  1. Can anyone answer the question if kiwis can’t afford to feed and clothe their children at Xmas or buy them presents how after spending billions on getting our rail system up and going how are the poor going to pay to be passengers on it as the rich will have their EV’s and whatever fuels them to travel,as the old saying goes you can lead a horse to water but you can’t make it drink unless it has no cost. This is the same problem that the Coalition blamed the previous Government for that wages haven’t left those with money to stop poverty and with wage increases and welfare participants having large benifit increases hasn’t stopped charitable organizations having to organize the Xmas presents and food for those in need again this Xmas. So again why do we need such a lavish plan for rail when most won’t be able to ride on it unless it is free.

      • The thing that worries me stigie is the cost is going to blow out to nearly double of what the have project and Twyford was warned this was most likely going to happen. Why when you have a Minister that should have a first name of “fail” and Kiwibuild is a great example of that, why is our PM still giving him 100% backing.

        • Yeah Happychappy, it pisses me off no end when they are spending taxpayer money like a drunken sailor.
This is not a pragmatic government when they can go and shut down Taranaki with “no” cost benefit analysis done on that industry’
Lets hope they are gone in 2020 along with the corrupt Peters !~

  2. Its like all socialist governments, they promise everything free for everyone.
Like Corbyn promised free broadband for everyone!
But someone (the tax payer – the worker, the fat cat, the small business) has to pay for it.
    Nothing is free

  3. Given the eye watering cost to reactivate an investment that was allowed to run down as it was no longer useful, sold without recognising residual value, snapped up by a corporate operator who mined residual value, and then sold it back to the Crown at a high price, leaving the Crown under a different name to run it down further, and now this clown government wants to crank it all back up using borrowed money.

It was not meeting commercial needs, was allowed to decline, maintenance was neglected, value was lost to waste. It remains a loser. Rebuilding is supposed to win votes. That is the driving force above common sense for the current outfit. Naming them a government is way over generous.

    • ……”Rebuilding is supposed to win votes.”……

Here I tend to disagree. Rail is an ideological stake in the ground for Labour & the Greens. It represents things they hold dear such as inflexibility, public inconvenience & absolute social equality* yet I doubt that they’re sufficiently delusional to see it as a vote catcher.

*Naturally this holds true only for the plebs as the ruling class deserve the comfort of BMWs.

    • You start from the wrong premise. The railway was run down because it became a social employer with no management discipline (like a lot of Govt. departments.). Transport changed in many ways and is still changing.
Rail is a transport option but has two legs to it. Bulk rail and passenger.
If you removed rail today no one would go anywhere. No amount of money spent of roads would handle the logs for example without causing huge problems.
Tauranga being a good example. We would be logbound without rail. The Kaimai’s would be impassable, they are bad enough now. If you added all the containers on trucks going various places we would in fact have truck trains miles long.

The use of passenger rail in Auckland has leaped and one the loop is complete it will zoom. Sydney had around town loops 50 years or more ago and it worked then.

The pity is that the farmers and general god botherers who made up the National Party were just too dumb to manage rail as it should have. They are the ones who supported 40 mile limits, who supported poor work legislation, attempted to make their friends rich at the expense of the economy and citizens of NZ. Much like they did with having Import Licenses.

The only person that has ever made a difference to all that was Sir Roger Douglass.
and still they and their stablemates in Labour continue with the need to stifle and control.

    • Public Transport, Bus& Rail, is being set up for the masses, that is the ones coming & still to come to NZ.
Just look at Cronulla Beach in Australia.

…. Fighting broke out aboard the public bus in front of Chelsea station shortly after 10pm on Tuesday night. …..

….. Minutes earlier, the group of about 50 youths had gathered at the beachside station and were met by about 30 Victoria Police officers. ….

……. ‘They’re coming in from Springvale (about 10kms away) on the bus,’ the source said. ….

…. ‘A small group of those, about 20, took the train. Another 30 were out on the bus. A police officer was on there maintaining them to keep calm. …..

