    • Why should food be cheap here? Its expensive as fuck to grow commercially and now all the new rules affecting produce growers larger then 5ha have just added huge expense and limited the land they can grow on.

Everyone thinks the new freshwater/environment rules are jusy for cows, theyre not, theyre for pretty much every bit of productive land that isnt growing trees.

Over regulation is one of the root causes of our higher food prices, you dont hear any political parties announcing less regulation/ laws they only ever compound the problems by adding laws to laws.

      • Dead right WG.
Rules and regulations and compliance are killing off producers.
As price takers so much cost is absorbed but it has reached the point where many are giving up.
We need big subsidies like rental owners!

      • However the costs of transport to the UK or other places surely is a reason it should be far more expensive over there than here??? I do not expect that prices should be cheap here, and understand the costs of farming any sort of food is prohibitive but from New Zealand transport costs surely should impact on the price of food over in the UK . To see the cheap prices in the UK for New Zealand grown produce does make one wonder WTF.

      • SB you are agreeing with me. It is the rules, taxes and regulations imposed on farmers by politicians. There is a coordinated global campaign against farmers by communist tyrant politicians and activists.

BUT- that does not explain why our produce becomes cheaper after shipping it to the other side of the world. I am tired of the lies and bullshit trying to explain that away.

  2. This is just wrong. If you had a small manufacturing business in Gisborne, gained a License to manufacture a component which hugely increased the value of your business, would the Council increase your Rates because that License added value to your business?

No doubt Council Officers will want in the future to go through the Financial Accounts of businesses to determine if the Company had increased in turnover and value, even though staff numbers and use of Local Body facilities had not increased, one iota, so that extra Rates could be charged.

    • The councillors and mayor add value to the community(jokes of course) raise their rates 20x to reflect their awsomeness and value added.

How are the rates for say a printing press like a supermarket or a bank calculated? Should just about be able to charge them any amount needed going by the kiwifruit licence logic.

      14

      • This stupidity from the Court of Appeal will have wide ranging effects throughout this country with Local Bodies now able to increase their Rate take by using the assumption that a License automatically increases the value of the Rated Land.

I bet if, in this case the export sales drops out of the Gold Kiwifruit market, the Gisborne City Council will not reduce their Rate Demand on those growers properties.

      • Well WO, rest assured the local Council in the Hawkes Bay will be rubbing their hands with glee, checking to see if you have a License for any of these varieties and will be coming for you. Tuesday of next week may be a good day not to collect your mail.

            • So the neighbour over the fence can grow say Granny’s and doesn’t get pinged the same.
So Change the system from a Licence to a right to occupy like the villages. or some such idea.
Anyway how is the license tied to the land. Never looked at one but surely there is not a prescribed bit of land but a license to grow. That surely would be held by the company or business buying it.
Seems a bit weird to me.
Next it will be Macdonalds, Starbucks, domino;s unichem and take it to an extreme even the lawn mowing man’s house.

      • WG – the California problem is solving itself as more leave for Florida and Texas with the homeless paying no taxes or buying goods, which is difficult as SF CBD shops have largely all closed, NY is following the same successful road, Chicago no longer has Walmart with other big box retailers closing stores. Interesting that two Multi level office blocks largely empty recently sold in SF for discounts of 70& 80% and 3 hotels have defaulted on loans. As local and federal tax take reduces and US debt bigger than GDP interesting times ahead!

    • The new taxes on kiwifruit, then creeping to apples? & what else?
Would not be amazed if turned onto the Maize fields of Pioneer No. ….. & other crops.
Any exemptions for the Maori Trust farms?

What about the share holders of Fonterra, Synlait, Open Country, that have contracts in various forms for pick-up & supply?
I recall that any flat land or rolling country was valued as a dairy farm, even if continuing in as a sheep farm because the neighbour had converted.
This is nutz as the risk is with the farmer, not the council, like the ones that went to ferret farming & other ideas, like angora goats, or whatever, that collapsed, or what ever the flavour of the month was.

At one part I recall dairy farms that converted to kiwifruit orchads were in part being bought back & converted to back to dairy. Just the tidal cycle of economics, and whatever is the flavour of the month that can get past government & local body regulations.

