Two government water reform chief executives have taken redundancy payouts of $355,000 apiece, while a third has “transitioned” to another water reform job within the Department of Internal Affairs, now under review.

Crampton, hired on February 21, 2023 to run “Entity C”, covering the lower east coast of the North Island and the top of the South Island, took redundancy and left the job on December 15. Prior to last February, Crampton led council-owned Wellington Water on $455,000 per year.
Jon Lamonte and Colin Crampton both left their posts on December 15 with redundancy packages worth six months’ of their $710,000 “establishment chief executive” base salaries. They were each on the job for just 10 months.
Bizarrely, a third chief executive, Vaughan Payne, took up a new post, focused on the last iteration of the Labour-era reforms, on December 20, six days after the new Cabinet formally decided to legislate to repeal and replace that plan.
A department spokesman said Payne’s new job, regional establishment director, was agreed to in September, before the October 14 election, under the water reform law of the time.

They are from current and former NZDF personnel, both civilian and uniformed, and cover all three branches – Army, Navy and Air Force. State Highway 1 over the Brynderwyn Hills suffered major damage during the cyclone and still isn’t fully repaired.
The latest round of work will see the vital stretch closed from February 26 until March 27, only temporarily opening for six days from March 28 until April 2 for Easter. Detours will be available, but they’ll add time to the journey.
Apparently everyone is being forced to go through Mangawhai. Only local traffic is allowed to go through Gorge road to Maungaturoto even though that used to be highway 1 in the old days and is far quicker. Could be worse, we could be in Kaitaia and be forced to use highway 10. The Mangamukas have been closed for that long people have forgotten they exist.

A 19-month-old girl killed by her aunt’s partner was found to have suffered multiple injuries before her death.
Gisborne man Te Ngahuru McClutchie was found guilty of killing Casino Ataria Wharehinga, in the High Court at Gisborne on Wednesday.
A jury took two days to find McClutchie, 36, guilty of manslaughter, neglect and causing grievous bodily harm to Casino between December 2021 and January 2022.

I’ll go out on a limb here & suggest that the name may have some connection to Monte Cassino where many of the Maori Battalion fought & died during WW2.
It’s not unusual for Maori kids to be named after battles or ships. One old Maori lady, high up on the totem pole in the town I worked in was always referred to as “Akky’. Most thought it referred to the Ake Ake tree but she was named after the frigate HMNZS Achilles on which one of her uncles served in the Battle of the River Plate.

BP has admitted the 98 grade supply at its Ōtaki Connect petrol station was contaminated following a delivery on Tuesday, affecting drivers who filled up between 7am and 3pm.