….The police officer deployed spray, as a result of that numerous people on the bus received secondary spray.
‘There wasn’t offending on the beach, that was unfortunate a fight broke out, but it doesn’t mean it was unsafe on the beaches.’
But residents told Daily Mail Australia the hordes have become increasingly violent over recent years.

      https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-7808063/Residents-prepare-HELL-heatwave-draws-thugs-picturesque-seaside-town.html

The police do not figure there is much of a problem, but do they live there?

  4. So who needs who?

The Chinese ambassador also claimed credit for Australia’s jobs boost.

‘Australian jobs depend on trade so if we take this theory, Chinese-Australian trade helped create some 640,000 jobs in this country,’ he said.

‘I want to emphasise the importance of pragmatic cooperation and exchange between the two countries and the benefits for both sides … as I said earlier I would like to see this continue.’

‘I think it is important … to look at each other’s development as an opportunity, rather than a threat.’
    https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-7809081/China-issues-chilling-warning-Australia-affairs-lose-650-000-jobs.html

    • Don’t worry
Our constant wage rises will soon make our exports far too dear, so that China will stop buying them.

      9

      0

      • You have it all wrong diggi. China doesn’t buy our manufactured goods, only commodities like milk powder, meat, kiwifruit etc. These are bought on the world stage at prices fixed by the buyers usually at auction. The only thing our higher wages will have an affect on is the internal costs to tourists. Put the prices up to high and tourists will go elsewhere

    • Pragmatic trading relations are important and do generate value to mutual advantage. The advantage does need to be mutual. It is reasonable for a country to advocate for the rights of their citizens and especially so where there appears a case of unreasonable detention.

General insistence on human rights in another country is reasonable and this is a duty we contribute to the UN to undertake across nations.

I am not sure about then interfering in the business of another country above the imperatives of the UN. We should expect the UN to do what we contribute for.

Going past that point and allowing social justice warriors to stridently demand to the point where trade and general inter country relationship is negatively affected negates the value of participating with the UN.

While I would not appreciate this country being told what to do by China, I can also understand the CCP does not wish us to interfere in what they see as their internal business. Common sense, not always a strong human trait, and diplomacy, needs to be applied.

      • “if you dine with the devil you better have a long spoon.” 🙂 as we all must live in this world.

I think just as important, is know your self, your principles, your culture,
Change with in, can still happen, as information, knowledge increases, and hopefully with wisdom.

        Then respect is often given.
So that pragmatism can work for a mutual advantage.

The vacillating fashions with tides of social virtue signalling will bring about one’s downfall.

The funny thing is that in the vote 3 Democrats abstained!

  6. Whilst I am not a fan of John Minto why have a NZ Electoral Commission Board if you cannot investigate political fraud in Local Body Elections.
    https://thedailyblog.co.nz/2019/12/20/request-for-inquiry-into-the-2019-and-2016-election-expenses-return-of-christchurch-city-mayor-lianne-dalziel/.
After sending a request over the expenses return of Christ Church Mayor Minto was informed it was not possible to launch such a investigation and to direct the request to Christ Church City Electoral Officer Jo Daly. Why have a Electoral Commission if you send it back to a City that turned a blind eye to the problem in the first place.

    • Obesity, the flagship journal of The Obesity Society

Toby1845 has helpfully proposed a new research study that the Obesity Society could take up:

“Talking of pies, I saw Megan Woods pounding her way down Lambton Quay yesterday with her morning tea. Having seen her make this pilgrimage tens of dozens of times, I’m wondering what impact she is having on the land that was thrown up in the 1855 ‘quake”.

Wellingtonians, who have to live with earthquake risk every day, deserve an answer!

You couldn’t make this shit up. Is there a Stupidity Society and if so, I wonder what their ‘flagship journal’ is called? Or maybe there is ‘Sloth, the flagship journal of the Laziness Society’….. and where could I get a copy of ‘Delusion, the flagship journal of the Idiocy Foundation’?