As wg picks up on the California electricity companies setting up another form of taxes on wealthier clientele, so that the “deserving” poorer ones can receive discounts on their accounts.

Not far off that ones bank card will have it figured, that say price of fuel will be higher for ones with the bigger income, a form of wealth tax.

      • Simpleton, not sure if you know this, but if the land is registered in the Maori land court, it can not be sold for failure to pay rates. Guess what sector has the biggest rates arrears? That’s if the arrears are just not written off.

        • Thanks Brian Marshall.
There is a lot of deviousness out there.

One has to be aware of that if they go to lease maori land.
To set up some clause in the agreement so as not be liable for the arrears in rates, Make it official so that the rates that you agree to pay are only for the time period of the lease.
It is so that the Council can not pass that debt to some repossessing agents, bailiffs. that then claim your possessions against such debt.

In the meantime the “share holders” of that land, can still vote in local body elections even though they have not meet their obligations.

  3. Yep, the UN will sort out the Weasels in the Greens and the Climate Change Minister. Should be all done by Sunday.

“Te Taumata described itself as a trade collective that worked with Māori businesses and advocates for the interests of Māori, and represented a broad range of Māori forestry groups.

Members were to meet the UN Human Rights Commission in Geneva on Saturday. They would also be taking part in next week’s session of the UN Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.”

Great how a disaffected small bunch of no bodies, speak without any Mandate but assume they do.

  5. A guy was walking along a beach in California when he stumbled on something. He bent down and picked it up and it was an Arabian lamp. He proceeded to wipe the sand off when a Genie appeared.
The Genie seemed to be angry and said “This is the third time that I’ve been disturbed this week, so you’re only going to get one wish instead of three, so you’d better make it a good one!”
The man thought for a minute and said, “I’ve always wanted to visit Hawaii, but I get sea sick, and I’m afraid of flying, so I wish that you would build me a bridge so that I can drive over.”
The Genie exclaims “You’ve got to be out of your mind! Think about the logistics, all of the steel that would have to be sunk in the ocean and all of the asphalt! That’s too hard, think of something else.”
The guy thinks again and says, “You know, I’ve been married and divorced three times and each time, they say its because I don’t understand them. So I wish to be able to understand women, know what they’re thinking when they’re quiet…”
The Genie says interrupts him saying “Stop right there! Did you want that bridge to be two lanes or four?”

    • To be fair AH the back room staffing is likely bloated. If they were to use the money saved to hire more frontline staff I suspect that would be beneficial. They could start by hiring back any of the mandated out staff that are prepared to go back.
Chances are they won’t and your first comment about the system being really fucked is more likely to be the outcome.

  6. This article is written in 1993, taking stock of earlier medical history of private vs, public health systems, & individual vs the Collective concepts.
Then looks a head to conjecture & consider the future.

…… medicine was implemented by a political-medical complex—on the basis of political health care—a scientific and social philosophy imposed by a totalitarian regime.
It should never happen again, but could it ever happen again? …..

……… In the end it is the preservation of freedom that will guide us to the best application of new health reforms and technologies in the future. ……….
    https://fee.org/articles/national-health-care-medicine-in-germany-1918-1945/

It would seem that many people place no value of even their own freedom, let alone other peoples freedom.
On that basis, they figure they are a part of the ‘God like elite’ by showing “virtue signals”, so any ‘problems’ would not happen to them.

  7. Resistance Kiwi from Telegram-

Not content with blowing an eye-watering amount of New Zealanders’ hard-earned dosh on an unused ten-year supply of Covid RAT tests, the clowns in charge have thrown nearly $19 m into Asian swamps “at risk of climate change”.

    https://stuff.co.nz/national/politics/132548011/nz-pledges-almost-19m-for-wetlands-at-risk-of-climate-change-in-asia

This Resistance Kiwi suspects that the cash is more about protecting habitat for the Mahutapotamus than climate change, but regardless, why is our country, which has been greatly impoverished by six years of Communist profligacy, giving money to Asia?

