Some fairly credible sources are reporting that a major investment bank is on the brink of collapse. Fingers are pointing towards Credit Suisse, whose credit default swaps are at distressed levels.

If these rumors are true then it could lead to an ugly open today in the world sharemarkets

Arderns speech points to the controlling legislation coming through the NZ Internal Affairs Department, which appears to be even more controlling than “Hate Speech” concepts and increasing by redefining what they will cover.
All will have nice cutesy language, but will bring controls about how one thinks, and what to think.

To me the trolling, hate speech controls, is a side show of sorts, even though it is a major symptom of the malaise in society.
To remove how one can find information, sources, data, knowledge, and then to be able to share, discuss, debate, it with others, like Russia, Ukraine, Covid, vaccines, injuries & deaths, crimes, education, Climate Change, etc., and so many other controlling interests develop further powers, from race based, health based, feminism, gender-ism, ageism, disablism, health & safety, etc., etc.,

  2. Simpleton1, it’s only a small jump from this crap they are pushing to actual surveillance devices in private homes along with a cashless economy and microchipping the population is the wet dream of leaders like Cnutface Ardern and her UN buddies ,I’m sure the 100s of millions that Microsoft are spending building an intelligence hub in our Country has something to do with this scheme as well.
NZ is a great place for experimenting with new surveillance technologies with our sheep like compliant population all baah, bahh, bahhing to be involved in it.

  3. Ed, a quick google shows that credit suisse has been in the crap for some time and points to today as a crucial day for the market but also that oct 27 is the day that will likely be the final nail in the coffin due to some reporting obligations due that day.

Im not up with all that stuff but i suspect youd have to look at several other big players and see how theyre posititioned, if its just credit suisse thats done dodgies and having defaults its ripple effect may be minimal but if several others arent strong or teetering then a domino effect could come into play.

  6. An Irish priest was transferred to Texas.
Father O’Malley rose from his bed one morning. It was a fine spring day in his new west Texas mission parish.
He walked to the window of his bedroom to get a deep breath of the beautiful day outside. He then noticed there was a jackass lying dead in the middle of his front lawn.
    He promptly called
    the local police station.
    The conversation went like this:
“Good morning. This is Sergeant Jones. How might I help you?”
“And the best of the day te yerself. This is Father O’Malley at St. Ann ‘s Catholic Church.
There’s a jackass lying dead in me front lawn and would ye be so kind as to send a couple o’yer lads to take care of the matter?”
Sergeant Jones, considering himself to be quite a wit and
recognizing the foreign accent, thought he would have a little fun with the good father, replied, “Well now Father, it was always my impression that you people took care of the last rites!”
There was dead silence on the line for a long moment…….
    Father O’Malley then replied:
“Aye,’tis certainly true; but we are also obliged to notify the next of kin first, which is the reason for me call.”😉

  7. Had a talk to my son about the roads. He has been road building for around 27 years and here is what he tells me.

There are a coupe of reasons for these roads breaking up. The biggest issue is the trucks. Previously the roads were built for 45 tonne trucks and trailers. The transport industry has managed to creep the trucks up to 60 tonne without compensation measures on many of the roads they travel The Kaimai’s are a good example.

My other son, who is a real engineer, tells me that whilst increasing the size and weight of these truck there is no compensating wheels on the ground so weight loading per wheel has increased to the max allowable. In a lot of cases the double wheels have been replaced with a single wheel with different tyres to corry the weight.
We all look at these 60 footers and wonder some days. I see them in our city streets that are made for cars and they just are destroying the road infrastructure. Worse the councils are making turning spaces smaller and not made for these fellows
We once had a road grading system that meant these monsters could only use certain roads. Thats all gone and they use whatever road suits the.
Now if you think that’s an issue look at the bridges on many of those roads. I have been saying for a number of years that one day one of the bridges in our district or over the kaimais to Matamata is going to collapse under the weight and stresses of a couple of these guys. They are old and not built for these loadings. The South Island had one just recently. It will happen.

Our roads are built with a flexible surface.
So you take all those factors and add a very dry summer which shrinks the subsoil, which when it rains, as it has this year, the foundation under the road weakens in spots. The water under pressure from beneath then perculates up under the seal and we have a soft spot. then we have a pothole. If you have seen a spring in your paddock or similar, that’s what is happening here.
Water under pressure pushing it’s way up to a lower pressure space.