  8. I heard some breathless tart on the radio orgasming over the fact that the police would be going after those illigal guns now that the amnesty and buy back is over. Why don’t they start with the gangs? What will happen now is plod will be seen to be doing something and a number of examples will be made. This will futher cement the view that the police are the enemy (many already have this view over their atitude to speed) and I can’t see this ending well. Thanks Nash, Jacinda and co, you useless bunch of twats.

      It gets so tiresome.

      Arrest
Trial – with lawyers charging megabucks a day

Appeal – wth lawyers charging megabucks a day
      Conviction upheld
Second Appeal – with lawyers charging megabucks a day

Lundy’s lawyers, accustomed to their cash cow, will appeal against the injustice.

  10. It seems that with the rising of anti immigration parties in Germany, because of “problems”, it really means, not to Germany but to send the migrants to every other country. 🙁

The Green Party in Germany is urging that up to 140 million “climate refugees” should be allowed to migrate to the west and given citizenship.

Political leaders like Claudia Roth are claiming that island states in the Pacific could “completely disappear” and that entire population groups should be allowed to re-locate to the west as a result.

“Citizenship in the receiving country can be an option,” for people existentially threatened by global warming, said Roth ….

… Germany should “not function as Noah’s ark for the whole world,” remarked FDP general secretary Linda Teuteberg.

The proposal is not likely to sit well with German voters, many of whom have expressed their opposition to mass immigration by voting in large numbers for the right-wing AfD party.
    https://summit.news/2019/12/19/german-green-party-urges-allowing-140-million-climate-refugees-to-migrate-to-the-west/

So Germany seems to be expressing this as an invite to all migrants to settle in the West.
Sort of ratified by the NZ signing up to the UN Migration Pact.
Why not South America?, or Africa? near Kilimanjaro, or even Siberia, which will soon be a temperate place to be. 🙂
The next place of booming property prices. Right? Yeah right?

  11. Best to work out which flag to burn, if you do not want to be sentenced to jail, that is for 15 years.
A “Betsy” flag seems much more popular to burn, or the NZ flag as Valerie Morse pursued through to “the [NZ] Supreme Court has set aside the conviction,” the judges said”
    https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=10723958

    In Iowa 19 December 2019
… interview that he was “guilty as charged”.

“It was an honour to do that. It’s a blessing from the Lord,” he said, explaining that he did it because he “opposed homosexuality”.

“I burned down their pride, plain and simple,” he told …..

…. Story County Attorney Jessica Reynolds said ….
…. “The hard reality is there are people who target individuals and commit crimes against individuals because of their race, gender, sexual orientation,” she told the Ames Tribune.

“And when that happens it’s so important that as a society we stand up and people have severe consequences for those actions.”
    https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-50861259

Fortunately for some other religions have a lot of mentally assessed followers, that are into “pressure cookers” trucks & vans, with preparations for Chinese New Years. Often they feel very “entrapped” in their new Western countries. when bringing such great cultural diversity.
They are very kindly recognized and treated. Maybe they have used up all those mental resources.

So what represents “free speech”?; burn the USA or NZ flag.
What represents “hate speech”?; burn the “rainbow” flag.
In some Western Countries, probably by now, how many years jail for burning an ISIS flag?

When are these laws coming into NZ?
NZ already have a “Corbinista” Human Rights Commissioner, Paul Hunt, that probably is already pressuring & helping to craft such legislation.
All to be in harmony with Ardern’s adhan with the “Christchurch Call” and CoL partners. Winston Peters did sign us up to the UN migration Pact, that means that one can not criticize or point out features of a migrants culture.

  12. Just a heads up for those who haven’t yet caught up.

The Police are NOT there to protect the people and they are NOT your friends.

The Police used to be our friends when they investigated crime and arrested criminals…. but now they are merely targeting harmless road users and law abiding gun owners instead of the gangs, protecting high up drug dealers with political connections, impeding disaster rescue efforts and failing utterly to be bothered with burglaries etc.

Watch out New Zealand. We no longer have a Police force that we can rely on. Gradually they have morphed into being our enemy. How did this happen?

