        Interestingly Japan offered help to Jewish refugees. Also of interest is the allies agreed not to hold anyone to account for the diabolical medical experiments, if they shared the findings.

        More people died in the Ukraine in a single year than the most inflated figure for jewish deaths in the war.

        Concentration camps are associated with Germany in WW2 but in fact were used by the British in South Africa in the Boer War period and by the Spanish in Cuba both at the end of the 1800s.

        The majority of these slaves went to the British, Spanish, and French colonies in the Caribbean.

Walking into the Auckland Museum and seeing the celebration of New Zealand’s role in that war when I grew up learning the history of how women and children were locked up and starved to death to lure the boers into a fight was thought provoking. History is told from many perspectives and what some nations pride themselves on, others deplore.

          Walk into the Vietnam War Museum in Ho Chi Min City and then watch an American movie about the war. There’s just … no way to describe how different those perspectives are.

    • He’s not wrong. We have an emotive relationship with the holocaust, because it is so close to those of us of Western European descent. But, think about some of the Eastern European / Asian numbers by comparison.

      Stalin killed (varies), but mostly agreed to be 20,000,000 people; 3 times as much as died in the Holocaust.
      Mao is estimated closer to 60,000,000 people. Nearly 10 times as much.
      Tojo, from Japan, killed nearly the same amount of Chinese civilians during the Japanese occupation. I believe he’s close to or just over the 5,000,000 mark.
      Some reckon Ghenhis Khan reduced the worlds’ population by 10%, or around 40,000,000 people at the time. The entirety of World War 2 was responsible for less than 5% of the world’s population!

      How many of those do we hear about regularly? Even though some of them happened at roughly the same time! How many of those are giving special status, where even questioning it or putting it into perspective against other crimes against humanity is seen as a “wrong” thing to do?

      Note what Jack Nohi has said. Not following the approved mantra means you are a “filthy vermin”. Holy fuckwittery. Socialism and Communism are responsible for FAR more deaths than the holocaust can ever be.

            • Mate, your logic doesn’t add up. The reference you listed says all slave trade was by Islam (wut) and accounts for 25,000,000 slave deaths. Then extrapolates that out to 120,000,000 killed by Islam in one foul swoop. You then come along and exclude most of what Christian Europeans have done.

              I am no fan of barbarous religions, but your comparisons feel very, very flawed. It doesn’t pass a sniff test for me.

            • There is a lot of dispute in this space. Arguments over motivation. For example, putting deaths in the slave trade (and over inflating the numbers) at the feet of Islam. But was their motivation religious or based on profit? Same argument for the estimated 20,000,000 killed by Conquistadors. They weren’t necessarily doing it as Christians but for gold. Would you lay deaths due to religious enforced poverty and supression of knowledge at the feet of Christianity?

              Dunno. The whole “religion killed more” argument seems a bit off. I can argue for individual warlords or wars, because that is a known scenario. Comparisons there feel reasonable.

              Not so (for me) on religions. They’re all fucking awful and the majority are violent.

  30. When it comes to firearms and the administration of the Arms Act it is becoming increasingly evident that the police are out of control and need to be put back in their box. Here is a petition asking for the administration of the Arms Act to be given to a civilian authority. This would seem to make perfect sense because it would then allow to police to concentrate their scarce resources on their core business which is dealing with criminals not harassing law abiding licenced firearms owners.

    • Missed that one WK. Fortunately Im in the south of Thailand, quake looks like it was up north near Chiang Mai/Chiang Rai. They have had seismic activity there in the past. My biggest concern would be getting hit by an earthquake in Bangkok. The amount of cono’s that have been built there these last 10 years has been phenomenal, some with suspect building practises.