While it remains wet it is very difficult to fix. and the process of the water looking to relieve the pressure its under will find another way out. another pothole.
    FWIW.

    • V2, a good analysis. Every day I see huge heavily laden B Doubles, parked up in the main street of Taumarunui heading from Kaitaia to Wellington and then on to Christchurch or Auckland heading to Wellington or Christchurch, waiting for a northbound truck and a driver change.

And then there are the huge number of logging trucks in this region.

These almost all have the “H” sign on them indicating they are in excess of 44,000kgs.

The main street of Taumarunui (State Highway 4) has virtually collapsed with the weight of these trucks with no sign of any repair work being undertaken.

Roads in this country were not built to take this extra weight and modern truck tyre construction.

NZTA said at he time truck weights were increased, that it was to reduce and slow down the number of large trucks on the road. They obviously did not take into account an expanding population base and hence more trucks.

      • Or the fact that rail doesn’t go to every backwater town in NZ!
Isn’t it lovely that the do filckies made in one factory anywhere in the country can be delivered to another customer in the black hills without having to be trans shipped six times and require twelve little vans for delivery!

        7

        0

        • Sooty, two things. Rail passes through Taumarunui but only stops here so that the Train Driver can take a leak in the Station Dunny, but it is too difficult for KiwiRail to stop to pick up paying customers.

There is a huge amount of forestry around here, Ongarue & Waimiha. The railway main trunk line passes immediately through these forests which are cutting now and continually on these existing forests for the next 25 years (and this before the next cut over comes) but KiwiRail will not put a rail siding in to pick up logs because, they claim (it would be a Health & Safety issue).

In the meantime hundreds of trucks per day in this region pick up the logs and the roads get knackered and taking revenue which KiwiRail could easily attract.

    • Thank you for that summation of the roads Viking as they are shocking, the pot holes are everywhere. Nice to actually know what is causing them. If they charge the excess weight trucks the costs will go up and up as is the want of the liarbor party. Interesting that there is a Whakawhatsoever in charge of our roads who never seem to do anything other than make a mess, they never fix anything. FFFFFJA worst government ever in the history of New Zealand.

      • Years ago when the top end of Tyndall Road in Gisborne was unsealed and potholed, a mad as a meat axe resident hired a tractor and blade and spent two days grading the road before the Council cottoned on to him. He had even booked up the tractor hire to the council so ended up facing criminal charges.

      • … blown out tyres and damaged the suspension on their vehicles. …
… she “smashed two wheel rims” ….
…. cost her $750 to fix wheel bearings caused by a large unavoidable pothole ….

….. “They said we take no responsibility for people hitting potholes and didn’t offer any compensation but they’re bloody quick to give you a parking ticket …

…. despite the [Tauranga] council indicating this could be punishable by a fine. ….
…. Transport network operations manager Tony Bonetti … … said residents filling in potholes themselves may be an offence and punishable by a fine. …

Not getting the road potholes fixed in a timely manner, nor giving compensation for damage, which should come out of their salary (bonuses?) when their service is not “fit for purpose” and causes major damage & costs.
Any other business would be sued, for taking money under false pretenses or not being timely in repairs.

Threatening people as if they are vigilantes with fines trying to mitigate those problem potholes.
There seems to be a pattern in this, threaten, arrest, fine or gaol anybody who steps up to mitigate the problem when the government agency is not up to doing the job.

It would seem that with that streak of authoritarianism that the roads will be closed for being a danger under “health & safety” regulations 🙁

The bartender asks, “What’s the matter”…?
Sam says, “I found out my brother is gay and marrying my best friend”…
The next week Sam comes in again and orders 12 shots of whiskey…
The bartenders asks, “What’s wrong this time”…?
Sam said, “I found out that my son is gay”…
The next week Sam comes in the bar again and orders 15 shots of whiskey…
Then the bartender asks, “Doesn’t anyone in your family like women”…?
Sam looks up with tears in his eyes and says,

    “Apparently my wife does”…

    • Viking, this says it all, from your post.

