The guys running this petition have done some really good background work on the Refinery, why it was closed down and who was involved.
I went a talk by one of the guys and learnt quite a bit. While what you mention in your first sentence nasska had something to do with it, the reality is Marsden Point was a very efficient refinery when compared to others world wide. The financial performance of refineries (world wide) appear to go through cycles. At the same time as MP was down a bit the Aussie refineries were also down, but they got some temporary Government support.
What played a significant part in MP being closed was Infatil was doing a deal with Ampol (Aussie) to sell its Z petrol station chain. Infratil are big investors in renewable energy assets, particularly overseas. Ampol said they would buy Z if MP was closed down.
Only a couple of years earlier the company owning MP was considering a $250-$350 million upgrade / expansion. Obviously there was a bit of internal fighting going on –the CEO left and the replacement CEO started the closure process.

It’s just another instance of employment & industrial activity lost to NZ because of low productivity, H&S overkill, the RMA & political meddling. My contention is that at no point in my prolonged & enjoyable life to date has there not been unrest fermented by states, political groups & educated wankers. All have had the same goal of transferring power from financiers (capitalism) through socialism to a world communist government.
Be the vehicle guerilla war, student protest or covid the intended outcome is obvious. What I doubt is that the UN or its collaborators are any closer to real success than they were fifty years ago.

Top defence contractors set to rake in record cash after orders soar
The world’s largest aerospace and defence companies are set to rake in record levels of cash over the next three years as they benefit from a surge in government orders for new weapons amid rising geopolitical tensions.
The leading 15 defence contractors are forecast to log free cash flow of $52b (NZ$83.7b) in 2026, according to analysis by Vertical Research Partners for the Financial Times — almost double their combined cash flow at the end of 2021.
Five top US defence contractors are forecast to generate cash flow of $26bn by the end of 2026, more than double the amount in 2021. The figures exclude Boeing, given its recent problems and heavy weighting towards civil aerospace.
In Europe, national champions BAE Systems, Rheinmetall and Sweden’s Saab, which have benefited from new contracts for ammunition and missiles, are expected to see combined cash flow jump by more than 40%.
The industry is benefiting from a sharp increase in military spending as governments increase their budgets in response to Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine and escalating tensions in the Middle East and Asia.