I’m sure that the homeless in Wellington – many of whom are Maori, will be thanking the Mahutapotamus for saving them from a warming climate as they spend the evening kipping on the footpath on a freezing evening.

The $19 m down the toilet isn’t the worst part, though. It’s a tiny dribble of the vast amount being pissed away by ClownCo Ltd; otherwise known as the New Zealand Labour Party.

“The funding comes from New Zealand’s 2021 $1.3 billion climate finance fund which included climate action in South and South East Asia as a priority, Mahuta said.”

So… there’s a cool $1.3 BILLION that the Fat Controller has borrowed to blow on improving the welfare of everyone but New Zealanders. That kind of money could go to training and retaining more health workers, for a start. Or improving the goat tracks jokingly designated as state highways.
New Zealanders’ money should be spent for the benefit of New Zealanders. Asian swamps don’t fall into that category. If ClownCo Ltd must persist with The Big Lie that we’re all going to drown because of climate change, they should at least spend our money on mitigation measures that benefit us.
It honestly beggars belief. But would Weasel Seymour or Nude Nut bin the fund? This Resistance Kiwi doubts it.

  9. Women can claim infanticide as a defense if they decide to murder kids in NZ”

“To satisfy an infanticide defence, it must be proved that mental disturbance was caused as a direct result of childbirth.

Under New Zealand law, infanticide operates both as a stand-alone offence and as a partial defence to murder or manslaughter.

If guilty of infanticide, and not of murder or manslaughter, a person is liable to imprisonment for a term not exceeding three years.

Both the insanity and infanticide arguments will be matters for the jury to decide.

    https://www.1news.co.nz/2023/07/14/the-other-type-of-special-treatment-for-maori-everyone-forgets/

When a hospital worker told Isobel Prasad she was only a teeny bit Māori, she was reminded of the other kind of ‘special treatment’ dished out to her people in the health system.

Being Māori and Fijian-Indian, I’m no stranger to racist and ignorant comments, but I felt myself shrink into my seat as she lectured me on my supposed “privilege”.

  13. The political left hate being told they don’t know how to run the New Zealand economy successfully. It’s an old trope, but they sometimes do their darnedest to prove it. The evidence for the prosecution this week has been damning.

Left-wing politicians seem to have no idea how the decisions that create wealth in this country are made.

They don’t understand what prompts people to take risks, to start businesses or to hire another person. They have no idea how important those risk-takers are for a country to succeed, and they have no concept of how the decisions politicians make can either encourage or discourage people to have a go.

They also don’t seem to realise that people have options. New Zealanders don’t live in a hermetically sealed fortress (except for a brief period of socialist Nirvana known as the Covid-19 response). They will make the choices that best provide for themselves and their families. And if that involves moving to Australia for a better life and better rewards, so be it.

We have a choice. We can either make it easier here and become more buzzy like Queensland, New South Wales or Western Australia, or shut up shop and become an overgrown Tasmania – pretty to look at but not much going on, and our kids living elsewhere. After six years of the current Government, we are trending more like Tasmania.

As has been reported, the PM’s mother is the Chief Researcher at the New Zealand Council for Education Research and has been involved in the controversial school curriculum refresh. The NZCER has a four year strategic plan from 2021-24 which has four priorities. The first of which is ‘decolonising education’. In the 2019 New Years Honours, it was reported in the Herald that a “Raumati South woman was “surprised and then delighted” to receive an honour. No mention that her son was Minister of Education and for the Public Service, and sat on the Appointment and Honours Committee that conferred the honour. It’s a small club. Friends and family only.

  20. Half a Million Worth of ‘Floating Gold’ Found in Dead Whale

Sperm whales consume substantial quantities of squid and cuttlefish, most of which cannot be fully digested and are subsequently expelled. However, a portion lingers and gradually combines within the whale’s intestinal tract, eventually solidifying into ambergris.

Ambergris is occasionally expelled from the whale’s body, which is why it is frequently discovered floating in the sea. However, in certain instances, like the one with the whale in La Palma, the ambergris grows to such a size that it causes the whale’s intestine to rupture, leading to the whale’s death.
