TVNZ is considering a range of options – including more job and content cuts and possibly big website changes by the end of the year – as it seeks to find $30 million in savings and revenue growth, according to an internal email from its chief executive to staff.
Chief executive Jodi O’Donnell, who has previously stated there are no “sacred cows” as TVNZ embarks on new cost-cutting moves to address a big drop in revenue and a vital new digital-first strategy, has outlined eight areas under review for possible change, including “content and websites that aren’t profitable”.
After the closure of Sunday and Fair Go earlier this year, it is understood that other shows, production and staff, including leaders, are among the cost lines under scrutiny.
“I know that going through strategic change is challenging and that the uncertainty about job security is unsettling,” O’Donnell told staff in the internal email obtained by the Herald.

All the “benefits” directed at home ownership were designed to increase the “new builds”. Nappy Valley, basic three bedroom Beasley or Keith Hay homes were the norm.
And there was nothing wrong with them. They allowed families to capitalise Family Benefits for a deposit, State Advances supplied most of the loan at 3% with a top up second mortgage from a second tier lender. This was the norm that allowed our breeders to escape the treadmill of renting. It gave a sense of community & security to those involved.
For various reasons we did it differently. We only bought because of a surprise Building Society ballot draw. State Advances didn’t loan to childless couples & we pulled off the purchase of an old cottage with the addition of a fucking expensive second mortgage.
Then Mrs Nasska’s amazing if erratic fertility kicked in & hard times were upon us.
Point is we qualified for bugger all except the Family Benefit which was, if my memory serves me still, about 75cents per week for each child. Then for a real kick in the guts my overtime & second job pushed my marginal tax to 66c in the dollar even with a M2 code.
No regrets but we did it the hard way.

What did the late-1960s have that we have since lost as a society?
– Immigration from the same ethnic group (UK and Commonwealth)
– High cost of luxury consumer goods
– Teaching of sewing, cooking, woodwork and metalwork at schools
– Far poorer medical services to the elderly in the last year of their lives
– Less red tape in subdivision and house-building
– Limited immigration
– Super-expensive air travel
– Hard for women to be financially independent from men
(Sounds terrible!)
Essentially what we have done is to monetarise housework. Instead of darning our socks our women take up employment to pay for someone to knit new ones. Rather than wash dishes at the sink we send women to work to pay off the new F & P dishwasher.
Our standard of living is static at best & essentials like housing get caught up in an orgy of inflation. It’s just a matter of doing things another way while we pay more tax, raise GDP for no good purpose & create new levels of economic churn.
LOL, we all know before we girls get a dishwasher there will be at very least a new larger screen tv and a newer car in the driveway. 😉

When one compares the price of a colour TV back in the 1970’s to today’s large screen TV as % of wage, the TV of today is unbelievably cheap.

The question that an employer should be asking is whether offering WFH and flexible time is better for staff and the company/organisation. Wider considerations like surrounding cafes should not come into it.
Back when I was a graduate accountant (2010 ish) Inland Revenue offered flexi-time where you could do your contracted hours with flexibility (early start and finish, or vice-versa). This was definitely something that helped attract and retain staff.
