When the last major eruption of Ruapehu happened in the mid 1990’s we were living in Rotorua.

The Kernadecs are the one to watch. Things are very active up that way and there under sea volcanoes all over the place. I know a few people who have fished up that way, fishing was great but they will never go back.

I would assume the mineral mining up that way would make the fishing look like small change. I doubt the east Polynesian early settlers ever went there, it’s way too active. Of course that won’t stop them trying to claim it, never has before. There were several attempts to put, I think a whaling station up there but it didn’t end well. There used to be pigs and orange trees put there by in case someone was shipwrecked but apparently DOC wiped them out. Try reading ” South Seas Vagabond ” by Jonny Wray, he spent time up there in the thirties and has some interesting stories about the place.

It’s a long way from nowhere and anywhere shallow enough to fish in is rife with volcanic vents which cause aeration. I know a bloke who was up there in an eighty foot twin screw launch who almost sank from aeration. He gave it full noise and just got out, he’s one of the won’t go back people.

I recently spent 19 nights in a Thai public hospital. I had been trying to rescue a cat and long story short I woke up in Chalong Hospital. I had fallen through a roof and landed 4.5 metres down onto a concrete floor below. Knocked myself out. Nasty head wound, broken collar bone, cracked rib and a torn something or rather in my shoulder. Lucky lucky man. A neighbour found me and called an ambulance. 2 days later I woke up bandaged in bed thinking wow must have been a wild night! Then reality set in.
I’m pretty well healed now but the collarbone is giving me a bit of grief and I’ve noticed my memory isn’t as sharp as before. But hey I survived and I am very very very grateful to the Thai hospital service who basically saved my life. 🙏🙏 (btw the cats nowhere to be seen!)

Having lived out there and in town for nearly 50 years and going backwards and forwards I have to say that most of what is written there is hysterical garbage lacking in fact.

The Tauranga people won’t be paying the tolls just as mostly we don’t now. Its the people who live outside of our city boundary that will pay the tolls and so they should. They get to use the TCC roading network (and many other TCC facilities) free of any charge. Much like Cambridge people can drive to Auckland and use their roads for free.
None of them add a cent to TCC rates and raoding account for the use of the cities road.
Its the Western Bay house sitters and logging trucks and visitors from the north that will pay.
Won’t bother me at all.
So a good sized toll with be justice and fairness served and a long time in coming.

What’s the latest for Stonewood Key after its 2022 high-profile launch? It’s been some time since we’ve heard much. Now a boss gives an update. Out at Manukau, the Du Val-managed, 14-level Lakewood Plaza is beset by problems. All in today’s Property Insider.
Lower house sale volumes combined with higher interest rates have spelt tougher times for the property development joint venture between former New Zealand Prime Minister Sir John Key, his son Max and brothers Michael and John Chow.
John Chow, a Stonewood director, said a quieter market meant Stonewood Key was finishing projects rather than starting new ones.
“With regards to Stonewood Key, due to the quiet residential market and high interest rate, our current focus is on finishing our existing projects, including a project at South Mt Roskill, as opposed to looking for new ones. Not much exciting happening as the property market is still a bit slow.”
Stonewood Key Capital sought money from qualifying or wholesale investors in schemes that Te Mana Tātai Hokohoko the Financial Markets Authority warned people should take professional advice on before entering.
Since last year, Stonewood Key’s website has been unavailable. Vicki Chow last year told the NBR that a new website was being designed and the original website would be down “for a few more weeks”.
Asked for an update this month on Stonewood Key, John Chow responded via a spokeswoman indicating the market for new homes had been slow.
“With regards to how many homes Stonewood Homes has built, national media has already reported on this in the past few days and the information is publicly available.”
Recent data from property researcher Pacifecon rated Stonewood Group eighth out of the 15 largest New Zealand house builders, based on dwelling numbers.
Separate data from BCI New Zealand for the year to July 2024 shows Stonewood Homes built 50 homes valued at $23 million. It was ranked 32nd for number of new dwellings completed in the year.
Chow told the Herald a central Auckland CBD apartment tower was Stonewood’s biggest project.
“Stonewood Group currently has a significant focus on the 280 Queen Street hotel development. Work has only just started and we are still working through consenting matters,” he said.
The main contractor for the building, which runs back to 33 Lorne St, is yet to be announced.
Chow has also branched out into the solar power sector lately.
“Exciting milestone for our first solar farm in Ashburton,” he wrote of a joint venture with Lightyears Solar last week.
“In just two months, the farm will be generating 7.2MW of clean, renewable energy, enough to power around 1500 homes during the day. What’s more, small animals will be sharing these solar paddocks, making it an even greener initiative,” Chow wrote.
Max Key was unavailable to comment. He said he was overseas, but is back this week.
