Members of the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) will help to form the honour guard that guides the late Kīngi Tūheitia on his final journey at the banks of the Waikato River.
But NZDF staff have served in a less visible role at Tūrangawaewae Marae since the weekend.
From a small field by the river, 28 Army personnel have been supporting the marae’s catering services, cooking pāua, boil-up and fish to help feed the thousands of mourners welcomed onto the marae each day.
NZDF liaison officer Commander Tuijo Thompson has co-ordinated the Army’s services since Saturday.
“NZDF was requested through Te Puni Kōkiri by Tūrangawaewae Marae to be able to support. Specifically, we were asked to provide catering support.”
The NZDF responded by mobilising staff from Papakura, Linton, and Burnham military camps.

20m deal with iwi of ‘murky’ benefit to ratepayers

Watercare has quietly agreed to $20 million worth of payments, negotiated with iwi, which some ratepayers say secure only vague benefits for water services customers.
In December last year, Watercare, the Auckland Council-controlled water services provider, signed an “agreement relating to relationship matters” with Waikato-Tainui’s governing council, Te Whakakitenga o Waikato Inc.
The document commits Watercare to the payment of $1m per year for 20 years, to fund water-related research and environmental projects in the lower Waikato River and catchment, which is the rohe (territory) of Waikato-Tainui.
The agreement was released to the newsletter Trans Tasman last month, under the provisions of the Local Government Official Information and Meetings Act (LGOIMA).
The payment schedule was linked to Watercare’s recently won permission to increase its abstracting of water from the Waikato River – in January 2022, following a period of extreme drought, it won consent to draw up to 150 million litres a day for 20 years to provide drinking water to several Waikato towns and to Auckland.

However, the agreement was not disclosed to the public; and the payments it provides for are in addition to considerable environmental payments already agreed to by Watercare in 2022, as a condition of the consent (granted by an Environmental Protection Authority Board of Inquiry).
The consent stipulates that Watercare pay $2m per year for 20 years to the Waikato River Clean-Up Trust, controlled by the Waikato River Authority, which is co-governed by the iwi of the region and the Crown. The funding is for river clean-up and related projects.
“Waikato-Tainui liaison” is also a condition of the consent, including provision for a “Tangata Whenua Liaison Group”. The condition provides for the “reasonable costs” of two kaitiaki advisors (guardians) to monitor the Watercare water take and related infrastructure; beyond that, no financial obligation is set out.

This whole Foodstuffs / Woolworths rort, we are not being told the full story by the Grocery Commissioner. Bearing in mind, the Commissioner Pierre van Heerden, immediately before becoming Commissioner was a top dog at Sanitarium, he should know where the bodies lie but for some reason he is staying very quiet whether to protect his immediate past employer, Sanitarium or the Grocery Council for which he was a past Chairman of, I can only but guess. For example, the Supermarkets say they only make a misery 3-3.5% profit on their sales.
Well that is not the full story. The Commissioner should be advising what profit Foodstuffs make on their Distribution organisation which is treated as a wholy separate profit centre and the profit percentage at the Distribution Centres and Transport Centres are far in excess of the profits, compared to what is shown by the the Supermarkets. The thing is with organisations like Foodstuffs, in each part of the chain, the product is sold by Foodstuffs from the Foodstuffs Distribution Centre to the Foodstuffs Transport Centre to Foodstuffs Supermarket who then put another markup on and sell to the end user and suckers like you and me, who then pay through the nose for every mark up Foodstuffs an make along the way.
Just look at what a Farmer is paid for his stock when it is delivered on the hoof to the works. Foodstuffs then squeeze the Meat Works to process at the lowest cost, the carcass is then sold by Foodstuffs to it’s own carrying company who then sell it to Foodstuffs Meat Processing House who then break the carcass down, package it and sell it to Foodstuffs Distribution Centre and on it goes at each step Foodstuffs taking a cut. And you wonder why food is so expensive in New Zealand. The Grocery Commissioner should be exposing this rort, but he is strangely silent.

Te Kuini received her moko kauae in 2016 to support and acknowledge her father and describes it as her gift to him. Prior to her succession Te Kuini served in several governance roles as representative of the Kiingitanga, including the Te Kohanga Reo National Trust and the Waitangi National Trust.
Politicians have welcomed the new monarch.
Prime Minister Christopher Luxon said the new Ariki Nui, could bring “hope”.
In a statement, Luxon paid tribute to Kīngi Tūheitia.
“Kiingi Tuheitia was a humble leader who served his people with wisdom, mana and an unwavering commitment to Kotahitanga,” Luxon said.
“Over the last few days, thousands of people have gathered at Turangawaewae from all corners of our country to pay their respects – a testament to the profound impact Kiingi Tuheitia has had on so many lives.”

Luxon attended the tangi at Turangawaewae on Saturday, with other MPs and officials – including the Govenor General – also paying tribute at Turangawaewae throughout the week.

“We welcome the Upoko Ariki, Ngawai hono i te po, who carries forward the mantle of leadership left by her father. The path ahead is illuminated by the great legacy of Kiingi Tuheitia.”
Labour leader Chris Hipkins said Thursday would go down a historic moment in the nation’s history, “as the day the torch was passed on from one legendary unifier to another”.
“Kuīni Ngā Wai hono i te po Paki commands an incredible wealth of mātauranga Māori, a love for Toi Māori and is committed to looking after her people,” Hipkins said.
Teanau Tuiono, the chairperson of the party’s Māori and Pasifika caucus, said he hoped to work with the new Queen.
“As we have seen in recent days, with so many people coming together from across the motu to mark the passing of Kiingi Tuuheitia, kotahitanga is the beating heart of our country and provides a way forward as we confront the major challenges of our time,” he said.
“The Green Party looks forward to working with the Kiingitanga under the leadership of Te Arikinui Nga Wai Hono i te Po.”

The process of anointing the Māori monarch – Te Whakawahinga – is steeped in tikanga, a tradition which began with her tupuna, the first Māori King.
Tumuaki Hone Tāmihana will place a bible on her head, using the same bible that his direct ancestor Wiremu Tāmihana used to raise up the first Māori King Pōtatau Te Wherowhero in 1858.
Archbishop Don Tamihere will then say a karakia to bless the new monarch with sacred oils. Following the sacred ceremony, the funeral service for Tūheitia will begin followed by his burial at Taupiri Maunga.
The Kīngitanga Movement, which is one of New Zealand’s oldest political institutions, was started as a way to unite iwi across the country to prevent the alienation of Māori land.

I know that my house is still worth the same number of pub beers today as it was 20 years ago, so I don’t consider that I have made a real capital gain. A nominal one, perhaps, but not a real one. I’ll be damned if the State taxes me on my “nominal” capital gain.
No. I don’t feel wealthier. Maybe I am wealthier, but I don’t feel it.
The cheap red wines in the under-$10 category of a few years back are all +$13 at the local Pac n’ Sav. I limit myself to a bottle on Fridays to get me through the weekend. All in moderation.