    16

    0

    • I have been saying that for years.
In fact the turn happened in the Mid 1990s.

      Lots of factors at play.
One was a culmination of the Notional pardy ‘misrepresentation’ that they would create approx 800 more police in the 1990 election campaign.
They turned traffic cops into police in 1992.
It was not REALLY a lie. You just had to read between the lines.

This was an awful merger (like the Notional forced merger in 2010 of the Auckland based cities into one dysfunctional Council)
The (ex) traffic cops were treated as inferior for years.
It placed the situation where the police came into conflict with people who ‘transgressed occasionally’
Previously this was ring fenced in a specialist operation – Traffic cops.

The traffic cops, despite getting a hard time, had discretion.
There was much more focus on road safety then – now it is a source of revenue.
Eg. they will target someone doing 108 km/hr on the National Park or Desert road when no harm is likely but a clown holding up 20 or more cars on the ‘open road’ at 70 km/hr is left alone. The emphasis is not on safety. Not for a long time.

In the 1980s I was pulled over 3 times for speeding. One time we agreed that 120 km/hr was an acceptable number – it was more. I got a fine. Fair cop.
The other two times I got a good telling off but no fine. It was what I would call a social contract. I let you off and you behave. It more or less worked. Get sensible or get fines.
Contrast 3 years ago when I had one beer after golf and was pulled up at a cop stop. There was alcohol on my breath. Further test. Under 50 mg so no actual issue. The cop still did a song and dance about …if I had been over the limit etc. It was a bully boy stance. He was a wanker. He is normal for a 21st century NZ cop.
Why harp on when I had not broken the law and there was proof of this. Dickheads! Know thine enemy.

Either give a fine if in the wrong or give a bollocking and no fine like the Traffic cops did in the past but when you do no wrong and get a bollocking the stupid pigs have lost it. No trust.

Not your friend. That does not matter. I don’t need them to be a friend. I need them to be a protector.
They are not even that. They now protect political people and minorities who want to rub up against our established culture and way of life. But if I say it is OK to be white….
      It is not getting better.
We saw their screw ups last week in clear light over White Is. and can now extrapolate back to how badly they screwed up Pike river. Nearly 10 years, not any better.
Lets bully the helicopter pilots who did good. That’s how bullies roll.

There were a bunch of events in the 1990s where the cops brought the heat upon themselves.
This is when the clear descent began.
-The very questionable handling of the 1998 Sounds double murder. This still leaves a bad taste to many today.
Even Conservative TVNZ did a documentary questioning the police in 2016 as doubt still lingers 2 decades later.
They even call it ‘Doubt’ .
Cops used a false ‘prison snitch’ there as they did with David Tamihere and others. Very common tactic by the cops as they are essentially lazy – a common characteristic of bullies.
      https://www.tvnz.co.nz/shows/doubt-the-scott-watson-case

-The poor handling of Christopher John Lewis. The situation of the Christopher John Lewis and Travis burns crimes re the two separate murders of Joanne McCarthy and Tania Furlan. 1996 and 1998
They even paid $30,000 to murderer Burns as informant. The cops will never come clean on their cock ups there.
…The police gave Burns a new identity and settled him into a safe house in Orewa.
Two years later Joanne McCarthy was murdered in her home in nearby Whangaparaoa, and police were forced to confront the nightmare scenario that they had placed their informant in the area where he had found his victim….
…He was on the witness protection programme. He was living in a safe house at Centreway Rd in Orewa and had been given a driver’s licence despite being a disqualified driver….

Plenty of info on the internet to look it up. They stuffed up and covered up and lied. Man oh man did they lie when they got it so wrong.

      – The needless pursuit of Peter Ellis of the Christchurch Creche.
The cops never back down when you are in their sights. (eg. AAT)
There is no compassion.>>> Only hate.
This will play out as they pursue people who were legitimate gun owners on 1 March 2019 but questionable today since the Notional wimps sold us out.
Still the gangs will be left alone because they will bark back.
Cops are soft and go after soft targets like Peter Ellis and intellectually damaged Teina Pora.

