Great to see, I’m a keel boat racer so America cup racing doesn’t really interest me. The one I want to see more of is the G.P racing catamarans. Close, but no cigar.
As I was told by one of those involved,, when the matter of ‘Standardised’ Maori (Especially as part of the NZ School curriculum) was being discussed, a very-well (uni’) educated member of a small BOP iwi (No names) undertook a lot of research into the subject, to the extent of preparing “Submission Papers’ on the subject, and including all the relevant information about pronunciation, interpretation, implementation, costs, etc. etc. It was a very impressive and thorough document. Having a fair idea about what would happen next, they then bided their time.
Eventually submissions were called for, and naturally all the main tribes voiced their intentions to submit their applications, with the rider that, of course, THEIR variant of ‘Maori’ was the ONLY one which should be used.
Predictably, since there was ‘Mana’ at stake, none of the other tribes agreed and the matter dragged on, and on, and on, until eventually deadlines loomed, yet nothing had been resolved and no agreement reached.
Meanwhile the individual from the previously-mentioned (And very small) iwi had been quietly discussing the matter with various individuals, especially those in education, and these personages, after perusing the submitted proposals and costings etc. had agreed in principle that the IWI’s ‘Maori’ was the one that would be used, to the extent that the necessary implementation process then started.
The relevant deadline for the submission duly came, and went, and was extended again. Rinse and repeat, and yet the ‘Major’ tribes still would not agree.
Eventually (At least supposedly) ‘patience’ was exhausted and a ‘Decision’ made, with the result the relevant authorities declared that the IWI’s submission had been accepted, and that IT WAS ALREADY IN PLACE AND READY TO GO!!
Shock, horror!! How dare they etc. etc. from the ‘Main’ tribes but they were simply too late and despite a lot of at times very acrimonious words, nothing changed – the ‘little’ Iwi’s ‘Dialect’ was now New Zealand’s OFFICIAL version of the Maori Language!
There was (And is) a lot of ‘Loss of Face’ and prestige from all this, with the ‘Main’ Tribes being very, very, aggrieved, yet there is nothing that they could do – They had been sunk by their own over-weaning pride.
The individuals who were involved, together with their iwi, do, of course, think that it’s uproarious that they managed to ‘Put one over’ the ‘Big Boys’ and get away with it.
Of such things are ‘legends’ made.
The myth of a pan Maori nation has never made it past the gates of the universities. Even their elite don’t believe that unity exists but pretend otherwise to con dumb Maori & sickly white apologists.

The “dialects” may go further back than the migrations of 1300AD. There’s little to suggest that all the canoes set off from the same place. The languages of Tahiti & the Cook Islands are similar but different. There was little intermixing once they settled in NZ so there’s no wonder that there’s a difference between geographical areas.
If you go to the Cook Islands/Rarotonga website, it proudly says they started migrating to NZ in 500AD.
The Tahitians are the cannibals that came a few hundred years ago.
