    • Cool. That the simple wheel and chariot meme swept down from Mesopotamia and conquered all. Alexander the Great was tutored by Aristotle (Gandalf). I recently consumed a few hours on YouTube looking at the fall of the Bronze Age Empires, pre-Alexander. The Sea People seemed to be getting scapegoated. The Bronze Age peoples lost their source of Tin out of Afghanistan (supply chains too long – ref: China builds everything) and then commerce floundered, and the whole thing collapsed and all their great big empire kingdoms vanished. The claims to superiority due to antiquity, bloodlines, (sperm of abraham) and links to vanished Empires all seems a bit fake and weak. Juvenal [Satires] on relying on bloodlines: “Shaky indeed is the prop that relies on the deeds of others to hold it up. More likely the whole edificie will come tumbling down.” These guys respected their ancestors but were driven to exceed them, in their own time, by their own deeds.

    • A labour of love. Was there much on the material that the coins were made from? I saw a mention of silver in some coin descriptions, but other materials? Has anyone in the region had their DNA done, that would be interesting and might back legend up.
      Might I suggest that on page 2 with your first reference to Alexander, that you put Alexander the Great and I think that you put Alexander in brackets after that and then just refer to him as Alexander. I am happy to be corrected.

      On p8 it is interesting that they refer to ‘first ancestors’ as if nothing before counted.

      P13. There is a superfluous ‘and’ before a had.

      P32 is it struck or strike?

      You will have a Lovely time with other enthusiasts and it was an easy read of an unknown subject and could well capture an imagination.

    Thanks for the share and for the PDF; It’s a very interesting document on a very interesting subject. I thoroughly-enjoyed reading it .

    A couple of questions / suggestions as a result: If this document is going to be printed for distribution to the Numismatic Society membership, have you given thought to both numbering the document’s pages, and providing sequentially-numbered sources for the numerous maps, quotes and images that appear within it, either as Footnotes (At the bottom of the individual page on which the quote / image / photo or map appears) or through the creation of a ‘Notes’ section (Aka ‘Endnotes’) placed after the Appendix but before the Bibliography?

    I ask this as an Historian who was taught ‘If it doesn’t have a reference / source it doesn’t exist’ and who would (for example) be interested in reading Tod’s ‘Annals and Antiquities of Rajast’han or the Central and Western Rajpoot States of India (1829-32’), but in the absence of such details as Where it was published, By whom and When, and also a relevant page number, would find that obtaining a copy of that volume to be very difficult to do, especially as National and University Libraries (in both NZ and overseas) tend to need as much information as they can, to help with their searching. Although the volume I quoted is of personal interest, other readers of your dissertation will also want to ‘learn more’ about some item within the document which has caught their attention, and so anything which will help them find the information that your writings have piqued their interest in, will be extremely useful, and indeed encourage their own research.

    You have the information, IMHO it’s now a matter of ‘getting it out there’ and to spread it as far as possible.

    Providing some sort of reference will definitely help.

    An entry for your own document (If being quoted in another publication), could, for example, look like this:

    Alan. L.T. Speedy, ‘Indo-Greek Coinage and Kharoṣṭhī Script’, (Auckland: A.L. Speedy, 2022),

    If YOUR document was being quoted-from, it would have the appropriate page number (if the page is actually numbered) attached, and be assigned an appropriate sequential ‘Note’ number.

    Please note what I have suggested is NOT a criticism of your narrative and writing skills, but is based-upon personal experience (Albeit in another field of historical research) and is made to make an already-excellent document even better, to enhance it’s ‘Authority’ as a ‘Document of Reference’ (And inter alia YOUR reputation as a “Person of Authority on his subject; a ‘Go-to’ if you will), and so-help whomever might want to pursue their own searches/ research after reading what you have written.

    I trust that you will take it that way.

      I am working in PPXT Powerpoint as this is principally a presentation at a conference to both amateur historians (the coin people who need entertaining) and the university academic staff.

      They may want an article from me in which case I would find a better way to attribute and reference material. At this stage I am considering putting it all in the Bibliography (currently in alphabetic order by author).

      I have credited all my own photographs which I took in Pakistan 22 years ago.

      Do I need to worry about map sources?

          In respect of Agathocles/ Dikaios: To use an old phrase from the Raj (My age is showing), he seems to have ‘Gone native’, and surprisingly-quickly. Although it is quite likely that he was a ‘pot head’ we can, of course, never know with certainty that that was the case, BUT he certainly seems to have taken to the local ‘culture’ with considerable enthusiasm. ‘Drugs’ were an endemic part of the culture of course (The Kashmir grows great Poppies), so the answer is probably ‘Yes’ although probably used ‘For religious purposes only’, rather than as a ‘Hippy’ as we currently understand the term.

          BTW (And to emphasise my original question), the lack of printed page numbers made locating the page a bit difficult, although my PC eventually told that the images were on page 29.

          Although you have not done-so in the paper, dating the ‘evolution’ of the coinage (over 10 years?) would IMHO be an interesting exercise / study, as it would no-doubt show the ‘Indianisation’ of an increasingly-isolated and aging Greek, who had concluded that he would / could never get back home and was ‘resigned’ to ‘making the best of the situation’.