“Roy said the discussion was about “how we reconcile how New Zealand used to view things and how we view things as a society now”.

“Our history was written from a Euro-centric point of view,” said Special Operations Component Commander Colonel Duncan Roy.

So it is just rewriting history to suit the modern agenda. History means nothing to a “Component Commander” obviously because the article follows on with this.

“The NZSAS’ links to the Forest Rangers run almost the course of its 67-year history. Formed in 1955, it was renamed 1 Ranger Squadron NZSAS in 1963 as a nod to the colonial troop, until 1978 when the name changed again.

The gruelling NZSAS selection course includes Exercise von Tempsky, named for Gustavus Ferdinand von Tempsky, one of the commanders of the Forest Rangers. Candidates march for more than 20 hours in rough terrain wearing full packs and carrying 20-kilo jerry cans.”

And right there is why they want to change the name and history. It is because of the the use of the name “Gustavus Ferdinand von Tempsky” which the Early Settler has decided to take offence at and the now woke SAS would not want to upset them, now would they?

      12

      • “Our history was written from a Euro-centric point of view,”
because they were the only ones capable of writing, doh!

Not even cave paintings told any other version of the story so I guess we’ll just have to go with what we have.

    • Jeesh. That’s some serious grade historical revisionist shit Viking. I mean the forest rangers were put together because some Maori tribe was killing innocent people.
All that started because some chief slept with another chiefs wife, the aggrieved chief then sold the land that belonged to the other guy.

An invitation to participate in this appeared on my FB page recently.

Has anyone else received something similar and did you complete the questionnaire?

  10. With Auckland changing the speed limits on 170 existing roads around town, is it just an exercise to increase revenue by speeding tickets?
How many new signs to be erected on poles, existing road marking to be painted out and redone?
    It’s going to be a dog’s breakfast!
Will Waka Kartire have anything to do with it. Because they are sure to muck it up and will need to double their staff!

  11. ‘Bryce Edwards: Political Roundup: Te Pāti Māori and vested interests’

The article I’ve posted-below (Courtesy of The Daily Examiner NZ) will no doubt be of interest, and as it involves a certain John Tamihere, the information it presents will probably come as no surprise.

As always, it’s not WHAT you know, but WHO you know which matters, and ‘avarice’ is not just a whitey, colonial, construct….

BTW: Notice the mention of a certain Peter Davis in the sub-sourced NZ Herald article. Presumably this would be the same Peter Davis who was at one time (And ‘For political purposes only’) ‘married’ to a certain H Clark. That he should be quoted is interesting.

seems there are a few who didn’t like her.

Law Society president Jacque Lethbridge resigns after critical culture review report

Law Society president Jacque Lethbridge has resigned after a critical culture review found she behaved in a way which some employees experienced as “aggressive and irrational”.

The report, by former Solicitor-General Mike Heron KC, says Lethbridge was genuinely well motivated and did not intend to cause the consequences that occurred.

Lethbridge – who took a leave of absence from the role in August – issued a statement saying she acknowledged the findings and that her genuine motivation had been to make a difference in the role of president and achieve her goals.

“Those goals have been to champion the interests of the legal profession and to effect much needed change,” Lethbridge said.

“In the short time I was in the role of president, I did the very best I could in that particular environment to achieve those goals.

“I am reflecting on how my approach and communication style – which is without doubt direct and exacting – has been the experience of some in that environment.”

  16. A long read, but a good one about censorship / hate speech laws etc. from a UK point of view.

    https://www.ukcolumn.org/article/deafening-silences-propaganda-through-censorship-smearing-and-coercion

“As Lord Sumption points out regarding the proposed UK Online Harms Bill:

The real vice of the bill is that its provisions are not limited to material capable of being defined and identified. It creates a new category of speech which is legal but ‘harmful’. The range of material covered is almost infinite, the only limitation being that it must be liable to cause ‘harm’ to some people. Unfortunately, that is not much of a limitation. Harm is defined in the bill in circular language of stratospheric vagueness. It means any ‘physical or psychological harm’. As if that were not general enough, ‘harm’ also extends to anything that may increase the likelihood of someone acting in a way that is harmful to themselves, either because they have encountered it on the internet or because someone has told them about it. “
