My Uncle and Aunt had a holiday house in Taupo for 15+ years and decided to retire there.
That was about 20 years ago and being on holiday is different from living there.
Anyhow, they retired and bought a very nice house.
It was an eye opener for him as he had worked in the Terrace in Wellington for decades.
He saw the great unwashed with greater frequency than being on holiday where they blend in the shadows.
He heard from another local about how the great unwashed lined up at the ATMs at 3am to get their bene out as cash before any annoying auto payments like rent, power, fines etc were deducted by auto payment at 6am.
He said after 2 months, with more time on his hands, he went down there at 3.30am to observe this and said, yep, it’s true.
They can’t get up for a job interview at 10am but can get there at 3am to stick it to the man!
He did mumble and grumble about the local layabouts but it was based on observation of fact and not blind prejudice.
