Cabinet’s changes to make Three Strikes 2.0 tougher will lead to about 12,000 first strikers in the first 10 years, compared to about an estimated 8000 before the changes.
There will also be about 650 more second strikers and 88 more third strikers after 10 years, by which time the annual cost of the scheme could be as high as $25 million a year.
The Government says this is worth it to keep communities safe and put serious repeat offenders behind bars for longer, though there’s no evidence to show that it will reduce serious crime overall.
The Government has toughened Three Strikes 2.0 in response to feedback that the initial proposals were too soft.
How much tougher can now be revealed: the Ministry of Justice estimates that 4312 more first strikers, 649 more second strikers, and 88 more third strikers will be added in the regime’s first 10 years, compared to the estimates for the original proposals (7795 first strikers, 266 second strikers, and 11 third strikers).
In percentage terms, the number of first strikers would increase by 55%, second strikers by 244%, and third strikers by 800%.
This would add between 130 and 210 prisoners after 10 years, compared to the previous estimate of 40 to 100 people.

‘It’s a broken promise’: Research centre on white supremacy loses funding
The government has pulled funding from the country’s flagship research centre into white supremacy and violent extremism.
Set up as a response to the royal commission on the 2019 Christchurch mosque attacks, its short-lived existence is being called a “broken promise” and a threat to minorities.
He Whenua Taurikura research centre in Wellington received a letter from the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet (DPMC) on Friday, saying funding would end in December. It has been run under a trust since 2022.
“Members of the trust are disappointed with the sudden change in direction by government, done in the name of cost savings,” a trust spokesperson told RNZ.
“The $2m the government saves by cutting this research will almost certainly increase the risk of significant loss of innocent life in vulnerable communities at the hands of extremists.”

The most vulnerable are those that need assistance each day – children, old people, the disabled, not those that can, and should, stand on their own two feet. They should be responsible for all their own actions, and suffer the consequences when called to account.
If they won’t behave and wish to protest from the rooftops, ignore them. If they want publicity starve them of that as well as food and water. I believe a couple of weeks should see them weak enough to fall from the roof themselves.

It is alleged that a $50 million rate payers’ asset was sold to a private individual for $13 million behind closed doors and without going to public tender. This was the passing shot of the unelected commissioners from Tauranga City Council. To top it off, the commissioners committed a further $30 million of our rates to assist the private individual with the new super yacht business while displacing the established fishing industry which brings in approximately $100 million to the local economy and supports local families and 56 iwi.
