      • Bypass (Brave) New World franchises. “Locally owned” by tyrants. Bought a lettuce in the local dairy the other day. It had it’s own tupperware, which i left at the store, and was locally grown. Ha, it had its own genesis story. Encourage local trade. Ask and yea might receive. Our small glasshouse of tomatoes is still cropping hard. I don’t think the “we’re all gunna starve” fear porn from artificially elevated prices has any teeth.

        • Beorn our tomatoes are still booming too usually theyre frosted or going mouldy by now, if youve got surplus cheery tomatoes throw em in a dehydrator, they go super sweet with intense flavour and last a long time.
          Wifey picked a whole washing basket of the things last weekend and turned em into sauces n soup, this weekend the dehydrator is coming out be 10-15kg left on the vines!

          • You bastard! My tomatoes died about five minutes after I went on holiday at Christmas. I don’t want to jump to conclusions as to what caused their demise but I suspect forgetting to turn on the watering system may have contributed.

      • BRG, both Woolworth and Countdown are money grabbing arseholes.

        I bought a pile of tomatoes yesterday at $3.99 Kg from the travelling Fruit & Vege man who covers King Country and lower Waikato towns every week, i.e. he sets up on a specific day in a different town.

        The Chinamans fruit and veges are absolute top class quality and are of reasonable price.

        Countdown and Foodstuffs have substantial grower supply & pricing contracts, the Chinaman not so much if any, but his prices are always reasonable.

        How Countdown can charge $6.99 and look you in the eye is breathtaking. A difference of $3.00 per KG between one of the biggest retailers in the country and a small retailer who has to get up a sparrow fart every morning, drive substantial miles to a different town and have his business up and running by 6.00am can’t be justifies.

        The Supermarkets are just dishonest & greedy and the Commerce Commission reckons they are basically OK. Bollocks.

  20. This is a bit creepy. I have a facebook account which I haven’t posted to for at least 10 years. I occasionally look at fb pages, some of the links ( the ones that actually work posted by Viking for example). Facebook still email suggested groups to join on a regular basis. Recently they sent me a link for users of Eriba caravans, a relatively obscure german made caravan. It just so happens that we have been looking at importing one of these from the UK So it seems that fb know what I am looking at on my computer, even though I am not using fb to do it.
    Is there any other explanation? I certainly don’t buy coincidence.

      [1] Probably your phone picked up you discussing it with someone, your phone is lined to your address either through geo tracking or more likely through your wifi.

      [2] Or more obvious, what you browse or search on the internet is captured via the FB – Google data exchange.

      [3] Or even more obvious through your browser cookies that record where you have been and said cookies can be accessed by other apps and websites you visit.

      On [2] some years back I was tracking what outbound links my browser made, and opening up my browser (and homepage, which was Google) there would be a number of links to Facebook. Which was concerning because I didn’t have a Facebook account. Well at least not one I created. As recorded in the media, most people have a “shadow” Facebook account, even if they do not have a legitimate account.

      Apparently nowadays, browsers do not make connections to FB anymore, they just use and co-operate with Google / Amazon etc to share and exchange data.

      On [1] myself or friends have experienced talking about a subject, either on a phone call or at home, and next ads pop up on the internet related to that subject.

      As Lou Gerstner, the former head of IBM was quoted as saying, (or words to effect of) “In the future people will pay a small fortune to keep their data private and off the internet.”

      You have to ask yourself why the heads of several data management companies don’t store their personal or IP data on the internet, a server, or even a PC. You also have to ask yourself why former execs of the NSA tell people not to put their data in the Cloud.

  32. The new inner city living / working style.

    There is a new development on Taranaki Street in Wellington on what used to be a large Ford Dealership’s land. They have been building these “dog boxes” for the last couple of years and we have not been able to work out what they were. They are two stories high and are in rows of connected premises. The rows go back about 4-5 deep. There is no communal area with trees or gardens anywhere in the middle. Those on the street front have their doors literally opening onto the foot path.
    It turns out they are designed to be a version of the Asian style shop houses or work and live premises, or at least those with a street frontage are. They all look to be the same size.

        • I was listening to Local Government NZ head talking to Leah and Mark before and was thinking of texting them exactly what you said Ed.
          So many politicians forget about the LG Act and ever since Clark changed it to allow Councils to do whatever they like the emphasis went off the key structural core issues and on to feel good projects .
          Change that Act and it would go a long way to solving the problem.