This makes the cops bullies. They are bullies to their own if there is perception of disloyalty but if they are outright thug scum like (finally) ex-cop Jeremy Buis the cops will protect these filth.
They lied to cover up his bullying in uniform and said he was not a sworn officer.
They lied last week about White Is.
They lie a hell of a lot.

This is not a recent phenomenon. It has been happening for most of the last three decades.
Most are slow to recognise it because their focus is elsewhere.

Most people on YSB are aware that Pres Trump is doing a lot of good but there average Joe out there in NZ or AU has been fed constant slop for four years that Orange Man bad.
They dont have the inclination to do the research to find out otherwise.
The same applies to climate change lies. A wall of false narrative and people passively accept.
They are more concerned with others things where ‘life happens’ >> Nana’s illness, Johnny being bullied at school; the credit card debt; the leaky home; car repairs; parent teacher meetings etc
They dont have time to do the homework ..until it affects them.

      Meantime….Propaganda works.

I’m going to have to ban discussion of President Trump and his appalling impeachment hearings during the Christmas visit of parents who are both in their late 80’s. They believe Trump is guilty of everything the Dems accuse him of. It will be too difficult to change their minds as their only political information has come from TVNZ and the Herald!! Hubby loves a good argument and is a huge Trump supporter. Changing their minds about President Trump would be like trying to change our cats mind about something she doesn’t want to do!

      • Howitis
Have you given any thought as to how moving Police to a business model around that time might be a reason for this decline in the public confidence of them.
District Commanders became “managers” who were appointed to positions on contracts. Those contracts gave them bonus payments for meeting targets set by the powers that be and the old time Superintendent became a university educated lackey.
With a bonus carrot in front of them, set targets that had to be met were passed down the line…hence things like ticket quotas.
Road policing by non designated traffic cops was the low hanging fruit that kept up their work stats without the need to do much thinking or paper work beyond ticking boxes on a preformed ticket.

I posted earlier in the week, that 5 top U.S government officials had resigned in one week.
One of them was a guy by the name of Steven Walker.
        https://www.airforcemag.com/walker-stepping-down-as-darpa-head/
He was known as the creator of the internet.
At Darpa he was instrumental in getting six bus size satellites to orbit the earth.” Project Snow White” was completed when the seventh satellite was recently sent skyward.
That seventh satellite contains the mother of AI quantum computers. There are 2, in fact.
Each satellite has a prefix code KH. This stands for keyhole. The MOL’s (manned orbiting laboratories) are now unmanned.
All the worlds communications are censored and recorded now.
        Fun fact:
Darpa, with funding from the CIA created something called “Lifelog” it was designed to intercept foreign intel and decipher threats from the enemy.
The CIA became more concerned with the threats from within, and ‘shutdown’ Lifelog. The same day a brand new social media app arrived on the scene. ‘Facebook’.
        Coincidence?

This is more lies from a a Government that had no intentions of ever committing to policies from the last Election as they though there was no hope of winning until Winston, Mr 7% who also lies every Election committed Utu on National to make a agreement with what most would say corrupt bunch of Labour MP’s with no morals.

      • Yes, they told me that I should contact Meredith Connell the law firm that handles prosecutions. I did and one question I asked if he was treated differently because he was Muslim. They firstly said they would not appeal the non sentence. They claimed they were not aware he a Muslim. The fact he was Muslim was in the sentencing notes. So that means they have decided not to appeal without reading the sentencing notes.

I wonder if the law society would look at a complaint against the lawyers at this law firm.

What a load of bollocks. Where we lived (40 minutes by car from Masterton) you’d be dead before the Fire Brigade got close. Not sure about the ambulance but the only time in thirty years our closest neighbours needed the police in a hurry they waited nearly an hour.

If you live in rural NZ emergency services are a chimera. We’re supposed to believe that they’re there but it’s only a sop to prevent justifiable panic. The only thing brightly adorned letter boxes accomplish is to advertise to the ever present & unpoliced thieves of the existence of valuables behind them!

