Regional council chairman Doug Leeder said the cases raised issues across the local government sector in terms of how they deal with natural disasters.
“The sad reality is that there is only one group of people that will end up paying for that, and that is the community by way of ratepayers.”
On April 6, 2017, Edgecumbe was flooded because of the breach of a Rangitāiki River floodwall at College Rd.
In May 2023, the regional council was served with two legal claims in relation to the flood, just a month before the statute of limitations expired.
Shine Lawyers has since filed proceedings in the High Court in Rotorua on behalf of four Edgecumbe residents and one business, seeking damages of just under $4m plus costs and interest on the damages.
Insurance company IAG, which also issues insurance under the brands AMI, State, NZI, NAC and Lumley, is also suing the regional council and announced in April 2024 that it had been joined by insurers QBE, Vero, Tower and AA Insurance.

imo no amount of human intervention and engineering can prevent floods, eventually something will fail or a flood so bad itll overwhelm.
insurers should be pricing premiums accordingly, flood prone areas, fire risk, high quake risk etc should all be paying much much higher premiums to mitigate the risk.
council modeling shows all of this, they should be working with insurers and pointing out the high risk and the likelyhood of flood infrastructure failing leading to massive claims.
What about the councils own insurers? It might end up with them covering the council and not ratepayers.
Are you better to have a flood or two, that can drain away, or build a bloody great bank that traps the water for along time tru not draining away?

A University of Michigan study has concluded that it is impossible to mine enough copper to meet the push for EV transition. Not only can’t it meet the copper needed for the vehicles themselves, but the power grid would be lacking as well.
“A normal Honda Accord needs about 40 pounds of copper. The same battery electric Honda Accord needs almost 200 pounds of copper. Onshore wind turbines require about 10 tons of copper, and in offshore wind turbines, that amount can more than double,” said Adam Simon, U-M professor of earth and environmental studies.
“We show in the paper that the amount of copper needed is essentially impossible for mining companies to produce.”
The study found that between 2018 and 2050, the world will need to mine 115% more copper than has been mined in ALL of human history up until 2018 just to meet “business as usual” needs. This would meet the US’s current copper needs as well as supporting the developing world without considering the green energy transition. And that is simply impossible.
So as predicted by myself and others, “ain’t no way”. The push for the move from internal combustion engines to EV’s is not simply unrealistic given the stage of technology, but impossible based on actual material needs. And copper is only ONE material which is being shown to be lacking; there are others.
