his sport.

    Tax officials are proposing changes which would increase the tax burden on a lot of small businesses.

    They would greatly expand the scope of a relatively obscure part of the tax laws — the personal services income attribution rule.

    It was introduced 20 years ago to deal with cases where people who are in substance employees, set up a company to sell their services to a single client — often the Government — so as to be taxed at the company rate rather than their personal marginal rate.

    This was after the previous Labour Government introduced a new top personal income tax rate of 39 per cent, increasing the incentive to arbitrage off the difference between it and the company rate. It is an issue which has arisen again, with the reintroduction of a top rate of 39 per cent on income above $180,000.