Some streets are numbered backwards and many driveways have multiple houses.

Had the ambo’s looking for my neighbour’s house recently. Back section and our street is numbered backwards from what you would expect. Also the numbers each side are not in any relation to each other. i.e. 29 is not opposite 30 or 28.

Voting with “what the polls say” is not going to affect any meaningful change. It just means we’ll have two ever increasing flavours of socialism dragging us further into oblivion and we’ll have an increasingly polarised population as they vote red or blue and nothing else.

  26. As announced, Newsie has now permanently ceased it’s services as of Friday 20th December 2019.

Newsie has been an owner-funded operation since day one.

Coming up to three years old, while we still firmly believe Newsie has a place in the New Zealand media landscape, the cost in both time and money has become too burdensome for the owners to continue alongside other ventures.

With the current government looking to restructure public broadcasting, and seemingly supporting NZME buying a ‘ring-fenced’ Stuff, the time seems right to call it a day.

Should it happen, the combination of NZME and Stuff will ensure New Zealand’s national media will die a death by a thousand opinion-based articles./

Newsie has always tried to stick to balanced news, to inform readers of the facts of a situation, amid being largely ignored by government. Hopefully, one day someone else will take up the challenge to fight the good fight..

Online Petition TO MAKE ENGLISH OFFICIAL LANGUAGE OF NZ

Howick local Gayleen Mackereth has started a petition (online) to make English one of the three official languages of New Zealand.

Most people are probably under the impression that English is an official language of this county, however it was removed in 1987, when Te Reo Maori became an official language.

English has remained a de-facto official language since then. It is accepted as such within legalese.

NZ First MP Clayton McMillan (sic – should be Mitchell) was involved in a push to recognise English alongside Te Reo Maori and Sign Language. The bill is still under consideration.

Gayleen argues: “While 96 per cent of the people speak or understand English, and the school system and all major communication in this country is in English, it seems strange that English is not an official language together with Sign Language and Maori”

“English is a key to our economic survival and for many people, the thing which connects us to other people throughout the world and attracts students and tourists to our shores.”

“If English is not an official language, how can we ask new immigrants to reach a certain level in a language which is not an official language? How can we accept a court judgment written in English if the official language is Maori/Sign Language?”

“There has been grave concern for the loss of Maori language and over the last 30 years many steps have been taken to rejuvenate the language There is a huge push for school students and others to learn Maori nowadays.

This is echoed in official publications and on television. TVOne, in particular, begins and ends programmes in Maori and incorporates extra words in Maori during the broadcast. Many official publications now use Maori words as headings and use Maori in the main text un-translated,” Gayleen says.

“Regularly, these words are not italicised to distinguish them as belonging to another language, but left in standard text, unlike Japanese which uses a different alphabet for loanwords, or earlier publications by British authors where French words were often incorporated but in italics to distinguish them from English in the text.

“This makes it particularly difficult for us trying to teach new immigrants what is and what is not in English and doubles the difficulty in resettling.”

  29. It’s gone quiet. Presumably the nurse has been around with the meds but there may still be a cat lover awake: 🙂

    ‘Twas the night before Christmas
    And all through the house
    Not a creature was stirring,
    Not even a mouse.
‘Cuzz the cat had pounced on him
    And tore him apart –
    Ate his mouse intestines
    And chewed up his heart.
    Kitty thought he heard sleighbells,
Which made him take pause –
    He stopped daintily licking
    The blood from his claws.
    “Must be Santa,” thought Kitty
(That quite clever cat) ‘Cuz nobody else climbs down
    The chimney like that.
    Indeed it was ol’ Santa
    So jolly and fat
With a huge load of presents
    And all for the cat!
    “Wow, the best Christmas ever!”
    Kitty thought with a purr,
Then he coughed up a hairball
    And shed some more fur!

Those that do know, are probably licensed owners, and will not be dobbing anyone in. But, I wonder if it would be mischievous to randomly select addresses and dob people in…..