          Not sure if it answers your question, but it’s an interesting proposition.

              Thanks for the reply; I’m sure that you will find the study of the ‘evolution’ to be quite revealing, especially if it can be shown to be linked to (And influenced-by) whatever-other empires were in the vicinity (They were always coming and going), although the apparent 10 year time span is somewhat small.

              If nothing else, researching that will give you something to do on a wet day when you can’t get out to serenade the neighbourhood with ‘The devil’s own instrument’.

              ‘Culturally’, and given the passing of time, while Agathocles might have initially had the usual good intentions of ‘Improving the lot of the natives by the introduction of what HE perceived as ‘superior’ cultural practices (Think of the British in various parts of the Empire, even in New Zealand), he was ultimately (IMHO) pushing a ‘doomed’ wheelbarrow, as the locals (if only by virtue of numbers), would inevitably realise that they only had to play a ‘waiting’ game before he (and the ‘Greek Ideas’ he represented / supported) would be die and without his support (By both ‘fair means and foul; again think of the British; especially in India) , the ‘old’, ‘Former’, culture would reassert itself and the ‘New’ culture would be absorbed, modified, then called their own.

              In that context, Agathocles, was merely (Albeit unknowingly) following ‘established’ imperial practice, which can be summarised as ‘Empires come, Empires go, the ‘original’ culture remains’.

              Thanks for asking about my background. It’s nothing startling. Put simply, ‘Formally’ it’s a Degree and various other bits of largely-useless, academic-type paper gained over many years, and an insatiable curiousity which has led me to into some interesting situations and enabled me to meet some fascinating people, and to do some very interesting research on a variety of subjects as a result. My own particular ‘Severe interest’ is the history of the Coromandel Peninsula’s goldmines, which is fascinating stuff should one be so-inclined. (Most people aren’t)while linguistics and language-development are also a subject that I find of interest.

              As I said, nothing startling, but definitely lots of fun.

        As a rough guide, EVERYTHING should be sourced / referenced (as previously-noted, ‘If it doesn’t have a reference / source it doesn’t exist’), and inevitably (and again, based-upon personal experience), sometime, somewhere (and when you DEFINITELY least expect it, someone will want to find that map and when they can’t, YOUR name (As a ‘person of Authority’) will be damaged; it only takes something very minor and can be VERY long-lasting.

        Definitely reference the maps.

        They’re an absolute ‘pain’ to do, but as an example (anbd again using the previously-0mentioned MHRA style) , herewith a reference(as a footnote) that I wrote-up in respect of Karangahake:

        ‘Paeroa. [map]. 1:50,000, NZLITSTopo50series, BC.35 1st.ed. Wellington, Land Information New Zealand, 2009’.

        In respect of ‘Referencing’ : While I use Modern Humanities Research Association (MHRA) referencing for all my work (The footnote I wrote in the previous post was written in that style), there are several different ones available (herewith a link which could be useful https://falconediting.com/en/blog/important-english-academic-style-guides), with either ‘Chicago’ or ‘APA’ seeming to be the most popular. Have a look through them, choose the one which appeals to you AND STICK TO IT for everything you write from now on.! A Google search for your chosen style should bring-up more details. Although it doesn’t appear on that list, I personally use MHRA as it works well for me and conveys the information I wish to provide to whomever reads my work.

        I hope that this helps.

        In my earlier days of research, I would always read the abstract first to see the abbreviated form of what the research, or patents was about.
        Reading patents was a major interest of mine. Did you know seed companies have patents on genes?

A while back I was browsing one of my old school yearbooks from decades ago and I happened upon a little cartoon drawn by a student which would be rather politically incorrect today to say the least, but back then it clearly didn’t raise a single eyebrow.     • I closed my FB account years ago, so I’m not sure of the technicalities of how you would go about this, but if it were me I would:

      a) open a Telegram account (or similar) to connect with your real friends

      b) wait until your FB ban is over, then

      c) post or message for everyone to see “I was banned by FB for simply referring to a cartoon from 40 years ago. This is a totally unacceptable level of censorship and I will therefore be closing my FB account on (date). I will no longer be available to receive your disapproval on this platform.       • I’m close to doing it, Eurokiwi. But as many find with FB these days, it’s difficult to disengage. I keep in touch with so many friends and family solely through FB and Messenger, and I belong to several very good groups for various hobbies I’m involved in. I’m going to look to reduce it to a minimum though. I’m sick of it.

    The move seeks to address the difficulty India and other vulnerable developing countries are having in accessing adequate wheat supplies, India’s Directorate of Foreign Trade said in a government publication (pdf) on May 13.

    Citing “many factors” behind surging wheat prices, which have risen by more than 40 percent this year, the agency said the ban was effective immediately, with exceptions allowed for shipments backed by letters of credit issued prior to the May 13 notice and on a case-by-case basis at the request of countries “to meet their food security needs.”

      • Maori were (and still are) tribal. If asked what or who they were they would answer eg Ngati Porou or possibly the name of their hapu.

        The concept of nationhood didn’t exist & their borders were limited only by their ability to defend the land they claimed. There was no need for a name for what was a sparsely settled archipelago.
